I don't think MS got the news about free VMWARE from Slashdot or any other news site for that matter. They must have their own information sources and insiders in such companies. So, setting VirtualPC free just day after VMWare may be just what they have planned ahead.

I think parent found it odd that he uses the phrase "my guys" as opposed to "we". It does sound somewhat unnatural: the person works 18 years for the company and still does not identify himself as a part of it.

  11. Re:Bad programmers are still bad programmers! on Why the Light Has Gone Out on LAMP · · Score: 5, Insightful
At the end of the day bad programmers will write bad code, it's just easy to learn languages (such as Basic and PHP) means they can write more bad code a lot quicker with (arguably) more negative impact when it folds in on it'self.
The real problem is that those easy-to-learn-but-crappy languages got expanded. If they were still small and allowed bad programmers (read: non-programmer) to write some simple apps, I wouldn't mind and I would've hailed their developers. But now these languages are getting bigger and bigger, causing bigger and bigger problems.

...confuse the concept of "intelligence" with "knowledge about computers"
    Agree. Totally.

As a programmer, I think that *all* programmers have to spend some time supporting customers on some stuff. Or at least read articles like this or talk to tech support from time to time. Not for the amusement ("hey, they are stupid") part, but in order to better understand how usual people see computers, in order to be able to adopt software to their views/habits.

This mostly applies to UI designers/developoers, but every software component has its human users, and knowing these users is a key point in creating a successful application.

Why not just use the permanent, removable storage for such vital information? Or better yet, have the option to copy it to both places (but only display it once, which it can't currently do)?
Hmmm, I know nothing about nokia 6600, but my old-as-time nokia 7110 can do that just fine, I can select memory to use: SIM card or phone and easily sync both.
