I installed what I needed, so I am going to remove root. Yes, this will make me inVulnerable to all attacks at root!!!!
All jokes asside, if you are this paranoid, download the official rpm's off of cd's you buy from best buy or comp usa. Sure, they may be old, but there is no way that you can get hax0red doing this, now is there?:)
What is to be accomplished by combining four different versions of linux into one? This is meant to be interpreted by these points
1) How will you help those who have helped you in the past, say programmers who created mozilla or xfree86?
2) What file structure will be used? Caldera uses of course a different structure than the rest, so what is the decision on this baser property of linux?
3) What was the motivation for this project in the first place?
I rather believe to the opposite (sorry, I cannot spell today). If the government wants it, they will get it from microsoft, and you know it. Not to say they won't be civilized about it, but if they really want it, they will get.
Albeit, they should have done what you said, and bought the source with the original purchase.
What is the point here? I got koffice installed by default, and then I have star office somewhere, and then there is open office, and abiword, etc. There are plenty of office products, for free, that the government could use and not pay a dime for. I don't think I want to use my tax dollars for microsoft office, and I don't think anyone else does either.
If we have to though, because they don't want to spend millions of dollars on retraining a work force on how to use one version of office over another, I do believe that the government has the right to ask for the source code. HOw else would they know their vulnerabilities with e-mails like "I love you" and "Wanna see this horse go at it with a squirrel" causing billions of dollars in computer damage, not to hardware in general, but in software and peace of mind.
Source compile, download from redhat. Source compile, download from redhat?
Which do you think a newb or a system administrator forced to use linux will use?
Other than that, yes, I agree, I do not have the time, or the energy, to read every line of code and then figure out if it will b0rk my system. I put it on a test machine, if it does, then it goes in the/dev/null. If not, then it goes on production.
Unless you are either really nuts or really bored, this is probably the best way.
Good idea in any situation. This allows for the non-adept users to be halted. The adept ones will realize that you can check a box in most programs, or change the port, and it will go through.
Throttling traffic to a crawl:
A good initial idea, but this will lead to teachers complaining about the network being slow in general, and when you ask what they are doing when it is slow, they will "Not know". Think on this if you are going to do it. See the "blocking ports" section.
Informing teachers:
Remember when someone younger than you told you that you couldn't do something? Did you listen? Most likely not, and this may or may not be any different. It is probably a good idea to do it anyways, seeing how some will get onto others for doing it. Tell them that they are taking away from other needed resources, such as books for their department. Back this up though, show them documents. Teachers are normally good with realizing what is good to do and not good to do, if you show them as to why. Least mine were.
One other aspect you could try. Disallowing certain apps from even entering the network. Setup your dns to go to 127.0.0.1 for musiccity.com or kazaa.com. This is a pretty cheasy work-around, but most teachers will not know a way around it.
One last though, perhaps. Allow them to use it for a set amount of bandwidth. Once the bandwidth is eaten for the month, tell them all they have to wait till next month. This way they get what they want, and you get what you want.
Thank you, Microtel for having the balls to stand up!
Why in the world would anyone buy any machine made by a company? I bought a "packard bell" and that was my first and last computer buy. Since then, building them has become mere guesswork, and you say that Microtel has balls? They have the smarts enough to know an emerging market of people too cheap to buy a piece of software, or who went into a pool with fellow people to buy one copy of software and then to let it go around.
But why would you, and slashdot reader, buy one? Isn't knowing the difference between ide and eide required for reading slashdot. Just a thought.
I really don't see the point of this, for either side. Compaq was doing ok (although they were laying people off) and HP was doing ok (I don't remember, were they laying people off?) Then they go and do this, it's Sure! to lay people off.
So they are going to be the second largest computer manufacturer in the United States (my assumption, someone find out if you would so kindly), that still doesn't make it a very profitable deal. HP may gain some insite into 64 bit because of what Compaq has, and may gain a new base of operations in Houston, but HP was doing ok as a company themselves, serving low, medium and High end servers as well as desktops.
Good, my summer trip is settled. My fiance and I get married a day before the opening, then we rush on to Plano, Texas to see it. Then we rush to California to see it again. We stay in California for a few days, and then we rush to Ohio (forgive me if I am wrong, I really only paid attention to the ones close to me, or in interesting places)
Wonder if my fiance will go for this for a honey moon. Two trips, in one!
Well if you think about it, this would be great for a construction project. Set a flash to go off at a certain time, causes multiple millions of nano tubes to go off all at once. Those would allow for "TNT" (i am not sure what they use anymore) to go off, probably at a lesser cost than what is used now, the almightly plunger.
gnucleus.org, why go through all that trouble when there is this free, open source client that Music City INC. STOLE SOURCE FROM FOR A MONTH WITHOUT SOURCING OUT THE SOURCE LIKE THEY WERE LEGALLY BINDED TO DO SO. This is what morpheus preview edition is based on, oh, and guess what, no ads.
It does work on gnutella and not fast trak like morpheus used to and kazaa still does, but hey, for not having to worry about ads and not having to configure the program other than installing, and supporting open source, this works out pretty well.
You know, when I want to update something, I will. But when dns is critical to my situation, and hole number 8000043 comes up and needs to be patched, I need to test it first, before I ruin my bind and decide to blow all my customers out of the water.
I work at an ISP, we don't provide packages of any sort. We also don't require that you use a certain product to get support, and we try to support most packages, although it would be nice to concentrate on one said package, it's just not right.
The source code to Morpheus was made from gnucleus. I do not know the link to that, but it should be pretty easy.
The source code for morpheus is here. It is in a zip file, right from the site. I do not know how to program too well, but I do have a website, Xcompile.com in which I would gladly put anything made from the morpheus source onto my site, so long as this feature is removed, along with the advertisements.
Blackcomb was supposed to be nt 5.2, but they made it 6.0 so that longhorn can become 5.2. If you want your XP system to look like Blackcomb, right here, right now, do the following.
2 Choose one of the many styles from this site, themexp.org in which I did a simple recursive search for blackcomb. There is even one for "The Matrix" lovers.
3 Change your splash screen. These are also on the link above.
Bill Gates: I want no motherboard to work with any other software than windows!!!! Innovate!!!
Lackee: But sir, I use linux in a dual boot situation.
Bill Gates: I don't care!!! My company will rool joo!!!
Lackee: Yes sir. I will ensure that all manufacturers know this. You are king.
So after many years, after the advent of the linux kernel, we have this board, the first attempt by the monarchy that is Bill Gates to eliminate those who choose not to spend 299.99 plus tax on an operating system.
Next week, our experience with Steve Jobs.
(All instances of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs name don't actually refer to them. The time line of this story is slightly skewed. Anything else, you can comment on.)

This seems like a long amount of time for a update, especially with the multi-user environment update in mind. Who has actually used this os before?
So far, there have been comments on a few things:

Linux is an kernel
Linux is an operating system
Linux is a way to code software...
Which one would you tell the world if you sold windows?
Go with Mainland Internet. We do colocations, and as long as it's not pr0n and not illegal, we don't care what's on the server.
I am currently for hire. I work in security, and would be able to do business with your company. Problem solved.

Slashdot was never a right. It's more of a privelage of your isp's connection.

Do they like.. travel around with you, worshiping the ground you walk on, and fetch your beer while you hack the kernel?
