Once everybody and their dog joins the market because they dream of getting rich it is almost trivial to make money because the process is always the same. First you heat up their dreams and make money from the rise, then you start selling off and make money from going short once the panic sets in.
The scientific benefit is tiny in comparison to the money invested. I would support not only using that money for other things, but explicitly using it for non-human space exploration which is scientifically much more interesting and returns a lot more results and insights for the money. For most scientifically interesting tasks, humans are a very expensive liability. There is nearly no point of sending them into orbit and almost no point to sending them anywhere else in space.
So yes, throw it away or sell it to some billionaire who needs to compensate something.
What I love about X is the flexibility one gets, which is unparalleled by any other system: I can easily start a window of an application running on another host on my machine, works fine if I am logged into that other machine using ssh. I can tunnel a whole session through sse usinv VNC and use the remote desktop directly on my local one. It supports mutliple monitors spanning one desktop or several desktop on several monitors. Does Wayland support these things too?
Will prevent everyone to spot a naked female nipple, but just do an image search for "beheadings", "execution" or "crucifiction" and you well get graphic pictures of extreme torture. Yeah, the word "homosexual" is censored, but it is no problem to look at a picture showing Nazi soldiers executing people in a concentration camp. This is obscene and disgusting, not nipples or "bad words", motherfuckers.
I fail to see the fascination with that bunch of adolescent bullies and criminals that call themselves "Anonymous" in general or LulzSec in particular. They are assholes who think being a modern-times cyber lynch-mob makes them heroes. I hope the FBI gets them and they end up where they belong: in jail.
The "support" currently in Gnome3 is ridiculous: you can scale your fonts, but all the window decorations, panel icons etc remain tiny, no matter how you scale that. And you can scale windows by integer numbers which means you end up with window decorations being too tiny or too large because what you really would need is 1.45. On top of that, none of this happens automatically, your have to use the gnome-tweak-tool to fiddle with it.
I do not know if you have actually tried to use Gnome3 on a HiDPI laptop, it simply is a terrible experience. Granted, not all of it is due to Gnome3, since the underlying abstraction model is totally broken and individual apps, including Java apps, are still doing their thing based on physical pixels. It is breath-taking that such a basic aspect of interacting with an OS is still broken so badly in the year 2015 (and I hear it is nearly equally broken in Windows).
Cinnamon does a much better job about handling HiDPI right out of the box at the moment.
I have to admit I do not know how Wayland is going to address this issue, if it helps to solve the current situation I am all for it.
But that was not even my major point: what really annoys me about Gnome3 is the way how they without any apparent need took away ways of interaction, ways to configure and personalize, ways of how to get work done efficiently from their users and forced their one golden path to happiness on everyone. As if people would be using Linux because they love others to limit their options and make decisions about how to do their work for them!
Unity is an abomination several orders of magnitude worse than Gnome3. On the other hand Cinnamon is the only one among all of them that can handle HiDPI correctly, unfortunately it frequently locks up and has a ton of other problems. Hipster designers and self-declared usability experts are everywhere and they have ruined many a good project.
but the problem is that for some reason the only real effort and money goes into shit projects like Gnome3 or Unity. Tiny projects like Cinnamon or Mate do a much better job but necessarily have more problems because only a fraction of work goes into them. For example, Cinnamon is currently the only desktop manager that can really deal with HiDPI on Linux. Everything else is still an abomination.
KDE is OK, but unfortunately its HiDPI support sucks as much as, if not more than, Gnome3's. And with Laptop workstation screens having DPIs in the 200s and much above, we are talking a quite sever amount of suckiness.
Gnome 3 has made the user-experience a disaster. But even worse, it took away or made it much harder for a user to fix that disaster, even when willing to invest time to fix it. Because, you know, the Gnome3 developers just know so much than all their users what the users want and need. So they decided that it is really not good for us to have task bar any more, or to have shortcut icons on the desktop or have shortcut icons in the panel, or have the panels organized like we want, because doing it all like they figured out some noobs want to do it is obviously the only road to happiness for us all. And they were so busy taking away the freedom of their users they could just not be arsed to work on important stuff like e.g. proper support of HiDPI monitors or multitple monitor configurations with big differences in DPI.
The same applies, probably even more, to the Unity team, btw.
This is not my field of expertise, so I do not know the literature. But I know that I read more or less an identical assessment in a scientific report that was created for the Australian legislators in the 1980'ies upon which i stumbled by chance. I read similar assessments in a number of books on recreational drugs later, so this cannot be new at all and must already be backed by dozens, if not hundreds of studies? Could we not finally start to just accept these insights as facts?
What a pathetic rage quit post of some little attention whore who admits having no intention to discuss anything of it any further, to allow disagreement or any other follow-up. Too late to ignore him, but that is what should have happened in the first place.
The ones now complaining about how risky it is to rely on open-source software are exactly thos thousands of companies who just use open-source and never give anything back, usually not even provide a patch ever. It is not the fault of open-source it is the fault of greedy assholes who just take, never give back and then complain and bash.
Some probably adolescent script kiddies with an ego by far exceeding their intelligence try to play digital lynch mob. What pathetic little cunts. Not for the first time showing how much worse than individual stupidity their collective stupditiy can be.
i find it interesting what you write here because this (the pressure from other women, behavior from other males) is not what I have experienced in the european countries where I have been at all. The problem there mostly is that women (statistically) just are not interested in the topic, just as they are not interested in e.g. electrotechnics. Now we could argue endlessly why that would be: is it in the genes? is it the upbringing? is it how these fields are portrayed in culture? I don't know, but the fact of the matter is that women, on average, just simply do not want this kind of job. And when I talk to some of them now, after I had this job, as a male, for a couple of decades, I think they might have a point.
So lets have some discrimination of boys to fix it!
Makes perfect sense.

that would be true and I would fully agree if you would write the year before the month. I would immediately change my mind about this if everyone would write dates year, then month, then day, or just month, then day or just day.

it matters in all contexts where it is not clear from the outset if the date was written following the dumb US convention or how nearly everyone else on this world does it. Although, personally I would actually even prefer the MM-DD convention when it would only be used with the ISO way to write dates: YYYY-MM-DD which should really be the only way how anyone writes down dates.

Hire good lawyers instead of good developers.

For example, how do you use remote windows or something like VNC on either of those right out of the box?
