You sir, are a man with fine taste!
You've just listed my 2 favorite series in the animated and non-animated categories (i had never heard of regenesis but i'm going to give it a shot now that you've mentionned it)
Pm me on the slashdot messenging thingie or email me : gozulin at gmail dot com) maybe we can make each other discover other shows we'd both like.
First of all, where is the proof of concept??? I've been loking that the website and I see no sample that I can download using this "awesome swarmstreaming technology". What the hell is up with that? I launched the simulation and the java thingie is downloading at 7 k/s.....can you say underwhelmed?
Second, there is a lot of boasting , marketspeak and references to patents, business and whatnot. We're far, far away from GPL territory here. At least bittorrent is opensource.
The infamous 100% cpu usage bug. It has been present at least since 0.9 and occurs frequently and seemingly at random though usually it's when it's "loading" a page. It gets stuck and usually, closing the tab is not enough and i have to restart the browser.
Don't get me wrong, I love my firefox but it's annoying as hell to constantly find out that the reason my computer has been running so slow for the past 5 minutes or the reason this game i launched is giving me 10 fps is because firefox did it again (and again, and again...like the duracell rabbit)
I'm not the only one complaining about this and I 'm still waiting for a fix. (amd64 3200+, 1 gb ram)
Bullshit. My first pc came with a pirate, preinstalled copy of windows 95 . This was in Morocco, a third world country, back in 1996. They did honor their warranty.
Maybe next you'll say that I was lucky that the store owner was a decent guy. No. The same stores that pirate windows are the small independant stores because the big chains have too much exposure to be able to pull this off. It just so happens that those same small stores are a lot more reliant on word of mouth to get business so they have a vested interest in keeping their clients happy.
Of course, if you were just trolling, then you win.
I don't know who at microsoft thought of this but once you get over the initial shock, this makes sense.
The people who already have a pirate version of Windows that came pre-installed in their pc have no reason to buy a legitimate copy ; therefore, giving them one for free does not represent a loss for microsoft. They'll spend the same money they spend on manufacturing an SP2 update cd which anyone can order for free.
And I imagine quite a few people will turn on their "shady" local pc stores if it means getting something for nothing. Even if the something is only an imagined peace of mind. Microsoft can in turn sue those stores for tidy amounts of money. I suspect they'll make enough of it to pay for the cds, the publicizing and the lawyer fees.
Of course, any profits from these lawsuits would be too small to be of interest to Microsoft. However, once enough stores are sued, not only will that ensure most of them will start paying microsoft for legitimate copies of winXP, but it will also ensure that many other stores will fall in line because they fear some of their customers will report them.
Divide and conquer : The oldest trick in the world
And while I do not harbor any affection for Microsoft because of their condemnable business practices, I have take my hat off to the guy who thought of this.
Thanks for the correction, so it'll cost between $500,000 and $100,000 to replace them (assuming they sell the old ones and get a good bulk discount). Yep, oblivion it is alright...
the real cost for a customer is a bit higher than $5 and hour. You need to factor in the price of drinks/food that you'll consume while you're there. (they talk about this in the article) and possibly some marginal transportation costs. a total of $7 dollars an hour is probably a better estimate.
Video games sales in 2003 exceeded $7 billion, according to the Entertainment Software Association-double the amount sold in 1996. There were 239 million games sold, $5.8 billion in console games and $1.2 billion in PC games.
1.2 out of 7 is about 17% (less than 20%). Therefore, The pc game market represents less than 20% of the Overall game market.
Arcades are dead and PC Baangs (it's the korean name for those cybercafes where you can play games onLAN/online) are nowhere near as popular as arcades were back in the day.
Now I can see how these warehouses with their alienware pcs and nice screens (most of them are "only" 73 inches) would appeal to the same crowd that plays FPS and Strategy games and goes to LAN parties but that crowd is very very small compared to the overall gamer's market. Heck, the whole PC game market represents less than 20% so you can imagine the actual percentage of people who are fond of those games.
The idea just doesn't seem to have enough appeal to snowball into the next big trend. I know it doesn't appeal to me. For the cost of a handful of gaming sessions, I can buy a new $200 graphic card and play the same games on a respectable 20" monitor (ok, so I already own that) for as long as I want, in the comfort of my home.
This is not to say his isn't a valid business plan. The center can be profitable if the location is good and the marketing is done right. But that's only in the short term. Once the newness evaporates and those alienware rigs aren't so hot anymore (replacing 300 alienware rigs will cost you a cool $100,000) , I predict a steady decline into oblivion.
I don't know about stable but firefox has a nasty habit of going crazy and eating 100% of the cpu indefinitely. Its been there since at least 0.9 whic is the version I started with.
The guy on that website is an idiot. He basically pieced together a ridiculous conspiracy theory out of nothing then went on to delete a DELUGE of comments from people pointing out his mistake (and you can be sure they were not flattering..) and in his cowardice, disabled further comments.
I would say that I am sad and disappointed that a story like this got posted on/. but I'm a regular so I'm used to it.
Parent is right. You will not see a crack/warez version of the game before authentification. It's just not possible. In fact, the retail discs basically contain the same data as the preload, and that's been around forever.
It's been what? 20 years now that we've been using CDs and their cousins. I wonder when we'll make the jump to a new medium and what that medium will be.
And what happened to FDs? they were supposed to be the next big thing (tm).
I have postulated some time ago that 10/10 Gbps is the magic number for home users. Once everyone has that, we can all chill and enjoy it for a century or so. Until then, we will keep needing more and more speed.
We'll see if I'm right or not in 20-30 years. I don't think we'll see these kind of speeds until then.
While I agree with the general gist of what you said, the example you picked is unfortunate. The pirate version of CS:S is playable online without a CD key. Heck, it doesn't even use steam.

If you read this, you probably have been reading my posting history. I am flattered.

At least not for me. I got the patch and I don't notice any improvement. The stuttering is still there (amd64 3200+ , 1gb ram, 9700pro).
Word to the wise: press releases != the truth

They want to use our bandwidth, slap DRM on it and expect us to pay $1/song ? I can see it now!
"ALL THE HASSLE^H^H^H^H^H FEATURES OF P2P CAN NOW BE YOURS FOR ONLY $.99 A SONG!"*
*DRM may apply.

Mod parent up!
Valve keeps screwing up time and time again and they want to be viewed as victims?
I remember them lying and misleading about the september 30th release date which they knew would be impossible since at least july of that year.
I remember them extorting licenses from cybercafes who BOUGHT LEGIT copies of CS and who made the game popular in the first place.
I remember them requiring people who wanted to play on a LAN to have each steam client connect to the internet.
And now, they require you to authenticate the retail game online before you can play it offline.
Poor poor Valve indeed.
And before you answer, yes i'm voting with my wallet and not buying the game. And yes I'll bitch and bash Valve all I please.
And yeah, VU is evil too But Valve takes the Palm.
Xbox next will have a bluRay drive? How do you figure that out? Everything leaked or made public about Xbox next points to the contrary...
HALELUYAH! Metal Gear forever!

This is bad french. It should read: "J'ai joué a Halo 2 pendant deux semaines et j'ai appris à parler francais aussi!
Translation: I've been playing halo 2 for two weeks and I learned friench too!
How is parent funny? How often do moderators smoke crack? I think we're all asking ourselves these questions.
