It all depends on the degree you have wether you actually have a chance to get back into academia. They might not want you yet or only after getting a diferent degree.

I have been using an Ibook (500MHZ, 572MB Ram) since July 2001 and have been using it as my main machine since then (I don't have a fixed abode and need to travel light). I recently started to use it to ssh into my OpenBSD box and run XFree86 on it. Connected to my 10Gb Ibook which also serves as a backup for my crucial files I wouldn't like to be without it.

Slashdot is popular because it was one of the first. I am getting the feeling, however, that Slashdot is slwoly starting to lose its user base and that people are starting to persue alternatives.
