The funny thing is this PCWorld article that touts PS2 security over XBox and GameCube. The ironic part is when Sony announces their "partnership" with companies such as "America Online" and "RealNetworks." RealNetworks... now THAT's a company I trust with my personal information!
For the same reason a friend of mine ran Windows through VMWare under Linux... "cause it runs faster and more reliably through a virtual machine!"
Wasn't Michael Robertson trying to pull a fast one with that LindowsOS thing that seemed to come and go? Yeah, you're uh... Windows programs will run, uh, better under emulation. Or was it more about "now you have choice in what OS you use!" Hmm. Well, if you own any Windows programs to run, most likely you own Windows itself. If you're looking to install Linux, I don't think Lindows is what you are looking for. But I digress.
I'd just like to remind the Linux users out there to download the Windows ports of OpenOffice and the GIMP, and run them under WINE.
New nVidia video card (cause you have to throw out your ATI Radeon et cetera): $150
Somehow this just doesn't add up. This makes as much sense to me as buying a copy of Windows 2000 Advanced Server so you can "run Apache on it." Just use the right tool for the right job!
Would you rather play Nintendo games through an emulator, or that NES attached to the TV in the corner?
Honestly, I don't see why this is front page material. I programmed Lego Mindstorms in C using legOS in one of my intro to engineering classes. The difference was that instead of the sole requirement of "being really cool," ours actually had to perform a specific task; i.e., autonomously maneuver through a 10x10 ft maze while keeping accurate track of distance and perform various tasks. We were graded on our ability to complete the task, and the amount of time required to complete the task, not solely "was it cool or not," although that was a part of it. Oh yeah, and the code. =)
The big headache was that you had to compensate for the shitty quality control in the Lego components whose tolerances are so absurdly wide that it's just ridiculous. Also, you have to work within the restrictions of a certain number Lego parts, with little to no modification. It's more of a challenge than "see how many legos and custom sensors you can buy/make."
My point is, however, that if everyone who has worked with Mindstorms submitted their stories and pictures to Slashdot, we'd need a dedicated section called http://diaries-of-college-students-who-worked-with -mindstorms.slashdot.org. We'd also have 25 stories a day posted to that section. Nothing new here that is worth seeing.
He DOES realize that US Postal Service mailboxes (yes, that includes aluminum house mailboxes you buy at the Home Depot) are actually property of the US Postal Service. Yep, even though you physically own it. That's why it's a bad idea to go around putting Dran-O bombs in unsuspecting neighbors' mailboxes. Oh did I say that? =)
I doubt that. You can pick up an APC Back-UPS 500 for $100 USD if you look hard enough. Places like Staples often have them on clearance.
Plus, APC adds filtering components and surge protection. I think there is a guarantee on the components hooked to it too. I had a Cisco router hooked to an APC Back-UPS once during a bad thunderstorm. People lost equipment all over the place during that storm, and I lost the UPS... it was DEAD. But it saved the router, which was more important!
Also, you get serial port communication for logging too. Sometimes it's nice to know that, well, damn, why DID the power go out at 4:30 AM?
Thanks but no thanks... I'll be sticking with my trusty APC. =) But this is a cool idea nonetheless.
English -> German: Helfen Sie, ich sich verfing meinen Penis in einer Mischmaschine. German -> English: Help, I got caught my Penis in a mixing machine.
English -> Spanish: Ayude, yo cogió mi pene en un mezclador. Spanish -> English: I help, took my penis in a mixer.
English -> Italian: Aiuti, io ha interferito il mio penis in un miscelatore. Italian -> English: Aids, I have interfered with mine penis in a mixer.
English -> Portugese: Ajude, mim travou meu penis em um blender. Portugese -> English: It helps, me stopped my penis in blender.
Compounding it doesn't help either:
English -> German: Helfen Sie, ich sich verfing meinen Penis in einer Mischmaschine. German -> French: aidez moi verfing mes Penis dans un appareil de mélange. French -> Spanish: me ayúde me verfing mi Penis en un aparato de mezcla. Spanish -> English: me ayúde me verfing my Penis in a mixture apparatus.
Sure you could send her off with a lockpick, a glass bong, a computer with all the latest whizbangs, aq kick ass stereo, a soldering iron etc etc.... but what fun is that? I often lookj back a tthose years and the shit we used to improvise to hget a job done and really apreciate the shit I have accumulated over the years...
I'd have to add that bongs (and paraphenailia) and soldering irons (or any other type of "exposed heating element" type-of-thing) usually fall under the "prohibited" list.
On the other hand, he shouldn't forget to send her condoms. LOTS and LOTS of CONDOMS! (Remember, guys don't usually have one, do they?)
Neither ACPI nor APM are supported either which means that it will not work properly on laptops and many desktop class new machines. The range of supported hardware is also very small compared to what you get working with BSD or Linux.
I think this is because Sun is like Apple in a way... they release Solaris only with SPARC in mind. They don't have to give a shit about support on Wintel/Lintel boxes cause that's not their main target audience. I mean, why waste their time if 90% of Solaris installations are on Sun hardware?
I would have expected the scam to be run by some guy named Tony living in New Jersey that had set up a psuedo-corporation in Nigeria.
I'd keep a lookout for newly-opening sanitation companies opening in Nigeria. Also be suspicious of the 4 stocky Italian guys meeting outside the pork store.
Solaris is very powerful. Judging from the link they are only releasing Sol 8 for x86 and Sol 9 for Sparc.
The downside is that is ships with CDE by default, which is an eyesore (it can be changed, provided you have root access). I wonder if Sol 9 is shipping with CDE or Gnome?
BTW, I don't think Sun has a chance of being "Slashdotted" any time soon. They sit on one of the biggest pipes in the country. And just think of the purple server boxes their web servers sit on... (drool...)
Anyone who CARES about development version kernels probably monitors kernel.org on a more-than-regular basis!!! No one else cares! Is this some sort of scheme to fool people into installing development kernels to make themselves feel 'cool'?? Please explain, thanks.
Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't AOL-Time Warner coming out with their own competition to Passport? Would they be subject to the same regulations?

...oh wait...no FreeBSD? I thought they said no free LSD.
You know how the saying goes... there were two good things that came out of Berkeley. =)
Actually no, I've got an nVidia card... I was just making a point. But I'm pretty sure all the ATI owners are pretty pissed.

A TCP/IP enabled RCX? Now that's cool!

Heh, don't worry, I brought mine, just kept it out of the RA's sight ;-)
Naw, that never works. Here's an example:

Remember, even back then, IE was *just* a web browser, and, for the most part, still is.
Till Mozilla can sweep the floor, wash the car, or suck me off for free, it will still be *just* a web browser to me.
Yeah, but unlike Bill Gates, Steffi Graf lets you play the game Lesbian Or German Lady?
I wonder if Slackware has more users than Netscape!?

I heard the Xbox has a proprietary DVD player that spins backwards.

I guess I won't mention the obvious Bill-Gates-is-Satan-reverse-spinning-phonograph-r

You mean like Alice from Dilbert?
You left out the neglence suit against Smith & Wesson (was it?) for the guy that committed suicide by shooting himself...

It was Patty and Selma!
