  1. $30 for a DVD on Networks and Studios Against PVRs · · Score: 1
I'd pay $30 for a DVD with a few episodes of any of the following:
    • Sifl & Olly
    • Mr. Show
    • 24
    • Son of the Beach
    • Police Squad!
    • Battlestar Galactica

  2. A lot of you are missing the picture on The Napsterization of TV · · Score: 1

Modern society has moved beyond the "pay talentless celebrities enormous amounts of money" phase. I'm sure that a large percentage of Slashdotters are amateur artists. Im sure that some of them are pretty good. But we all have day jobs.

The peer to peer revolution just means that Lars from Metallica will have to learn a marketable skill and get a real fucking job! He can still make music (or they can still make movies/TV shows/whatever), but now they have to make a contribution to society like the rest of us!

I think this is what youre looking for. It might be available here.

Forgotten Reals Dual Jewel . has all the old SSI gold box games if you like Pool of Radiance and all those games.

A lot of other old-school RPGs are available from abandonware sites. Anyone have info on how to get a collection of the old Dragonlance SSI games? I think there was a CD collection published but I could never get a hold of it. Also, anyone have info on Cluebooks? I'd love to have a run through some of these games but I dont have the time to figure them out! I'd be willing to trade scans...

  6. Legitimate reason to rip CDs on Universal Music Prepares for Copy-Protection Complaints · · Score: 2, Informative

I just thought I would explain this simply in case anyone needs to use it as a rebuttal.

I rip every CD that I own because I listen to them on my computer, back them up as MP3s, and store the original in a safe place. While the original disc might get stolen if someone breaks into my house, I doubt that anyone will steal a stack of burned CDs.

Also, I only use copied CDS in my car. My car was stolen a few months ago and while the car was covered by my insurance, my 200+ CD collection was not, and that loss was much more painful than that of the car.

The differences between SPAMMERS and door-to-door salesman:
    • I can tell a salesman to FUCK OFF!
    • I can punch a salesman in the face
    • I can not answer the door
    • I can come to the door holding a butcher knife
because of these differences, door-to-door salesman are usually nice, courteous people.

Dont buy anything from companies who send you junk mail! EVER! When you get junk mail, call the number on it, and tell them that. Here's the way I see it: if a company is wasting valuable money on advertisments that lose them customers, I can find another company.

By this logic the governement needs to outlaw driving, because a lot of people die in automobile accidents. As you said, the government must enfore your right to life. Also, the governement should outlaw knives, because people can be killed with knives.

  12. Missouri SPAM Legislation on Crazy Stats on Spam · · Score: 1

I live in Missouri which apparently has pretty good SPAM legislation - they define SPAM as any commercial or bulk email that doesnt include removal options (either an 800 number or a human-monitored email address!). I'm working on a system to cut down on my SPAM by using email aliases such as slashdot.dbc001@mydomain.com . If I start getting too much SPAM from one alias, just remove it.

I'm still getting SPAM from a domain that I registered 3 years ago, and it expired more than a year ago. I like the ones that say "I saw your website" - even though I no longer have one.

Anyway has anyone had any legal experience with SPAM in Missouri? I'd like to start sending subpoenas to these bastards just to cut into their profit margin and damage their real-world reputation! I've read all the recent Slashdot posts about suing Spammers, but I'm wondering if anyone has any personal experience?

I registered a virtual domain in 1998, and it expired in the summer of 2000. 15. Visuals! on Sci Fi Gives Green Light To "Children of Dune" · · Score: 1

The new mini-series was incredibly ugly! While there were a lot of pretty colors, I think most people would agree that the books dont evoke images with pretty colors. Also, there was absolutely no style to the miniseries. The look they achieved was "incoherent, silly, sci-fi cliche". I hope they will put more money into visuals & fx.

Also, the acting was pathetic. Especially compared to the Lynch movie. But the fact that the miniseries was still enjoyable, even with shite acting and visuals, speaks volumes about the quality of the original story.
