    1) Spend 3-4months at minimum planning the event, weekly meetings, etc...
    2) Ensure your network and power setup is solid. Power is one of the most important things to consider, the last thing you want is 300 gamers bitching and asking when the power is coming back on in the corner, or near the door, or whatever.
    3) Your hall costs, power costs and insurance (A great idea, however if you get an appropriate center ie. A large gathering hall at a hotel.. and make everyone sign a "were not responsible for equipment or you're own stupidity" then that would do it... (I would speak to whom ever is allowing you to host it. ie. hotel manager, warehouse owner... etc..) 4) Big companies in the gaming industry usually can provide some large door prizes (ie. amd, intel, radeon, nvidia, etc..)
    5) Local computer stores could be charged to have a booth to sell network cards/cables/fans/anything that a gamer my want, or need because of a hardware failure.
    6) If you don't want to charge computer companies for attendance, have one of them provide a large prize (ie. computer case built with components for the gaming geek (top of the line everything).
    7) Have extra people to help, and try not to run too many tounrments!!! Be specific with times, odds are you will run late.
    8) When it comes to games, one thing that worked good for us was the signup form had about 15 checkboxes with games, q3a, ut2k4, wc3, cs, et, etc... and after we had a 'chunk' of gamers signed up we annonced the official game tounrments, and we also provided a few 'public' game servers for some of the games that weren't being run in official tounrments.
    9) RUN IT 24hours, I don't care if its a 2 day lan or 12day lan, if you run it 24hours, you never have to worry about a gamer not having a wonderful time.
    10) Have it near hotels & downtown (bars for older gamers).
    11) Do not allow drugs/alcohol in the gaming room (duh, but I just thought I'd mention it).
    12) A very important one... Have gamers under 18 have a signature from their guardian on the signup sheet at the door.
    13) If your concerned about stolen equipment, check everyone in, and check everyone out. If someone leaves with equipment, you should have people on 'security' that will stop anyone caring equipment out. Our rules were "If you take your system out, you're done for the weekend" and "We are not responsible for your system, cd's, mouse, keyboard, etc... You don't want people brining equipment in and out all weekend, that makes it easy for people to steal things.

However the event was started 6years ago, and ran better every year, starting with 114 people, finish last year with 300people++ and turning people away at the door who didn't pre-register because we were over capacity.

Oh ya and advertising, ONLINE, on gaming servers, on irc, around the city, and if you can somehow get it, a radio blurb. Word of mouth is great, especially if you have 20minions spreading the word everyday ( at college/university/work/etc.. )

Well considering I just arrived here through heavy traffic (it's the start of a long weekend in Canada), I can't agree with this auto black box thing. I saw 2 slow drivers in front of me almost both cause accidents, and yet they were both traveling at significant slower speeds (closer to speed limit) and breaking far earlier then myself. I'm 22 years old, and I have plenty of driving experience (living in the country driving since 16). Frankly, I don't see how 'slow driver' = a good driver.... I have been in one accident... and you'd guess it, some 40year old drunk smoked me, and I tried to avoid, but having a 91' sundance just didn't even me quick traction and speed I needed to avoid a drunk who turned infront of me 10feet before I was about to go through the lights. I cannot see how anyone would justify that a slow driver is a safe one. My mother for example drivers dead on the speed limit, she has never caused an accident... but she's been hit 4 times, 3 from behind, and 1 from the side... she's a good driver.. but very timid on the road, and if she was a little more aggressive she may have avoided one or two of those unfortunate accidents. Someone earlier stated that this device is what all safe drivers should want, and personally I consider myself a safe driver, and I want a device that records when people cut other drivers off, turn without turning signals, break and swirve into traffic for little squirrels, etc.. I do not however want a device that says "SPEED LIMIT 50" actual speed "67" = BAD DRIVER. Often times, and I was even told this in drivers ED that going with the FLOW of traffic is more safe then sticking to the speed limit, especially if the speed change is reasonable. Just my $0.02 from north of the border.

Actually I'm almost positive that regardless of who put the code in, if the ACTUAL owner of the code distributes it knowingly and continues to do so then said code is GPL'd because they authorized it by a) releasing it with they're software b) continueing to do so. I drive 30minutes+ everyday. I find the biggest problem on the road is people who are unable to succesfully complete a lane change or turn a corner without coming to a virtual stand still. People who are hesitant when making lane changes, and slow down to extremely slow speeds when making lane changes and turns are the ones that cause T-Bone accidents and fender benders all over the place. I've witnessed 7 accidents as a driver, most at intersections. All were caused by someone hesitating or for example turning out and going extremely slow not giving the driver with the right of way enough time to slow down thus causing a collision. I've also been hit by a drunk driver. Yes, I am a speeder. The fact that I'm confident in how I drive, know my limits and allways drive around or below the speed limit in poor weather does not make me a bad or evil person for speeding on dry pavement with good traction and visibility. Having a light that auto-matically changes when I'm coming up on it and going 10km/h (5m/h) over the speed limit not only puts me at a risk for causing an accident if someone turns left infront of me and the light changes with too little room for me to stop before the light. My personal opinion is that people who are going below the speed limit in good weather, speeding in poor weather or speeding excessively are the ones who should be getting tickets. Going 100km/hr in a posted 80km/hr with plenty of room infront and behind and perfectly dry pavement on a stretch of straight road is not unsafe. Going 60km/h in a posted 80km/h is unsafe and I've witnessed some near high speed collisions from someone traveling at such a reduced speed. If you cannot drive the speedlimit, you are uncomfortable with your driving abilities and you should not be on the road. This obviously doesn't include farm vihicles with flashing lights or signs or any other type of vihicle that is displaying a reduced speed warning.

My $0.02! why should we slow traffic down more? theres allready way to many people driving below the speed limits.
