Microsoft wouldn't have the luxury of skipping the copy protection on a PSX->XBOX emulator because if they did that, they'd be biting the hand of all the PSX developers they are hoping to lure/keep on the XBOX by making PSX game piracy easy with the XBOX.

Urm, what I mean by that is that VA (Not Linux) Systems or whatever they are called this week will force more and more changes (ala the OSDN bar) on Slashdot. As time wears on and they get more and more desperate they will force larger, more unfriendly, less-able-to-be-removed features. The users will eventually get sick of it and go elsewhere.
The other alternative that could happen is Slashdot could try a for-pay subscription service and realize nobody is willing to pay for badly written regurgitated stories (that just point us to other websites anyway), trolls, and unsubstantiated Microsoft bashing.

Having more than one hard-drive doesn't stop you from getting rid of the harddrive icon. As an example, considering UNIX style filesystem mounting... Imagine if the desktop displayed everything under '/'... These directories could be spread across multiple harddrives, but under one virtual desktop/root directory.
However, the real problem I see with the article is they don't suggest how users would deal with partitioning their space if one got rid of the harddrive icon. What I mean is, suppose I create a new directory under my root desktop, how do I specify which harddisk it should be on to better divide the free space I have on each disk? Surely they wouldn't propose that Mac end users should play around with auto mount lists as is done in the UNIX world?
I suppose one solution would be to use logical volumes to treat all harddrives on a system as one single volume, but if so that's a much bigger change than just eliminating the hard-disk icon, and the implications of it should be better explored (if that's the sort of solution they were going for).
Personally, I dont think anyone is particularly confused by hard-disk icons, and think the article is just blowing smoke...The article never really tries to back up its arguments or give real-world alternatives except at a very superficial level.

he heart of "The Unfinished Bombing" is a chapter called "Telling the Story: Three Narratives" in which Linenthal identifies three types of stories the survivors have told themselves while attempting to assimilate the event. The "progressive" narrative focuses on the sense of caring and kinship forged in the shared disaster. It shows a determination to build something positive from the tragedy. The "redemptive" narrative is the response of religious communities as they try to find meaning in an event that threatens to undermine the bedrock beliefs of their faith. The third narrative, the "toxic" narrative, finds neither progress nor redemption. "It is," Linenthal writes, "a story of an unfinished bombing, one that still reaches out to claim people through suicide, to shatter families through divorce, substance abuse, and the corrosive effects of profound and seemingly endless grief."
For the people whose family and friends were murdered in the bombing (It's part of Linenthal's scrupulousness that he uses that word "murdered," and tries to avoid the vagueness of "lost" or "died"), each of these stories has some validity. One woman whose husband, a secret service agent, was killed told Linenthal, "All of the narratives seem to live within my experience, some to greater or lesser degree, from Day 1 to now." This woman, whose name is Pam Whichler, has, at different times, been "absolutely determined" that her family would emerge stronger; felt abandoned by God despite saying that she "felt his presence in my mourning" and that "every day without a disaster is a day to be thankful for"; and become a more questioning believer, more cynical, less tolerant -- as well as a pack-a-day smoker.
In the wake of the Sept. 11 disaster, America is still clinging to the first two of these three narratives. The progressive narrative, in particular, Linenthal writes, "invites people to focus on possibility, opportunity, healing, rebuilding." Only the very cynical, he feels, could dismiss that narrative simply because it doesn't tell the whole story. Of the many examples bolstering the progressive narrative in Oklahoma City -- the people who donated time or money or services, for example -- the most unusual were the 67 massage therapists who went to the site of the Murrah Building to ease the strain on rescue workers. (It's chastising now to read rescue workers remembering how well they were treated in Oklahoma City in contrast with their experience at the 1993 World Trade Center bombing where, Linenthal writes, "vendors hiked the price of bottled water and some rescue workers had to sleep in automobiles.")
Some of the most heartrending stories here involve the rescue dogs, doing what they have been trained to do with no larger understanding of the event, but affected by it nonetheless. The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association tended to the dogs who suffered cuts and needed daily baths and saline treatments to wash out their eyes, and a group in Dallas sent the pooches therapeutic mattresses. Linenthal recounts that after unearthing only dead bodies for so long, the dogs became so despondent that their handlers would hide in the rubble so the dogs could feel the delight of finding a live person. If the rescue work had that effect on dogs, we can imagine the toll it took on human beings, even those who were not directly involved in the effort.
Tread carefully. When I uninstalled (a legal copy of) EasyCD 5 from a Windows 2000 computer it deleted some device driver files it shouldn't have and my computer wouldn't boot until I booted 2000 in CLI mode off the CDROM and manually fixed the mess the uninstall caused. This is a known problem among users (check out Usenet) but Roxio has largely been sweeping it under the rug and not acknowledging this!

