  1. Why we still use QWERTY.. on Strange New Keyboards and Mice · · Score: 2, Insightful

QWERTY appeared when people were typing so fast on a typewriter that the "arms" would stick together. The letters were placed so that there was a maximum of movement (=time) possible (thus eliminating two "hammers" from hitting at the same time).

So basically, we are stuck with the most inneficient technique available. I think that keyboards should use the same interface but letters should be moved to different places. A few common letters like A and E should be available on "both sides" in order to speed up typing.

Why is the current input method perfect? Well everyone is already familliar with it. Most products can easily use it (try a vertical KBD on a PDA ou ATM??)

Maybe instead of having 3 longs lows, we should have 4 narrower lines of characters (not including #'s and control keys). While typing this article, I found out that my fingers were mostly moving horizontaly, not vertically. Having a "cube" of characters instead of a triangle would probably improve typing.

I say: why re-invent the wheel? Just align it :)

  2. They're great if you shop wisely on Are Rebates Scandalous? · · Score: 1

I've never had any issues with rebates.

Rule #1: Make a photocopy otherwise in 3 months, you won't remember where you bought the thing (even less the number to call to inquire!)

Rule #2: Don't buy anything that has a good rebate if you don't need it. For example, you can find a free phone at xyz but the question is: Do you need it? If not, why worry.

Rule #3: Look for a bargain. Sometimes, rebates are given to end of life merchandise, meaning someting new is coming up and they need to get rid of this model. Nothing bad with this, but look at other alternatives (OEM hard disk for example, versus retail box usually has a BIG difference).
I've always used rebated on useful stuff. For example you can always get cheap/free CDR's every other month or so.
Basically, shop wise! Don't get caught in the "boy it's cheap" syndrome if you don't need a "zyx" or whatever...

Don't forget that a rebate is always on the seller's advantage. They profit from interests and then write off this amount for tax purposes.
So basically, it's a win-win situation. Even if you get your rebate, they get to lower their taxes.

These days, you can buy blanks, printers, mag-stripe writers at most stores. Easily hackable. Too easy in fact.
