Your scenario reminds me of what I wrote on groklaw this morning about Newham, London Choosing MS over linux.
It's a new type of marketing technique.

Hint to MS: Rigged from the get go???

Maybe Newham was already going with MS from the start when MS gave them an incentive to act like they would try linux. After which, of course, they choose MS instead.
You do recall the "switched to apple" and "switched to MS" campaigne with the fake users reportedly switching plateforms? I think the "switched to MS" user was a fake in response to the "switched to apple" ads.
I think Newham was a planned publicity stunt that MS will use as "case law".
PS- TimButterfield(16686)??? wow, you've been on slashdot since the beginning.
My girlfriend reminded me that we did see all of reign in darkness, I guess i was blocking it out. It was writen, produced and starred the same guy. His co-start would lift a cell phone to his ear and yell "we got a situation here!" without ever dialing the phone.
As for Frost, The camera panned to a guy standing near a table in a white t-shirt, panned to the guy who cam in the door with a gun, panned back to the guy in the white t-shirt, this time you could see all the dye packs and wiring. As the guy at the door began shooting you could see the white t-shirt puffing up with each dye pack bursts. There was a huge lack of dialoge too.
I would recommend that you rent them for yourself but I'm a nice guy.:)
Actually, I'm not saying that for a PC to be usefull it has to be hooked to the internet. It was sort of a sarcastic comment pointing out the fact that the FCC, RIAA, MPAA and anyone who gets paided by them want to make it that way. I would welcome a wireless BBS with some fidonet and local P2P of "distributable" MP3's and stuff. Those in central "control" don't want to let us.
This month the Kansas governor had rap CDs removed from all libraryies.
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/06/li brary y.cdsettlement.ap/index.html
This statement is not helping your cause, trust me.
Also, a long, long time ago, GRC warned microsoft about the whole raw sockets thing. pleaded and petitioned. MS never listened. welcome to the worlds greatest spam distribution OS.
If the Gov. allowed us to share an area of the spectrum with our friends and neighbors say for up to ten miles is all directions, using Wireless links, (Think old CB technology but no interference now that we know how to Multiplex on Spread spectrum); this could be linked in a way simular to the internet. The main exception to the simularity is that you would not be dependent on your local copper wire monopoly. This would allow you to communicate without using one of the big controllers of communication. All things must go up to them before they can come back down at their destination. This is a policy which you are not allowed to violate. All your communication MUST be monitored via a central control. Everything usefull must have a toll bridge. If they can't erect a physical toll bridge they will erect a legal toll bridge.
Those who have invested in the copper and cell based networks will always lobby (pay people off) to keep you on your leesh. Wireless is only allowed to be usefull for connecting you to central control(an ISP or letting you connect your home PC's together along with central control). Of course they will never explain it to you this way, It's a secret.
*** >Obviously shattering a drive would make it difficult to recover from, they are more than capable of putting it back together or analyzing individual fragments. Very few would want to recover a drive that was shredded, but there are people that have perfected the technique and are able to do it.
Finally, some seem to think that you can degauss a hard drive but this is simply not practical. The magnetic fields required to do this would require medical or military grade equipement and a very large amount of power. Information destroyed in this way is also recoverable regardless, simply at an increasing cost for the power of the magnetic field used.

Can I recommend holding the little platters to a bench grinder until they are nothing but dust?
Cost: $60
Time: 20 minutes.
As far as recovery, I would imagine that you just record the analog signal from the (so called) digital drive and apply an algorith slightly simular to reading '2in5' or other multiwidth barcode signals. Look for step changes at certain amplitudes during the rise from 0 to 1 and so on. Sounds like a fun project for the do-it-yourselfer.
Another thing. Only two important scenarios should be noted:
1) When the time comes (knock knock, open up its the [FBI!][Al Quada!][policio!]), you do not have time to write random data 20 times. You better have a very well encrpyted partition that does not automount, forget having a swap file/partition, a password for the PC is not enough:). Alternatly , you could use a USB flash drive and a method to physically destroy the chip in five seconds. The drive should be sitting in an arbor press vertically while your using it
2) If you ever find yourself having the time and need to destroy your data, go with the bench grinder.
I would imagine that the biggest secret is that anytime the police report that they recovered the data from tha laptop, It was because the crook was careless, not because the cops have skills. They never mention breaking AES256 or anything. They just don't bother to tell you that the data was wide open. I think its called a mindfuck in some circles.