man pages assume you already know the command and are just using the page for reference, not for learning (eg. I know grep has a command for case-insensitivity, what is it now?). So that's why they are the way they are.
Having said that, though, I agree with your idea and think man pages could be made a lot more useful. Most commands with a billion switches (ls, etc) tend to only have a couple of those switches used by real people (and not shell scripts) on a day to day basis. Some sort of pointer into the most used switches and examples would be a Good Thing.
I believe a lot of this poor documentation (from an end user's view) is still a holdover from the 'White Coat Guru' attitude that still has sway over many UNIX users..You know, the 'RTFM' guys who believe they and they alone are on the 'cluetrain' because they know every obscure feature of sed and awk.
The reason I switched to open-source software was to get away from all the stupid EULA politics and policing of the traditional software world. I hate to see this pigheadedness seep into the open-source world.
Seep into the open-source world? It already poured in a long time. It has always been an issue but the first time it came to a head in a major way was the QT/GPL war of a few years back.
And you're right; this sort of thing sucks and wars over the exact lettering of different licenses and how they may or may not be compatible with other licenses is one of the major factors holding OSS/FS back from more mainstream acceptance.
This sort of thing is, RIGHT NOW, scaring off corporations who don't want to even think about the legal hassles that might be involved with trying to comply with 10 different OSS/FS licenses. As an example, they may wish to integrate their software into a non-Windows OS (such as Linux) without reinventing the wheel and recreating various existing open libraries. When they take a look at the potential complexity involved, from a legal standpoint (not technical!), they just say 'fuck it' and keep going the closed-source/Windows-only route.
I've seen this happen first hand at two different companies; engineers want to open things up, management looks into OSS/FS, sees the drubbing from the community (and threats of lawsuits everywhere!) other companies take when attempting to go OSS/FS while making very minor missteps with license compliance, usually due to the semantics of trying to mix multiple OSS/FS licenses. Management tends to nix the idea very quickly.
Its not so much a matter of not liking RTCW..Its a matter of wanting a more realistic game. RTCW is a good shooter, but its a cartoon. You can take 50 bullets and live and you fight undead zombies and such.
Medal of Honor is for people who want a more realistic FPS experience that is more about stealth & tactics than running around with a Really Big Gun. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I love to run around at 60 MPH with a Really Big Gun, but sometimes I like to play games that are a bit closer to real-life simulation.

Problems regarding accounts or comment
These Tivo devices entrance me; there are many shows I would love watching more frequently, but my schechdule (is that how on spells the word?) often conflicts with the time-slots of my favourite programmes. Many of us found comfort after the Oklahoma City bombing in the knowledge that it turned out to be the work of a pair of lone kooks (no matter what Gore Vidal claims) and not perpetrated by an organized and well-funded cabal of middle-Eastern terrorists, as was initially speculated. Well, that comfort isn't available anymore, and Oklahoma City offers Americans the only precedent we have for what lies in the future for a city and its people after a terrorist attack.

