Actually, a previous poster pointed out that he once spent $40 on a pair of sunglasses. He regrets it because he then sat on them.

I spent $80 on a pair of oakleys back in 1990 and sat on them 10 times. each time a lense popped out and an arm popped off. I just popped them back on an all was well. (if you do the math it's like having 10 pairs of $8 glasses over the course of 2 years.)

Also, at work, a high velocity bolt hit me in the "glasses", the oakleys came away with a small scratch.

So, you can truly get you moneys worth sometimes.

Oh, and I was getting laid http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Laid like crazy back then. (this was before I found slashdot)

I admit that I'll never spend $80 on a pair of sunglasses again but I'm proud to be more of an ignorant bastard now than I ever was. :)

Business ready Databases, webserver, dns server...

    IDE for developing GUI applications

This list goes on. WinXP comes with what??? two bells and one whistle.

You would have to shell out well over $1000.00 to get all the windows solutions to your problems. why would you do that to yourself? Should I bother to mention the windows compatible adware, spyware, virus and holes that keep my coworkers talking about ad-aware and zone-alarm all day at work. I just sit back and laugh at them. They are finally getting curious about my "hard to install" linux. so I gave them a CD that did not require install to run. (knoppix and Suse Live CDs)

Of course, they guy who resists linux the most fixs windows PCs. He makes a fortune from reinstalling windows for his shade tree clients .
He asked me "how would I make any money if the PCs never break down?"

Yes, As others had commented on SuSE being the "global" #1 distro (RH is Americas #1?) the things that set it apart are YaST which is a "MS control panel" or "Mandrake Control Center" type of tool which is far greater and more mature then the two previously mentioned tools. Hardware recognition is steller and SuSE is known as a very security hardened distro. Perhaps it is the out of box iptables script, permissions and the ease at which your install can configure a hard disk with no swap file and a TWOFISH encrypted /home.

Now if your looking at home use go with Mandrake for its multimedia support. Running Knoppix is cool for a few days but you'll soon go back to your regular hard drive install from three CD's.

Sounds right to me. In fact, I've been using nothing but linux on the desktop for years. It's not a matter of linux being ready for the desktop, It's about YOU being ready for linux. :) Hell my mom uses it. RHE might be the big name in the corp. world but distrowatch shows that Mandrake is the big dog at home. It's easy to install AND has the best 3D games and stuff RPM'ed. Microsoft want's to take your mind off linux on the desktop by saying it's only a competitor in the server room. Microsoft also took linux off their enemy #1 list about the same time they funded the SCO v IBM case. MS thought they took care of the linux problem. Chances are bill gates is crapping his pants about now.

Perhaps someone with a "geared towards home users" site could average or compair their findings with yours. Google is used by "employees" all day long so they are not a good representation of home users. (unless we could get google to do an hourly breakdown of browser usage.) I use IE all day long and Mozilla all night long. You can interpret this as "I'm forced to use IE all day long". At home, I tried Firefox a few times and it always leaves me wanting more control over animated gifs. The extra couple of MBs for a Mozilla download is well worth it. Of course I just use a distro that includes Mozilla, most do.
