The desktop market is darn near saturated anyway. If someone hasn't bought a home or small business computer yet, the odds seem pretty low that they will. If they already have a computer, odds of buying another one are getting similarly low. And for better or worse, most of the already sold systems are Wintel systems.
Up where you and I live this maybe true. The ones that are going to buy new stuff in our regions will undoubtly follow the masses and go for wintel. There is however a big but to this one:
There are a lot of countries where computer use is not so widespread as with us. Just that easy. Markets M$ still has to fight for to win. Markets that could be won by Linux. There live more people in these markets than there are computers right now, so go figure.
It seems like a funny combination. What was it again that Ximian offered: an installation tool, a mail client and a Gnome desktop. Isn't Suse not a totally KDE focussed system with a very fine admin/installation tool?
I love Suse for the distro it is, I hope Novell will not mix it too much with the Ximian stuff. I can understand they see Suse as a good server system, and they want Ximian for the desktop. That really would be a shame, since Suse features one of the nicest KDE implementations.
"We've gone from little over 40 hours on average to 24 hours. With Linux, that would be a couple of weeks on average."
Is really simple. After the patch is written Microsoft only needs 24 hours to have the patch available on windows updates. Linux distributions normally take longer, in his opinion, to update their distribution. Now the problem is that he might be right here (although I credit security.debian.org awesome work there). So what you see here is the typical M$ marketing answer which probably will work at the management level. The fact that you could download and manually install the Linux patch yourself, will not be told by M$.
Outperforms all the others, might be a bit over the top. If you look at the numbers, it really doesn't outperform any of the others. It is a good one, in the top ranges, but considering the fact that the outperforming fields are green and not red...
You call that job security. Let me think about that one. Patching a windows system and keeping av-software up to date is work that really doesn't need a high educated kind of person. It doesn't even need to be someone who is on site. Windows is made for, er, 'stupid people' remember. Since you probably live in some kind of western country and you very probably get more money every year, you will be (or even are) far too expensive. For the company it would be cheaper to replace you with either a young untrained 'patchworker' or transfer the patch department to a low income country.
But you're right, the job is secure, after the transfer, the job is still there, the question is if you still get paid for it.
for Asian languages as well. And since most of the new things concerned to mobility come from Asia, I guess the designers have some extra work to do here.
Drink a lot of water (at least 2,5 litres a day). Depending on your location: stay away from tap. Too much chloric is just not good for you. There is hardly a way to intoxic your kidneys with too much water. You will have more problems with not enough water. No snacks. No sodas. Not one. That simple. Do regular meals, three times a day. Eat slowly. Chew your food. Mabe take an apple or so for in between. Fruits are good. Start moving. Go jogging, or aerobics. Do it three times a week (more is good as well). When jogging you should be able to get to 45 minutes each time in about three months. Cook your own food. Restaurants (except the very expensive ones) tend to cook with too much fat. Stay low on fat, stay low on meat. Really you don't need meat. It just tastes good:-) Forget about beer. It is bad for your sexlife as well. Alcohol and bubbles reduce the ability to get you willy dancing. Go for wine, if you need the alcohol. Combines better with real food as well. Look in the mirror. Do it a lot. Helps to motivate, especially when things are coming down.
Respect and love yourself. If you really love your body you won't let it get out of shape.

Kate is broken, juk won't work (not on all my files at least) plus it is cvs, which means... uhhh... some things will be not working the way you hope (did I mention kmail can screw your imap folders?)
Nothing against it, I'm using it on one of my machines as well, but that is not the one I'm using for 'real work'.
Oh and downgrading to a real unstable environement (just debian unstable) made me reinstall my machine...
Fear is kinda funny: the saver you get your live organized the more scared you get. Right now the US has come to the point where the government fears its civilians, and the whole nation fears the world. And so it behaves like a big kid, slamming the faces of the not so fortunate. Kinda really makes me sad.
Iraq's imports of food and medicine are not now and have never been affected by any of the various sanctions regimes imposed by the UN or the US. You might want to update your knowledge here

Brings up the question whether deathrow can be considered ethical for any modern nation. If you respect life, you just don't kill people. Animals kill, people shouldn't.
Dunno, dunno, haven't you guys learnt anything from Microsoft. They used some statements like: 30 new features in office are because of one person. They invented the talking paperclip, turning that one off was pretty hard. They got rid of it.
One of the few things I found in three years of user support is that they want: features (and they all want different features) and customizability. Why do you think skins are so popular. Everyone wants every program to look the way he/she likes. Means: options, options and more options.
And yes you will be surprised to see what options users find. Even the dumbest ones. So yeah Gnome is becoming the adminsitrators dream by removing the advanced button everywhere: if a user can't change it he cannot screw the system. KDE takes the other approach and gives all the features. I like it, I'll stick to it.
And it is having the first version of a kiosk option (like windows profiles). To be honest: I don't care what runs my car, as long as it takes me where I want to go. KDE is the better motor for me. I don't like SUN commitees deciding what I can configure and what not. I chose Linux, remember?
I don't know whether it was in the article at all, but I thought that it has been known for a long time that VHS won the battle because you could rent a lot of adult movies for it. Seems the same explanation that makes up for the succes of the polaroid camera.
Everything that needs Java.
If you click on the next page link, it says:

That's even 2 mil. more than google finds for me.

and we have enough in-house talent to not need Red Hat support
Bold statement: go for debian. I mean if you don't need support, why bother paying for Red Hat?
Judaism is a religion and a culture, NOT a race
Just for the record: biological speaking there is only one human race. We can all produce kids that can produce kids, so we're all in the same boat.
This means there can be no racism. Stupidty is another story, there is a lot of stupidity in this world.

Burning Karma, I got a first post!

Linux is taking over the world anyway, I personally wouldn't mind if we were left with at least choice, when it comes to desktops.
The world is big enough for the two to hang around.
I don't know whether it was in the article at all, but I thought that it has been known for a long time that VHS won the battle because you could rent a lot of adult movies for it. Seems the same explanation that makes up for the succes of the polaroid camera.
Will be hard for them though... soon there will be no-one left in the market to abuse.
