You can't be serious. A New Hope stayed in theaters that long because there weren't any other options for watching the thing. VCRs weren't really ubiquitous, and people didn't buy videos much back then. If a movie stays in the theaters longer than 3 months these days it is phenomenal.

I have to agree with pokerdad. PM was decent compared to the originals. People set the originals on such a high pedestal that they forgot how bad they were. PM was more of the same. II and III were pathetic attempts to reclaim the overestimated greatness of the originals.

  7. Not fructose on Fructose As Culprit In the Obesity Epidemic · · Score: 1

The problem is not fructose. It is overconsumption. People have been fed this notion that one type of food or the other is making them fat, and cutting out that type of food will make them loose weight. It's like there is some "magic combination" of food that we are supposed to eat, and, conveniently, you have to buy the book to learn what it is. In almost all cases it is a simple matter of overconsumption. If you eat too much (insert uber-healthy food here) it will be stored as fat. It's not fructose's fault anymore than it's any other specific food's fault. It's quantity. The amount of exercise and activity people typically get doesn't help matters much either.

Maybe it's just a case that he really understands the severity of the piracy problem. Bank robbery is tough to pull off, and the FBI will be hot on your tail to boot. Piracy involves mass reproduction of media usually somewhere in Asia. The FBI can't really solve that problem. The Bank robbery situation is well in hand, but the piracy thing is going to require billions in foreign aid, some serious diplomacy, and an international body that can actually do something about its resolutions.

What? Oh you were talking about piracy. Nevermind.

I absolutely agree. With the way the human body doesn't maintain anything it isn't using, this is a very reasonable hypothesis, if not one of those moments where everyone needs to stop and say, "Duh!" Aging has just as much, if not more, to do with disuse than it has to do with calendar years. Muscle starts to atrophy very quickly, if it isn't used enough to warrant keeping it around. The brain behaves similarly. Use it or lose it isn't just a cliche, it's practically the law of the body. It is only logical to think that the so-called "junk" DNA is still around because it serves a good purpose for the survival and/or normal function of the organism.

  12. Re:Shit.... on Some Soft Drinks May Damage Your DNA · · Score: 2, Interesting

Caffeine may be a problem for the DNA as well. Its chemical structure is very similar to the nucleotide bases in DNA. I would bet that caffeine stands a decent chance of being substituted for one of the original bases in a newly replicated strand of DNA. It would probably just not be able to replicate, but it could also give rise to cancer. I recall a study where caffeine consumption was linked to cancer, but the study was done at BYU, so there would at least be a public perception of bias. Whether the study was solid or not, I don't know if any further research was done.

Do you think that evolution is well supported? and 2. Do you think evolution is widely accepted? As written it makes Americans look absurdly foolish, when they probably never got past question 1. Someone might know there is a lot of evidence for evolution, but they might think the evidence is lacking for some reason. That may or may not be ignorance on the part of the individual.

The article and the summary are from completely different worlds. The thing is a patch that can be earned in the Los Angeles area. There's a museum centered on biology here that offers a patch for visiting. It's not a merit badge. The last paragraph of the article specifically spells that out. 25. They should sue on Boy Scouts Introduce Merit Badge For Not Pirating · · Score: 1

It makes sense. I've known for years that the BSA is the scouts. Now there's some BS (not Boy Scouts) group stealing their intellectual property abbreviation. I have actually heard a radio ad for the BSA trying to get people to only use purchased software in their business, and I seriously had to think about the BSA abbreviation. I remember thinking why would the Scouts be pushing for legal software use. If we live in a world where the World Wrestling Federation loses to the World Wildlife Fund because people might confuse the two, then we live in a world where the Scouts need to sue a company who is "championing" copyright law and actually saying "BSA" in their promotions.
