Wasn't the Mac Cube a huge flop? We have one at the hospital, and it's pretty sweet (as small as a gamecube, and no fan, so it's silent).

Then again, the eMac and Cube were merely underpreformers. They were certainly not flops in the Apple III/Lisa/Newton sense.

I asked this once before, but I'm still unclear... OK, so the 286, 386 and 486 were 3 separate generations of microprocessors. And since you can't trademark a number, and since companies like Cyrix were releasing their own PC-Compatable "486s," instead of releasing the next generation as the generic 586, they called it the trademarkable Pentium. Then came the Pentium Pro, Pentium Pro w/MMX (which is basically what the Pentium II was I believe), Pentium III and the current Pentium IV.

My question is this: Are all of these "Pent"iums still of the "586" generation? If not, which of these were in the same generation? What is the "X86" generation equivilent of the most-recent Pentium IV that we are currently in? Anyone know?

This camera claims to be five megapixels, and I'm sure that in some engineering fantasy land it pushes that many electrons. At about $200, it's probably the cheapest 5MP camera you'll see. But in this case, cheap doesn't equal good. In our tests, its picture quality was barely equivalent to a 2MP camera, which can be found for much less than two Benjamins. It starts up slow and cycles slower, taking more than five seconds between shots. Whites were blown-out and images were overly green. If Kermit the Frog is on your list, then maybe. Otherwise, no. Our Digital Camera Product Guide has much better choices for every budget.

PDA: iPAQ used to stand for quality. Then HP bought Compaq, and you can't bet on an iPAQ anymore. Witness the fundamentally flawed iPAQ rz1715. HP's low-end PDA was designed to compete with low-cost products from Dell and Palm, but it lacks any of their redeeming qualities. The glacially slow processor and anemic memory make using it torture, but at least the pain is short lived--because the battery wears out hours before the ones on comparable units do. It's a pity this iPAQ's so bad, but don't saddle yourself or your friends, with this boat anchor. There are better products available for less. Our PDA Product Guide has details.

Phone: Samsung has built a major brand around the twin concepts of style and quality. But as we found when we tested the Samsung D415, the first slider phone for Cingular, style without quality just doesn't cut it. Sure, the phone looks cool. But svelte it is not. In fact, our reviewer called it a "big chunky slab," which is not what I want to carry around in my pocket. It's both big and difficult to manage. The four-way navigation pad seems to have been designed by orangutans without opposable thumbs. Finding a command in the menus takes longer than it took the Minnow's crew to escape Gilligan's Island, and selecting that option requires either two hands or a stutter-step of rapid finger movement. The audio's bad, the speaker phone is muffled, and the processor is slow. Think again if you're looking for a fashionable phone--and check out our Phone Product Guide for better choices.

Desktop PC: For Apple, the entry-level eMac really does represent Think Different. That's because for a company that prides itself on quality, this computer is different. As in bad. On the plus side, it's stylish. On the downside, it's slow, underpowered, and pathetic. The 40GB hard drive will fill up quickly, the lack of a DVD burner makes offloading files impossible, and the Radeon 9200 graphics card won't even run this fall's hot Mac games. And at around $800, this eMac ain't cheap. If you're considering a home Apple, think different. Buy a Dell. Or be prepared to spend a lot more for an acceptable Apple computer. Our Desktop Product Guide can lead you to the best Apples, along with the best of the rest.

Notebook PC: Voodoo has made quite a name for itself in the enthusiast category, delivering super-fast tweaked-out boxes for gamers and power users who don't want to build their own. We've favorably reviewed a number of their PCs, and found them fast, well built, and good-looking. Yes, the VoodooPC Envy m:380 looks good, but one out of three is not enough. At an outrageous price of over $4,000, this notebook should be spitting fire and hauling butt. Instead, it just sits there and delivers less-than-stellar performance for a gaming notebook. It barely even beat Sony's lame VAIO A190. If you're looking for a gaming notebook, we've got better options, for less, in our laptop product guide.

Well, I agree that in the end, profit is #1, BUT... I can point out that there are several companies (like nintendo) who could be making more profit if they wanted to.

