On the other hand, playing Devil's Advocate here...is it okay for students to try to break into people's houses, peruse through the private information of the homeowners and then publish their results?
Breaking into a dwelling, even if you don't steal anything, is covered by "Breaking and Entering" laws. The notion of data and network security is the same.
I hate to think that the M$ codec has the potential to become industry standard. All of the M$ WMV codecs are absolute CPU pigs. I had to upgrade from an AMD 500mhz CPU to a 1.3ghz CPU because the 500mhz CPU could not handle M$'s WMV v9 codec.
The 500mhz CPU handled Real, XVid and DIVX and most of the other codecs, including Apple's Quicktime, without a hiccup. But the M$ WMV codecs are absolute pigs.
In other news, Microsoft has announced that they have patented all asswiping techniques. The public will no longer be allowed to wipe their asses without accepting the EULA from Microsoft. Violators caught wiping their asses without a valid patent license from Microsoft will be prosecuted using provisions of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

Don't worry -- there's about 75 users of BSD in the entire universe, I'm sure one of them has a solution.
Hint: the person who put the sound card in a cluster is probably a moron who plays Quake or some other FPS game when no one is monitoring their activities.
I like Win98SE. Win2K is pretty good. XP sucks donkey balls. I like RH7.3. RH8 and RH9 have a number of nagging problems. Fedora, for all intensive purposes, is Beta software at best, Alpha software at worst.
That being said, nobody in their right mind is going to dual boot Win2K and Fedora on a production machine.
Try skipping around in a video. WMV will hang 6/10 times -- especially on videos that use lower bitrates.
You can skip around in MPG just fine. AVI's (i.e. DivX encoded for example), as long as you've got reasonable keyframes, you can skip around a movie/video all you want and it works great.
LISP? *snicker* *snicker* *snicker* As long as it's not Smalltalk. *snicker* *snort* *snicker*
After working with Java for 4 years, I realized that C (and to a lesser extent C++) resulted in faster development and better project completion rates.
Very true. The muscle car dudes are thought of as masculine and manly, and are the ultimate chick magnets. They score with all the hot chicks and eventually become ultra-successful business executives.
The overclocking dudes are thought of as girly Poindexters, who if they are lucky, will have a cubicle larger than a bread box and might even move out of their mommy's basement before they turn 45 -- about the same time they lose their virginity.
BSD is dying...Try getting BSD to run on a quad processor system using 2+ ghz processors.

Does anyone know at which point multithreaded Apache (2.0) is better than multiprocess Apache(1.3)? I'm still using 1.3.x with PHP 4.3.x
I use me@home.net or spam@me.net
When I search for PostgreSQL and MySQL jobs on monster.com, hotjobs and careerbuilder, there are very few positions listed.
However, search for MSSQL or Oracle jobs, that's a whole different story.
I hear alot of open source advocates spouting off about PostgreSQL and MySQL but I don't see alot of movement in the job market.
But will it have 64 kilobytes of RAM?

Worry not! Be Happy!!!

So what M$ is really doing is releasing it on Source Forge in the hopes of getting free labor to improve their product.
Bill Gates & Company reap the financial rewards without having to commit to the R&D costs.
If anything good or innovative comes out of this, it (the free labor from the Open Source community) gets rolled into M$'s commercial products.
That chapter alone tells me to avoid this book like the plague.
Either way, WMV codecs stink.

Even without DRM, WMV is a rotten codec.
Ouch! That's a fire sale.
But what does this mean for all the porno that exists?
Ha!!!
Get a bookcase, flip the tower computers on the side.
Rack mounted indeed!

This is especially true of GUI/UI interfaces.
Real men recognize that the text based command line is where you prove your mettle and show who owns this place.
This item was obviously the last April Fool's Article of the day for Slashdot. Droves of Unix programmers converting to Mac OSX is the dead give-away.
But more importantly, all OpenBSD users will be frothing at the mouth -- yep! all seven of them...

When I upgraded from RedHat 7.2 to RedHat 9.0, my S3 968 failed to work in XFree 4. The S3 worked great in XFree 3.X.
So much for driver support...
Sometimes I get a kick out of reading responses posted by verified V*I*R*G*I*N*S.
Much like the old Soviet Union was the Evil Empire per former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
I'm waiting for legislation to ban M$. When does the bombing start?
