What kind of teacher review site is this, everything negative that is 'mentioned' or 'complained about' gets removed? so essentially it becomes a teachers marketing website? lol
This story sounds exactly like what rogers is / has been doing over the last 2 months! (aprox.) Rogers is Canada's largest ISP, providing high speed cable internet access.
I searched the site, I was unable to find anything related to maximum downloads, etc... its gotta be a breach of contract, and I am aware they can "change the contract at any time" but they have to tell us the changes or at a minimum make them available at request / on the web site.
All I use my internet for is school work, multiplayer games, linux upgrades/downloads, and access to my free cd's (that I MUST download if I wish to receive from my college). If I spend enough time at home in a month, that traffic is allways about 10gigs down, and usually 10gigs up. Occasionally I break 25gigs down, but not usually.
Now I don't call that trying hard, and why should I have to limit my usage when I'm paying $50 a month for unlimited usage. I'm not paying $29.99 for dialup and $25.00 for another phone line anymore. I want the service I'm paying for, whether I'm using 5gigs this month, or 50gigs the next month. Simple as that.
My $0.02, btw Rogers has been sending out alot of these for any user that exceeds 30gigs a month.
Lets break that down.
You download a full set of debian install cd's ( I think its still around 8 cd's ), now you download several sample movies (opengl) for school, transfer emails, play games, read webpages, and transfer pictures to and from with some friends. Those cd's alone are going to cost you.... 21% of your monthly usage. Now lets say you need to download cd's for your part-time job (like I've done in the past)... another 8 cd's by month's end, and you've basically used up 50% of that 30gigs on legitiment, important, necessary downloads. Add up all the other stuff, throw in a few downloads a day of source code from the office for various projects and smack! you've just passed 30gigs.
My friend got one of these letters and 80% of his traffic was on downloading cd's for work, and other various things. His work even pays for his cable, but they're paying for unlimited cable so he can allways access the network at fast speeds all the time, why should he be punished for using a service he is paying for?
First of all Quake2 and Quake3 will run great on those machines. Aswell Counter Strike will also run just dandy. Another nice one to checkout (this one is free) is Enemy Territory a nice game built on a modified Q3 engine if my mind serves me correctly. Also this game is a wicked fun game as long as you have at least 3 people per teams, some maps may be to big for a small game, but there are some small maps that would work great with anything over 3 players per team:)
I've been a member for a long time, and the content seems to be degenerating into a groupthink zealot factory with its own set of dogmas and censors.
Truer words haven't been spoken. Every slightest rant (no matter how small or insignificant the speaker is) against (insert holy technology here) is put on the front page for all to read and publically decry, but then every move by (insert evil entity here) is also posted so we can all rehash the same arguments again and again and complain that (far superior technology) is not number one.
Anyone know of a more balanced news site? I'm getting tired of reading about how Open Source will change the world every day and why I should convert my manager.
Sure take yourself over to CNN . Thats quality, balanced news.:)
Thank God, that someone has seen the light and banned this genetic monsters. I think it's wrong to genetically alter any living being since it is not our place to decide what a species should or shouldn't do.
My serious opinion.
I'm not very religious, but I have ethics and beliefs that I follow. Now why don't we have the right? this is after all Plant Earth, humantiy is the dominant speicies!
Religion is a poor excuse for anything, I think its the cause of more harm in the world then good. Look at all the wars now.. whats the underlying cause?.
Actually besides SCO's over-all trashing of linux I would have to say the stories about Debian Server and Gentoo's One Server are good news. Its shows that security measures work, and that being honest works too. If every time a companies Windows 200# server box was broken into we would have plenty of stories every single day. I think one reason we don't see that from big companies is alot don't disclose it, and the other half don't even know their systems have been comprimised.
So in Outlook Express I have to click on an email to delete it, and emails auto open when clicked on. Hmm.. I'm guessing since the attachment is run automatically (thx Microsoft) I would say I don't have much choice but to get infected or mass-select emails just to delete this one safly. Hope I don't miss click and click on some spam like this!
Actually it could kill you. For example having to deal with increasing spam and the stress involved with that as well as the stress from trying to block the spam by updating/changing spam filters on a weekly or daily basis could kill you. The fact that stress is probably one of the most comon reasons for say an early heart attack then I think its safe to say that by daily stress brought on by email after email that spam can kill. I think if I visited a spammer I wouldn't harm him the first time, I would just make it very clear that people won't tollerate this privacy invasion. After all my e-mail box is MY email-box.. its not his or anyone elses to flood. So if said spam continued I might get a few (10-20) people or a few hundred people and all go pay said individual a visit. Whether we actually hurt said invidual would be redundant as the fear it would instill him and the chaos it would cause when police tried to breakup the large group.. it would be vaguly obvious that spammers are criminals and to this spammer he may then consider another line of work.
I recommend friends and family to Superior Computers, just your local computer store (London, Ontario), with excellent service. Why pay some big coporation that doesn't help you with things like this when you can goto the local store have it fixed infront of you in 30minutes and pay a small but worthwhile fee until you learn how to do it yourself from watching:)
lets assume everyone of its users sends out around 25 emails sometime on monday within 10minutes to their friends/family/co-workers. If they suspend all the accounts, what kind of hell are they setting up for themselves?? yikes.
