The store I work at takes debit cards and while I don't go out of my way to check out peoples' PINs, I've definitely noticed somebody who has picked that PIN at least once. Another one I remember is somebody who picked 4444. Actually, now that I think about it, it may have even been a 6 digit PIN that was all fours. I mean, I guess it doesn't really matter what your PIN is, but I just can't imagine somebody deciding to make it all the same digit.

This is exactly right. Yeah maybe $50 isn't so much for a couple of books, but it's just one more impediment to people learning Ruby/RoR. One of the reasons PHP has gotten so big is because it's got good, comprehensive documentation both for the language and most of it's add-ons (PEAR, PECL, Smarty).

Thus, there are more incapable drivers dying than capable ones, ultimately resulting in a better ratio of capable to incapable drivers. Plus it reduces the total number of drivers on the road, making driving even safer. Right?

Well, there are a couple reasons. It's common for entrepeneurs to get bored with a business once it's established. Having an idea is exciting and realizing that idea is exciting (and satisfying) but once you've got a successful business running off that idea, the novelty and excitement of the idea is gone. This is not something that's unique to the world of tech startups either, you find this in all sorts of small businesses. Once things get to a certain point in a business, their founders will often either sell the business or employ somebody else to run their business for them and then they go work on a new business idea.

More particular to tech startups though, it's often more lucrative to sell your startup. Suppose you have someone willing to buy your startup for $25M. Sure, if you keep going on your own, you *might* get lucky and you *might* earn more in a few years, but that's a big risk.

Not all PINs in the US are 4 digits, some banks have switched to 6 digit PINs (a few to 8 even) some banks give you the option of a 4 or 6 digit PIN as well.

As for liability, the issue isn't as clearcut as it used to be, most banks nowadays limit liability themselves and even if they don't, if they've issued you a Visa or Mastercard debit card (as almost all are nowadays) you are IIRC entitled to the same fraud protection as a regular Visa/MC cardholder.
