Pop-up ads get in the way, one banner ad doesn't really. I prefer Opera and the only time I even have to care about the ad is when I use my brother's laptop which is only 1024x768. Even then though, it doesn't get in the way really, most of the space the ad takes up would mostly be vacant otherwise anyways. So yeah, if I ran my computer at 800x600 I would probably use firefox.

Also, if it does bother you and you don't want to buy Opera, there are easy ways to get rid of them.

How is this much more than an art project? I mean, there's no practical reason for a city shaped like a question mark and a plethora of reasons why it's impractical. And even the artistic rationale for its symbolism is really bullshit: "It represents the invisible actual, and metaphorically, the unknown perfect design that will stand there in 2250 AD. Obviously, this is not that working design but only a notion of it. Only the question remains."

A few of these designs are more successful artistically, but most of them still fail practically. How about this, I'd like to form a city in the shape of a giant toilet to symbolize that society is going down the crapper.

This has to be one of the worst descriptions ever. Firstly because it's one big, incomprehensible run-on sentence, but more importantly because it doesn't even give a summary of the challenge, despite going into some detail about the variety results.

Both the original author and Hemos deserve to be sacked. I mean, come on, I know they're not going to catch every mistake, but they're called editors for a reason and if they're not going to even bother to fix a horrible description like this then they're just not doing their job.

Well, whatever color the screen is can't be used in the scene and blue is quite common for clothing, whereas green is much less common, especially the very bright green used for green screens.

There are tons of stories about people with conflicting wardrobes and green screens. My favorite is of a weather lady with heavy blue eyeshadow -- when she blinked you could see rought through her eyes.

I would bet that a lot of the digital effects used in this film were rendered and perhaps even designed with Linux. If they were done with Windows they would have used a blue screen.

Actually, I saw that as well, but it was the other way around. The interviewer said they filmed it on a blue screen and she corrected him saying that they were on a green screen. Although the technology began with blue screens, green screens are far more prevalent today.

IIRC there was an article about which single tape is best for taping your broken black thick-rimmed glasses, patching your pocket protector in the event of a rip and holding your sliderule together just in case you were to accidentally trip (as many of us klutzy nerds often do) and break it. Nobody questioned that one.

Although I don't see why you need to know what tape is best for repairing your sliderule as I would just use the spare one I carry.

More than the actually movie, what you reminded me of was the episode of the extremely short-lived Clerks animated cartoon. There is an episode in which Randal beats a videogame in which you build pyramids with the end goal of becoming the pharoah. When he wins The Last Starfighter is mentioned and he gets all excited, but then he is reminded that the game he won at was about building pyramids and he becomes a slave forced to haul large slabs of stone.

Ah, so it does, but in rereading that section of the GPL it seems to me that if a company were to release a program under the GPL with code covered by a patent (that is, not being in line with the GPL) then they wouldn't necessarily have to allow everyone to use their patent infringing code, they could just decide that their code is no longer covered by the GPL. This is where it could become a grey area, although not with as horrible as the implications for the users that I imagined before.

  21. Re:Possible Simple Explanation on MS-Sun Agreement Leaves Opening For OO.org Suits · · Score: 2, Interesting

While that is true, and is one of the more sensible explanations provided so far on here, it still doesn't quite answer all the questions. Wouldn't Microsoft want to avoid all Open source projects from Sun disregarding their patents?

More importantly though, this path of thinking brings up some disturbing ideas in my head about ways GPLed projects could be controlled. Example: Suppose a company decides to start a GPL/BSD/etc. licensed project and this company has many software patents, and/or a cross-licensing agreement with another company that has a number of software patents. Since this project was started and is maintained by the company, it can obviously use their patents, but if somebody else decided they wanted to fork this GPLed code, they would not be allowed to without removing the patent infringing code, correct? Even if they are, it's somewhat of a legal grey area, is it not?