Linux vs. Windows
·
· Score: 1
This was an accurate analogy back in 2002.
Linux "just works" now.
Digital cameras
Smartmedia
Hot plug USB drives
...
Anything you throw at it, It just works.
(except for lexmark printers, please use an HP brand 3in1)
It will take a few years before "those in the know" get it. Your boss will not get it because he goes by what Microsoft (Yankee Group, Forbes...etc) tells him about linux in their "Independent studies". Or he reads stuff that is a year or two old.
He hasn't installed Mandrake 10.0 or Knoppix 3.4.
Yes, linux is manual if thats what you want.
Yes, linux "just works" if thats what you want.
Just ask my quilt sewing, home cooking mom.
When I gave her a Windows machine there was constant fiddling with AV, Zone alarm, Popups (blockers), spyware, adware, redirected searches taking over the browser. all microsoft SHIT.
Constant headaches.
I gave her a Mandrake linux system and now:
one click on KPPP/NetZero and she is dialed in. the browser launches automatically. NOTHING tries to intrude on her experience. "nothin but net". :)
Mom loves linux.
Perhaps this is the way to say it:
Yes, linux is manual if thats what you want.
Yes, linux is automatic if you want that too.
What Mr. Enderle was trying to say is:
"Free software and the idiots that would pay $699"
Think about it, what idiot would buy "free" software.:)
Free software may hurt Redmonds economy DEEPLY but would have a positive effect on your wallet and your local economy. No one will just put their MS tax refund under the mattress. We will spend it on something that actually has value. We must press this important issue to all who try to say that linux is a cancer. Linux allows money to flow from place to place, exchange of goods for services and what not. Money sent to Redmond stays in Redmond. It's a black hole. Support your local economy. Hang banners at your grocery store, paint this message on overpasses, tell everyone you know. The money we save using FOSS will contribute to local jobs for our neighbors. Think global, spend local.
Vote for me.:) (actually, I'm not running for anything.)
Lets make sure that all searches for BSA pull in the Ernie Ball story as the #1 link, just like the "litigious bastards" campagne against The SCO Group.
Put these links in every post and web page that you can!
No way, that's $10,000,000 for a license. What makes you think there stock is worth anything NEAR what what it will initially sell for?
I said it before and I'll say it again. In a few months, this stock will drop to its fair value of four bucks.
I just a f'n search engine, come on people!
Damn straight. Every time password change is forced, I change all of mine( 5 of them)... to the exact same thing.
I also keep "codes.txt" on my desktop and I write my voicemail password on my phone. I'm plain old sick of this crap. I just want to do my engineering job, I din't give a damn about security anymore. (...at work anyway.)
I am strongly against any kind of bioID. I want a USB badge type thing. If an RFID badge is good enough to get me in the front door, why can't it log me into the network?
The only weakness in our network is a security hole called windows. If we would all install linux we would be able to rest a little. And another thing: IT deparpments have created all this paranoia just to keep themselves employed.
Show me the false claims with specificity.
OpenOffice
Mozilla

Bill, You recognize the need to start winning back trust? Burn the BSA.
Quit trying to befriend your enemy. we don't want to be friends with the likes of you.

I'm curious to know, how many poeple recognize your sig?
....from a box of ass gaskets.

Actually since Thursday, June 28th, 2001, or before... Windows XP Raw Socket Controversy It's not even that they didn't know how stupid they are.

Windows? Blech :)
now what fun would that be?
Reign In Darkness.
and
Frost
I couldn/t finish watching either of them.
Oh, same with Brazil.
Propaganda designed to weaken the thought provoking 1984. I wish someone would produce an acurate 1984 movie.