The could be publishing a new zelda and Mario every year like EA does. There has been only 2 traditional mario games released since 1994 (Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine), and before you say it - yes, they release a LOT of "spin-off" mario games. But.. they could ALSO release a lot of shitty mario game every year or the exact same fun ones with a different background every year too.

I love the GTA series. But GTA1 and 2 was the same game and GTA3, VC and SA all seem the same game to me as well (but again, ALL fun). Mario could have had 3 sequels on the N64 and 3 on the gamecube and all would have been million sellers.

So yes, I agree that they want maximum profit, but they DO also hold back, in my opinion. AND... nintendo for one also takes care of it's fans (FREE zelda bonus discs??? Those RULED! And probably 90% of the people who got them were going to preorder the game anyway)

They'll go out to all the "cool bars" no matter how many times they go home alone. Usually they stand on the side with other friends (or alone) and just "fake laugh" all night. These guys, when they finally get a girl/get laid, they don't shut up about it till 3 years later when they finally get another girl.

First off (and I'll say it again...) - this is NOT a political flamewar/troll post...

But did it seem to anyone else that the L.A. Times in the past year or two had gotten WAY too opinionated in their HARD NEWS stories? I mean, I read the LA times occationally, but it seemed somewhere around a year after 9/11 it became VIOLENTLY anti-Bush/anti-republican. I mean, ALL media sources have bias. Here in NY, we have the amazing NY Times. And yes, it has an "opinion" on world politics. Despite what conservative radio says though, I felt that the NY Times still kept it's job of presenting the news in a fair way. The opinion/Op-Ed pages of the NY Times rightfully had opinions (and twice a week has "conservative" writers), so I felt there was fairness there.

But... take a crappy (although sometimes guilty pleasure) newspaper like the NY Post. It's a tabloid newspaper that 4/7 times a week the front page headline will be "OH NO PARIS HILTON (did whatever)" or this week, despite all the news in the world, the #1 story that took the entire front page cover was some guy buying a $10,000 martini (i kid you not). (I always assumed "The Daily Beagle" from Spiderman was based on the Post)

Again... this is NOT a political flamewar/troll post... and I like listening to talkradio, but if I listen to Air America or Hannity, I know what I'm getting. They'll focus on the topics of "their" side. But... I don't want that when I read hard news. Luckily, the NY Times doesn't do that. A typical page 1 lately has the #1 story of the day, something about Iraq, some economy/employment article, a local (NY) story, and big international news. Perhaps a blurb/picture about a big sports event. While they will often have stories showing porblems in the Iraq war - hey, problems exist. But they also recently had a story of how women are regaining power in Iraq and schools are being rapidly built (sounds fair to me).

But the LA Times seemed like the NY Post at times. Did anyone else notice during the recall election there was a story about Arnold, and it was negative EVERY DAY? I mean, come on.

For disclosure, I voted Kerry and I voted Gore in 2000. I watch opinion shows for their opinions. When I read about hard news, I want the news, not spin (with the exception of the Op-Ed page). Perhaps (i'm seriously asking here, not flaming), is this why their publication numbers fell? Comments? Once again, and finally, this is NOT a political flamewar/troll post. Just my opinion.

That being said, I also loved Superman II. Heist was a great movie as well. As for Dodgeball and Kill Bill, while I found the first to be cheeky humor (and COMPLETELY understand why others wouldn't like it/hate it - just like you and "Daddy Day Care"), the latter was actually quite good and beautifully well done. FYI - "Volume 2" has about 1% of the gore of Volume 1. If you were a little put off by the finale of Volume 1 (the scene with all the Japanese gangsters the the "limbs" - I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it), then let me assure you that while Uma does do some killing in the second part, it is MUCH less bloody. Plus, there is a lot more character development/background into Volume 1. But then again, Quentin is DEFINATELY a love him/hate him kinda person. I know few people who think he's "ok" - many love or hate him (kinda like I've seen with fans/foes of Woody Allen or Stanley Kubrick)