Not a troll here. My honest opinion. Ok someone allready said in this article that "doing the time because they did the crime" this then makes their rehabilitation not possible. Honestly if you look at some of the penalties for sexual crimes, there frankly PATHETIC. Most of these people should never be released from prison let alone be allowed to live in a neighbour hood where every single house hold has at least 1 child. I think the police have to make sure that no1 is running around harrassing these people, but on that same note.. if you rape a woman, child or even a man, you don't have the right to hide that from all the neighbours. They have a right to know, just as you have a right to be dragged back into jail when you re-convict. Don't get me wrong, people make mistakes and some people are able to go on with their lives without doing/commiting the same acts again. However I can't seem to find the exact number here but I believe its somewhere around 96% of all child molesters re-convict. Perhaps I'm off a bit, but it really makes you wonder if a) the system works b) they should be locked up for good c) jail time is too little, they need treatment and life long seclusion from the world??
I sent my request to one of the manufactures that sell their product at the local computer store here. Send yours today. Lets see if they violate the GPL or not.:o
Okay let me just iron out this issue. I will be forced to pay more for my internet access because they are going to assume I'm downloading illegal/copyrighted material? Thats idiotic, everyone knows assumptions are the mother of all fuckups. I download on average maybe 1-5songs a year. Usually they're songs from the collection of old cds I have boxed up in my closet which I failed to unpack after moving here three years ago. If my internet fee's go up even $1 for this crap, you can expect me to go buy a few 200+gig drivers, and download, download, download. What garbage, I allready have to pay royalties when I buy cd's and burn knoppix, or debian or anything personal for that matter. I wonder if Rogers' (Canada's largest ISP) new limit of aprox. 30gigs a month has anything to do with pressure from groups like this? Considering if you call Rogers they will not give you an exact number just say 'I guess about 30gigs' pretty pathetic if you ask me.
Your mistaking google with some kind of MPAA, RIAA, SCO or micrsoft type character. I think its clear google is a SEARCH engine, bot a marketing machine. They would have done that along time ago. There just providing fair/right search results. Just because some company embeds the word SEX 500times into all there pages doesn't give them a right to complain when google filters for this.
Your right, I mean the virus obviously didn't start email/tranfering data to an offsite system or collect and store data in itself. I mean its rediculous to think that since the virus controls the computer system it could somehow get all that information.
The level of infiltration here is nothing. Its vastly less penetration than, say, someone who finds your lost card and tries it in a machine. At least then, they have bypassed one level of account security. A virus like this bypasses zero levels of account security.
But, hey, don't let me stop your mindless Microsoft bashing...
Your so right, full control, access to all data, man, nothing was compremised here. EH?
I can't say one of my friends or people I know support or agree with any form of human/animal slavery. Now with that said, wtf is wrong with using a word? Thats like saying Anti-Rape site is bad because it uses the word rape. How old are we now?
We all know the posibility of having 100% secure systems is improbable if not impossible. Clearly the linux community as a whole strives toward this, and I think having a 'break' in like this just shows how the community has allready setup safe checks and has a quality security system. The break-in was detected by the sounds of it right away, and they have allready verified the packages and will I'm sure be running a double check. They've announced it to the community and I for one am not worried about a trojan of any kind. If this was another OS that was closed source. The checks are far standard I believe to these security checks. The OS developers may not even know that the system has been compromised... I never feel safe using Windows Update, and yet I type apt-get update; apt-get upgrade whenever I feel like it. This quick response, release of information and verification of packages just re-affirms my trust in the linux community.
Its offtopic, theres no justification for it. Not everyone has time to read 600comments per article, unless its informative,funny,etc.. then its not on my list. If someone else posts an Offtopic thread, replying Offtopic is still OFFTOPIC lol!
I do see a problem, the next thing you know all large corporations new projects will take on the name(s) of new small companies names/projects that are trying to compete with the giants.
How would you feel if you spent 2 years developing ProductX123 and then Microsoft released the a new product in DIRECT compition with yours called ProductX123, when you have allready been using the name for over a year prior but because of your small reach and small advertising budget they blow you away and when people here ProductX123 they don't even know there's another project/product called that.
I've used Fedora on my home system and I thik it's pretty slick. It's definately a step up from RedHat 8 or 9. Did you read a review on slashddot to base your opinion? Try it for yourself, then decide. Doesn't Fedora allow you to roll out your own up2date repository, so as long as you can build your own RPMs and put them in there, you could have all your desktops update to the same software without having to rely on RedHat's very short product life cycle to keep support for your OS. Basically Fedora makes it more Your OS then RedHat ever did. This is especially attractive to the network admins who are running many linux desktops and want to roll out their own packages. I got to say that I love it.
Apparently you didn't RTFA, because were not evaluating the redhat Fedora project. Get a clue, and who the hell mod that Informative???

I bet the boys in the whitehouse are smiling from ear to ear, having soo many problems recently in iraq. Especially there public image.
lol
uhm, that was sarcasm!!! (refering to my comment)
