Sorry to do it, wish Slashdot had an edit post feature. I forgot to mention that this system may seem unfair if you're a Sci-Fi fan, but if the 'highbrow' lit lists didn't select out what they considered 'noise', even Sci-Fi would get lost in the sales of those shitty romance novels. Those sell big.

I must say though that most Sci-Fi, be it books, movies or TV, really REALLY sucks.

For every Brave New World or Snowcrash there's 100s if not 1000s of published shitwork. I think the legitimate Sci-Fi is lost in the noise of all the shit. If the Sci-Fi industry wants to lift itself from the industry ghetto they need to start being a lot more selective in what they publish, IMO.

The JCP is a joke. Sun ultimate decides what goes into Java. The JCP is free to suggest anything it wants, and sometimes it will get what it asks for because what it asks for is good for Sun...

Bbut in the end, Sun makes the decisions because nobody in the JCP (or out of it for that matter) is free to "fork" Java because the code is not truly Open Source. Nor are they completely free to create their own clean-room Java implementation because Sun holds the language name as a trademark. So you can create a "Java-like language", but you can't call it "Java" without Sun's blessing.

This isn't open source OR open standards OR a really open organization, except in the neverland world of Sun's marketing hype.

Sadly there's not much information there. How did they determine that Microsoft actually used the 'Character' code and not some in-house programmed alternative? Just because the UI remained the same (good for customers using the product) doesn't mean the code is the same underneath. Did they actually get access to the source code, or are they just assuming Microsoft still used it? Would be nice to know the answer to that....

In any case, I find it hard to believe Microsoft would have done this. Not because they are saints, but because certainly they would have learned from the 'Stacker' incident (Which was a patent infrigment, not copyright, but similiar to this case in many ways).

Microsoft might be evil, but they aren't stupid. I'll reserve final judgement until more facts are known.

  11. Eh? on MS Judge to Allow Demonstration of Modular Windows · · Score: 1
Its clear that when Microsoft talks about a modularized version of Windows being unworkable, they are talking about from a business/support perspective, not a technical perspective. So what does WinXP Embedded have to do with anything?

Microsoft's (correct, IMO, though I think they are wrong about a great many things) argument boils down to the fact that if they are forced to modularize Windows support calls will be something like this in the future:

    "What OS do you have?"

    "Windows Modular"

"Sigh...Ok, well, open up a command line and change directories to C:\Windows\SYSTEM32, type dir. Do you see an MSHTML.DLL file there?"

    "No"

"Ok well your version of Windows Modular has no IE support. Do a search/findfiles on your system, is there a Mozilla.exe? Perhaps it was OEMed into your version of Windows Modular."

    "Nope, nothing."

"Well here's the point where I'd tell you to download the latest drivers off our site but your version of Windows Modular has no HTTP or FTP capable client so you're SOL. Thank you have a nice day."
