Wow, a web page run by a non-microsoft group hosted by someone other then microsoft is running a web server other then microsofts. Will wonders never cease?
Lets go around in greasy t-shirts and ten years worth on unkeept beard growth (the official uniform of the FSF) kicking down the doors of people who violate the GPL and shout "Freeze scumbags, this is the FSF! Hand over your source code into the public domain and no one gets hurt!".
An RJ45 plug is thicker then the notebook. Since it has built in WiFi I dont realy think the loss of a 10/100 port is that much of an isse. Whats more the USB->Ethernet adaptors are not much thinker then the ethernet cable itself.

Indeed the "real" BT dont like the client because you can limit the upload speed which goes against the ideals of bittorrents. But bottom line is that I dont want to be chewing up 100% up my upstream bandwidth to get a new episode of the Anime I'm watching.
(sigh) I knew no one would get this as soon as I posted it. Speakeasy has no band width usage caps. In fact they encourage you not only to run servers but also to host public WiFi spots. You see 1.5Mb * 60(seconds) * 60(min) * 24(hours) = 12,960,000,000 bits per day. In otherwords I'm free to use my full bandwidth all the time. Granted I pay a lot more for my connection then most people.
Why not just tell Bittorrent to stop using as much bandwidth? There are many torrent clients out there that let you controll the amount of upload and download traffic you allow. I use BT++ myself and have had no issues at all.
Not software. Software is designed, not manufactured. You can manufacture things over seas but the designing needs to be done closer to home where you have quality controll over the proccess.
Bottom line is that out sourceing IT and other so called "knoledge workers" to over seas sites not only kills the job market, it also kills all future inovation since there's no point in going to school to learn engineering anymore. In addition it hurts the quality of the products being made. Even if the out sourcing site is another US company, outsorcing lowers quality and productivity in exchange for short term cost reduction. Period.
"So you take a shit computer (P100), run an outdated version of Red Hat on it.... and it works? Not only does it work, but apparently the only gripe is it *could go tits up at any moment*.. not that it has."
No, I did no such thing. My predicesor set the system up. It has MANY problems and needs constant hand holding to get it through the day.
"Instead, you decide that getting a budget to buy a huge amount of hardware and client licenses and other related costs is the right way because it cost money? I'm really confused. Sounds to me that Linux was the best tool for the job -- lower TCO, reliable and does the job."
No, I decided to biuld a system thats stable and works. If we where a UNIX shop I would keep Linux or use Solaris. But where not, so I'll go with Windows. Since we are a Windows shop and each desktop has its own CAL I dont need a lot of licenses on the server, I just need a copy of the OS. This will cost around 200$ more then if I got a new system with Linux and will reduce the administrative costs becuase we wont have one system on the network that is an "exception" to how everything else is run.

So your saying that having to do a bunch more stuff to coutnerfit the chips isn't making it harder?
Stick a Linux distro CD in a drive and boot. What do you see? If you answered "English words" then you win.

You mean that photo that shows a red/brown sky with a jepg color banding artifact around the sun?
Across the street from Comdex at Adultdex. I only wish I was kidding.
Just think how long it'll take to clean when you sneeze.
Your right, my bad. Still dont think its much of an issue. Most if not all the Sony slim notebooks have been sans ethernet.
Nope. Most have a 1 from colum A, 2 from colum B setup by your freindly Tiwanese mfg.

Zack was a lego maniac. Then they treated him with Thorzazine. Now all he does is watch TV all day.
Its easy to spend 32 mullion dollars on advertising when you print money for a living.
Just show the treasury you disaprove by not using their products. If enough people do this they'll get the message and change their policies.
Hey now, just because you cant afford your own "undisclosed location" dont be player hating our VP.
I'll be sure to thank her for sticking Quick Time onto all the HP desktops when I'm burning her in effigy tonight.
Ok, I'll take a look. I've had no problems with BT++ but I'm also not a loyal user.

According to speakeasy.net the most bandwidth I'm allowed to use on my 1.5 megabit connection is 12,960,000,000 bits per day. Seems fair to me.

"What other impetus is there?"
To better serve your HP masters of course.
