  1. A good "compromise" on Defining "Planet" · · Score: 4, Insightful

With the discovery over the past few decades of the Oort Cloud and Kupier Belt, it seems obvious that there are tens, if not hundreds/thousands of Pluto-sized objects out there. Obviously, we're not going to name all 10,000 of these rocks "planets." But then again, Pluto has a special place in history as the last "great" planet discovery on the level of Uranus and Neptune, so purists wouldn't want to ruin that by demoting it.

My solution? Define "Planet" as something bigger than Pluto, maybe with Mercury as the smallest, or whatever. But keep Pluto as a planet (as an exception ot the rule) for historical purposes. But, you may be thinking, "that's so stupid! Why give something a name if that name is now invalid?" The answer? We do it all the time. Here's an example...

Take a look at ANY diet softdrink/diet product with Nutrasweet. It warns you that this product contains "Phenylalanine" and should not be taken by "Pheylketonurics." Take a look at that word. It's called "Phenyl-keton-uria" (PKU) because years ago, people with this disease were diagnosed when "Phenylketones" were detected in their Urine. However, no one diagnoses PKU via a urine test anymore, they use another method. So should we change the name of the disease? Of course not. But due to historical significance, we keep it. Unlike the Indian/Native American designation, "Planet Pluto" should not offend anyone :-) Therefore, I say we define a planet however they want, but keep Pluto for historical significance. I knew med school would start paying off soon :-)

  2. From a Cornell Alum... on Cornell Implementing Bandwidth Charges · · Score: 4, Interesting

I went to Cornell ('01) and one thing that was VERY popular were entire bootleg movies on the network neighborhoods (~650 megs each). Those would get passed around so quickly or simply viewed over the connection. My friend even got busted for having like 40 gigs of movies he was sharing with Cornell kids and FTP.

However, I don't see Cornell's point since we were CHARGED for our internet usage, and this charge was something that was comparable, if not higher, than simply getting off the dorm LAN and splitting a cable modem with your roommate(s). Then again, if Cornell only makes it a nominal fee (more of a symbolic fine), I can see them having a claim. It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

Wonder if in 12 years (when the probe is supposed to reach Pluto) the public will be as fascinated with the pictures coming back as much as with the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft."

This is coming from my astronomy professor at Cornell (who is a major NASA player, directing the Rover missions, etc). He says that Pioneer, while amazingly sucessful in terms of science, was never veyr sucessful to the public because it's camera were pretty crappy. They produced pictures that were not much better than the best ground-based telescopes of the day. Voyager capitalized on this and was given high-def cameras.
Pictures are among the less important tools on those spacecraft (again, according to a prof), where the radiation scopes, temperature, etc are much more important.
For a good example of this, look at the first probe to make it to Mars - Mariner 9 (9, right?). It finally reached Mars after years of failures, only to arrive during a global dust storm! The public interest was quickly wanned.

Yes, but should we try and recapture Pioneer/Voyager spacecraft? They may have finished their Earth-Solar-System use, but they still have one more secondary (maybe even tertiary) goal - their plaques for interstellar communication.

To capture them and place them in the Smithsonian would cancel it's final purpose.

I have seen (from 3/4 of those mentioned) web links that claim this to be true, but never from anything more than a professor's heresay or a student newspaper. MIT, Cal Tech and Duke were never considered for the Ivy, and they are way better than Penn, Columbia and arguably even the "big three" Harvard Priceton and Yale.

I have heard this rumor mostly from Tutfts, and I always thought it was sad. Tufts is a fine school and rather than being pissed off they don't have a stupid title they should brag about the qualities that they DO have.
