  1. I remember on The Teddy Borg is Alive! · · Score: 1

    Warning! Spoilage!

I remember watching Ghostbusters the movie, and at the end of the movie, there was one part where no one was supposed to think of a thing, because that one thing was the damnation of all of the world.

I, then known as Venkman (I still cannot spell my own name) could only think of one thing, a Cybertronic Teddy Bear the size of the Statue of Liberty... Controlled remotely by a cat 3 super fast ethernet connection. What finally demised that bear was the coaxial cable it was connected to, the person with the remote connection just couldn't keep the coax straight. I was the one who caused the coax to crumble, so to speak.

His offspring survived, and after life altering open-stuffing surgery, recieved a different set of commands, and this fast ethernet switch that was so advanced, only evil doctors and the students of MIT recieved it.

Now this bear hunts me. And it seems that slashdot is following it's exploits now. I wouldn't be surprised if by next week, it were me with the fast ethernet switch in my backside, and not this bear....

To remove AOL advertising (or at least what they let you) from the proprietary AOL client, do the following (Must be done to every user/screenname):

    1. Log in.

    2. Go to your settings, and then preferances.

    3. Click on the marketing option.

    4. Wait forever.

    5. Click on e-mail.

    6. Click the continue button after reading their plea to Not remove advertising.

    7. Click the no option.

    8. Click save.

    9. CLICK THE X ON THE TOP OF THAT BOX. Otherwise, the only other two options are continue and cancel. Continue takes you back to the yes/no option. Cancel takes away the setting, making your activity fruitless.

    10. Wash, rinse, repeat.

    11. Choose the pop-up. (Not sure if that is the real name) and do the same as before.

    12. Do the same for every e-mail account.

To truly remove the AOL advertising, AOL MUST be removed. Choose a local isp instead, which charges less, and will help you more. I went with one here and suggest anyone with aol should do the same.

They just made it a lot tougher to maintain mirrors in some respects, and at the same time made it an easier sell.

So hence, your bandwidth=pennies theory is disproven, and my karma will go down most likely, just because I wanted to point out the obvious.

For many years we have surfed the internet with ads. The fact that the obviously annoying one at the top is there proves that it can be eventually annoyed. Another website, www.opendiary.com went to a paid format such as slashdot is proposing, and it turned out that they had 16000 people subscribe the first week. Of course, the people who subscribed recieved no ads. It is everyones own opinion, but I would rather be bombarded with advertisements the size of Cowboy Neals resume than have to pay for something that was free at one point. Others do not, and are annoyed constantly by them. So this allows for another solution for those people. So why would anyone have a complaint after this is all resolved, except for cheapskates like myself who will not be paying, but get these larger banners.. (maybe the ones that move, I love em :)

The point is this. I am now the admin for a local isp. I don't make as much, but I am much happier. If you are looking around your back all the time, and what not, the best thing to do is to get out. There is always another job out there. I would just be wary as to who you tell your age, and what not. It's none of their business unless they can view your records, and you will know who those individuals are. Happiness is better than a good title in the tech world, at least in this position.

As to your boss. He is not your friend. He may be a good chum, but in the end, I would stick to the rule of keeping your friends close, and your enemies closer. He can still fire you after all. And don't think he won't.

Being that you would interact highly with Microsoft employees, how would you interact with them, and under what situations would you say that what is happening would be 'antitrust' and under what situations would you not say that?

My second part has to do with the two codenamed projects in the works right now, "longhorn" and "blackcomb" [I know that http://www.windowsxp.nu/ has some info, but not much as of yet, and I am unsure if it works in non-I.E. browsers] that are due out in the next 2 and 5 years. What kind of direction would you give to these projects yourself? Would you suggest any kind of addition of things such as opensource, different shells [In the microsoft sense, where the shell is what you interact with the os, just like gnome and kde], you get the picture on this. What kind of restrictions would you place as mandatory?

Oh, and what do you run at your home, and would you be changing to Microsoft products(if you don't run them already) in the case that you do get this position.

" Unlike its competitors, Sonicblue will not charge a monthly service fee. "

"The boxes will display digital photos and skip commercials automatically, which differs from the ability in current ReplayTV boxes to fast-forward through commercials"

The first statement, that they would not charge, would knock tivo down. The second would literally destroy the way that television content is paid for and profitable. Nuts, but true. Mozilla seems to really be coming along. As soon as it is streamlined more or less, it should run smoothly on most setups. Perhaps the most evident note on this suite though, is that it is still in the 0.*.* mode in developement. People are making decisions on it before it is fully developed, or before it hits the 1.0 mark.

If you tried it a while back, wait until about 1.5.*, I am sure it will all work perfectly then. This build is a lot better than previous versions though. I would defitely recommend it for the end user who has a p2 300 or above.