he heart of "The Unfinished Bombing" is a chapter called "Telling the Story: Three Narratives" in which Linenthal identifies three types of stories the survivors have told themselves while attempting to assimilate the event. The "progressive" narrative focuses on the sense of caring and kinship forged in the shared disaster. It shows a determination to build something positive from the tragedy. The "redemptive" narrative is the response of religious communities as they try to find meaning in an event that threatens to undermine the bedrock beliefs of their faith. The third narrative, the "toxic" narrative, finds neither progress nor redemption. "It is," Linenthal writes, "a story of an unfinished bombing, one that still reaches out to claim people through suicide, to shatter families through divorce, substance abuse, and the corrosive effects of profound and seemingly endless grief."
For the people whose family and friends were murdered in the bombing (It's part of Linenthal's scrupulousness that he uses that word "murdered," and tries to avoid the vagueness of "lost" or "died"), each of these stories has some validity. One woman whose husband, a secret service agent, was killed told Linenthal, "All of the narratives seem to live within my experience, some to greater or lesser degree, from Day 1 to now." This woman, whose name is Pam Whichler, has, at different times, been "absolutely determined" that her family would emerge stronger; felt abandoned by God despite saying that she "felt his presence in my mourning" and that "every day without a disaster is a day to be thankful for"; and become a more questioning believer, more cynical, less tolerant -- as well as a pack-a-day smoker.
In the wake of the Sept. 11 disaster, America is still clinging to the first two of these three narratives. The progressive narrative, in particular, Linenthal writes, "invites people to focus on possibility, opportunity, healing, rebuilding." Only the very cynical, he feels, could dismiss that narrative simply because it doesn't tell the whole story. Of the many examples bolstering the progressive narrative in Oklahoma City -- the people who donated time or money or services, for example -- the most unusual were the 67 massage therapists who went to the site of the Murrah Building to ease the strain on rescue workers. (It's chastising now to read rescue workers remembering how well they were treated in Oklahoma City in contrast with their experience at the 1993 World Trade Center bombing where, Linenthal writes, "vendors hiked the price of bottled water and some rescue workers had to sleep in automobiles.")
Some of the most heartrending stories here involve the rescue dogs, doing what they have been trained to do with no larger understanding of the event, but affected by it nonetheless. The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association tended to the dogs who suffered cuts and needed daily baths and saline treatments to wash out their eyes, and a group in Dallas sent the pooches therapeutic mattresses. Linenthal recounts that after unearthing only dead bodies for so long, the dogs became so despondent that their handlers would hide in the rubble so the dogs could feel the delight of finding a live person. If the rescue work had that effect on dogs, we can imagine the toll it took on human beings, even those who were not directly involved in the effort.

Having said that, though, I agree with your idea and think man pages could be made a lot more useful. Most commands with a billion switches (ls, etc) tend to only have a couple of those switches used by real people (and not shell scripts) on a day to day basis. Some sort of pointer into the most used switches and examples would be a Good Thing.
I believe a lot of this poor documentation (from an end user's view) is still a holdover from the 'White Coat Guru' attitude that still has sway over many UNIX users..You know, the 'RTFM' guys who believe they and they alone are on the 'cluetrain' because they know every obscure feature of sed and awk.
Seep into the open-source world? It already poured in a long time. It has always been an issue but the first time it came to a head in a major way was the QT/GPL war of a few years back. And you're right; this sort of thing sucks and wars over the exact lettering of different licenses and how they may or may not be compatible with other licenses is one of the major factors holding OSS/FS back from more mainstream acceptance.
This sort of thing is, RIGHT NOW, scaring off corporations who don't want to even think about the legal hassles that might be involved with trying to comply with 10 different OSS/FS licenses. As an example, they may wish to integrate their software into a non-Windows OS (such as Linux) without reinventing the wheel and recreating various existing open libraries. When they take a look at the potential complexity involved, from a legal standpoint (not technical!), they just say 'fuck it' and keep going the closed-source/Windows-only route.
I've seen this happen first hand at two different companies; engineers want to open things up, management looks into OSS/FS, sees the drubbing from the community (and threats of lawsuits everywhere!) other companies take when attempting to go OSS/FS while making very minor missteps with license compliance, usually due to the semantics of trying to mix multiple OSS/FS licenses. Management tends to nix the idea very quickly.

Medal of Honor is for people who want a more realistic FPS experience that is more about stealth & tactics than running around with a Really Big Gun. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I love to run around at 60 MPH with a Really Big Gun, but sometimes I like to play games that are a bit closer to real-life simulation.
Don't forget the 10 minute cut-scene monologues of a soldier that looks suspiciously like Forrest Gump going on and on about getting back to his wife.
