  1. Re:Here's an interesting twist..... on AMD Takes Microsoft's Side in Antitrust Case · · Score: 0

Would game developers pump millions into development of a game for something like... 25% market share?

You actually bring up a very important point. However lets look at the console world. At any given time(through history) you have three consoles. History shows that 2 out of 3 consoles remain successful, but the last one just bites dust.

When SNES, Sega Genesis, and Turbo Grafix16 were battling, TG-16 lost.

When N64, PSX, and Sega 32-X[early death] /Dreamcast. Sega lost.

Now PS2, Xbox, and GC are fighting...we'll see who loses. Right now PS2 and Xbox are fighting for the same market share, Nintendo is kicking-back and enjoying nice profit from the 'kidde-market'(and its gameboy).

To answer your question, Game devs, develop games for the console that has the most installed base. If they want more money, they may port their games to other systems, but that doesn't usually happen(you gotta have exclusives).

What happens is that you get different devs developing awesome games for ONE platform AND other devs developing for ANOTHER platform.

This is why you see the Xbox crowd waiting to hear, "Metal Gear coming to Xbox" or "FF coming to Xbox". I'm sorry its NOT going to happen any time soon. Which is why you have other devs like Bungie developing for xbox, making cool games that sell(Halo).

Point of this discussion? Two or more big OS companies can certainly survive. We don't need M$. And the development companies thrive.

We are now in the high times for Linux. I mean, I consider Linux and Windows to be at the crossroads for the best OS.

    For Linux we have:

Mozilla 1.0/Konqueror(even more better with crossweaver's plugins!)
    OpenOffice
    Apache 2.0
    Samba
    etc.

A lot of these and other types of softwares are "professional quality"...and it suprises me that people actually do this for free.

The point? We have just met up with Windows. Open source software can *only* improve from this point on, while Windows just stagnates(with UI updates every 5 years).

I don't agree. While each and everyone does value their own hardwork, I personally don't think we have to use lofty and expensive tools such as MS Office to get our work done.

I mean, seriously, how many Joe-6-packs use all the features included in Office? Like that annoying little paper clip that constantly nags you? Or all those auto-checkers, auto-formatters, etc. that you never use?

What people need is a functional tool. It lets them do their work. You can use StarOffice, Word Perfect, or even KOffice to get your job done. For example, I prefer StarOffice 5.2 to Office97 because it has a good set of functions to design effective flowchart-like diagrams.

Microsoft's "office model" doesn't work for everyone, you really need to do serious usability tests to know what your core audience needs. More features != better functionality != more productivity.

Spending $480 on a suite, where you use only a fraction of so-called "features" doesn't justify cost. Microsoft COULD release a version of Office with less and more down-to-earth features that people actually use. But they won't do that. Because they know the regular joe has no choice but to get their Office suite.

I'm suprised that Google(which had a good startup capital--still running off it[as I've heard]) loads fast, doesn't have garbage creeping every week, and has features that YOU *WANT* to actually use!!

Read what Mr. Sweeney(Unreal.com) has said in past interviews about Java. Java code is just not the type of application you can write games with. I mean, games push billions of bits across your bus and having such a high overhead like java, means you have to settle for games like "Yahoo Pool!". From my experience, using Java for UIs are horrible(u get inconsistent response times from simple things like menus). Now try imagining that for games.

While I have to agree that Java has some advantages (in my case it eases remote administration of custom developed hardware/software). But please don't advocate Java is the Holy Grail of computing.

I've seen the same bullshit for C++ on some forums, where ppl just spurt out, "Use C++". I've seen comments where one guy just glanced at the Quake2 source code overnite and complained it lacked any "software engineering" techniques or C++.
