This movie was one of the main reasons for me to go to university (apart from the novel "Doctor in the House" by Richard Gordon), and I still wait to wake up one morning having dreamt being pelted with gherkins by countless naked high-priestessess.
Sorry, don't accept that arguing. I still have to see any convincing evidence about the "*BSD is dead" claim. As far as I can say, OpenBSD is easy to install with a single floppy and no kernelconfiguration, stable and still manages to be utterly stable.
What this means is that it will be the end of the road for the smaller chipsmiths pretty soon, as R&D is obviously getting more expensive. More consolidation, less choice: same thing happened in Software ten years ago. Windows 3.1 anyone?
the reason for choosing slackware was it's alleged compability with older machine. The setup was easy enough, and the machine booted fine. It's just the recompilation of a uptodate Kernel with the necessary patches that I find difficult, which for a Newbie I think is legitimate.
Another reason for using slackware was to learn about the ins and out of Linux, which again Slackware is supposed to be good for.
You see, I gave this some thought, so don't always assume that everybody who has problems with this rather userunfriendly OS is an automatic dickhead.
"You can do that today in ObscureLinuxDistro 8.3. You just have to make sure you've got x, y, and z modules loaded, use modprobe for this otherwise type cat/proc/modules and you'll see a list of modules. Now go into the XFree86 config file and make sure you see these lines, and..."
I utterly agree. I am trying for the last three days to install Slakware on an old PII and for somebody who is used to Apple's Simplicity, It just sucks so much. It's interesting, without a doubt, but you know how frustrating it is if you're not able to just plug in your ADSL Model and go? No, it's patch this, patch that, find that obscure library and that driver which is still in Alpha and recompile the kernel.
In OS X I just whacked the blooming thing into the USB port and - hey presto.
Well, it depends a bit on you budget: from time to time a Cray XMP or YMP pops up (the last one was in ebay germany ca 4 months ago for 15000 $ (without shipping)) and you could not only have a nice and fast machine with a+ geekfactor, but also a nice couch for your livingroom and a nice conversation piece for the next cocktailparty/geekmeeting.
Or do what I did and get yourself a Apple IIFX(another ex-supercomputer, just a bit cheaper), put a Radius Rocket in it and try running Linux on it.
If you want it a bit easier, get yourself a IICX and run NetBSD on it (nice and easy).
In the "Mars" Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson he envisions a time when mankind will actually settle on Kuiper Belt Objects to mine them: Nice if you like low gravity. And now you can even see a moon rise:-)
I would go for a Ibook running YDL. You not only have the streetcred and geekiness of Linux, but you also have the pulling power and theadoration that comes with an Apple Computer.
Since OS X is taking off, the choices are getting better and better. There is now less and less reason to use IE: since I am running Opera Beta 4, I haven't used IE once. Icab and Omniweb are performing nicely as well, and now this Mozilla clone: The future's bright, the future is OS X!!!
this is the same corporation that sold/auctioned all its assets (down to the last coffee mug) including all its intellectual properties. Shame. Now they try to recuperate some of their lost assets by suing Microsoft. Great. I am always for suing those, um, gents.
question is: who is going to profit? If they are still listed on Nasdaq (which I doubt with their lack of assets), some shareholders will get a penny of their money back. What else will happen? Nil.

Sorry, Linux, 0 points for ease of use.
