You don't post "videos". You post the race data. Then the data is downloaded and the simulator plays the data in the game-engine. So they play back at whatever game resolution you are playing the game in. Please do some research before you post. It would also help if you actually played the FREE DEMO before commenting, lest you reveal an agenda that differs from real appreciation or honest criticism. You don't like PS3? Fine, play your system, and be happy, I heartily support whatever choice you made as right for you. Allow that some purchasers of the PS3 feel the same; you don't see me pissing all over Geometry Wars, now, do you? BTW, it's really cool to see the line some 13-year-old from Wisconsin squeezed out of that little Cappucino.

I have a 480p TV, as does almost everyone still, and the PS3 looks amazing. The PS3 is the first device to even do HD that I've ever owned. I had been waiting for such a device to enter the mudstorm that is the emergence of HD to spark my own entry. I'm going to skip the entire 780x range and buy a 1080p TV, which now costs about 2x the cost of the PS3. It's a non-issue for me. I am sorry that 780p/i folks are not going to see the absolute best from this, but, seriously, it's not as if they get a completely blank screen with no play options, and early adopters always get screwed, welcome to technology. Contrary to the early cries from this (questionably) injured group, Sony is trying to give them some options to improve their situation. But, complainers do best when they complain, and nothing is funner to them, it seems, than complaining about active responses to their complaints. It's not 100% the first time; I'm sorry, but that is pretty much the Japanese way. Incremental improvement is a cultural fetish bordering on a compulsion for manufacturers over there, so I'd expect this to only get better as we go forward. It's always about balancing tradeoffs when you attempt to combine 2 high end pieces of tech: if you care more about longevity and color range, you would go LCD display; if you care more about color intensity and motion response, you go plasma. Neither decision is wrong for what you desire, and both products will converge into each other's space as we go forward. If upscaling is absolutely more important to you than whether the device at least basically functions, I'd say you do have a right to complain, but you do still have a functioning product that delivers on its real promise: it still looks astoundingly better than the previous version no matter what resolution. To the ones complaining simultaneously about this and the price, upscaling was left out as a hardware decision, and would have likely made the machine more expensive. So, even if this hadn't been an issue, there would still be focus on the price, no matter how much money Sony is losing. Welcome to the cake that no one will be allowed to eat, unless it's to say the cake needs more frosting.

  7. Re:What if you hate square-enix? on Final Fantasy XII Pushes Envelopes · · Score: 0

If you liked KH, you should feel very comfortable with FFXII.

    1. Yes, boss battles involve strategy. There are powers in the game that only unlock based on your MP bar's full status, so you have to anticipate a boss fight to enter it fully ready. During the fight, you have opportunities to chain your powers together, but since this is based on reaction time and luck, you may have to prepare back up tactics. There aren't any auto-win setups that I've found on par with chain+ultima+mimic+(repeat) that you could do in FFVII, but that can be seen as a good thing.

    2. Depends on how engrossed you get in "regain the throne" style storylines. If you liked the storyline in Final Fantasy Tactics, you will have no problem getting into this one, as it's very similar in both characters and events. Barring that, "engrossing" is such a subjective term that reasonable folks will disagree, often violently, and they will all be correct.

    3. Story events are linear, but your character is pretty free to beef up and explore in between triggered events. They really knocked out much of the annoying travel time between already unlocked and visited areas, and it's also very possible to explore yourself right into an area that's not meant for your level at the time. There are also plenty of mini-quests and activities to engage you while you are grinding to prepare for the next raft of story events, so I'd give them very good marks on at least disguising the more linear aspects of the story. The FF series is famous for giving a linear impression with subtle differences that lead to different endings, while still making it seem that everything was meant to happen the way you played it, this time. So, yes, it's mostly linear, but with plenty of slack and self-directed activities in between the choke points.

And, back to the original topic, it looks fantastic, as good as GT4 as far as elimiating most of the jaggies. The FMV could benefit from progressive scan, as interpolation shows up during heavy panning, but this is more of an annoyance than a heartbreaker. If this is the best that the PS2 will ever do, it's pretty darned good and deserves to only be usurped by an entire new generation of hardware.

P.S. I'm also a David Lynch fan, and I approve of the not-too-convoluted storyline of FFXII. ;)

I didn't follow the action during the PS2 / Gamecube / Xbox launch period, so tell me if any of these things were different:
So you are unqualified to make an accurate assesment, yet you'll still fling poo in unknown drections, while asserting no bad intent. Fine.

    * Was the PS2 released an entire year after one of the others?
Yes, it was supposedly the "too little, too late" response to the Sega Dreamcast. DC came out 15 months before PS2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Dreamcast

    * Was it last to release in Europe/Australia by 3+ months?
Not quite, it trailed by about a month, but what is the point of this question? No one can buy a Vend in the EU for the forseeable future, so I guess Microsoft should just go die in a corner? We all know that XBox 360 had the first worldwide launch, but we also know that it wasn't the smoothest thing ever. So half-point to MS for doing that, but it doesn't mean everyone that follows has to do the same to be counted as a valid contender.

    * Did the PS2 face a manufacturing shortage, while the others did not during the same period?
Yes. But it was the only system ramping up at the time, and both the GameCube and Dreamcast were subject to tight supplies when they were released. DC couldn't fill all the preorders, just as an example. And manf issues do not neccesarily hurt eventual sales. First release iPod, anyone?

    * Was the PS2 priced over twice as much as one of the others?
Yes. Because DC issued a price cut right when the PS2 was launched, you could purchase a DC for exactly 1/2 the retail cost of the PS2.

    Any more questions?
