I don't understand why everyone says to use VPNs when most decent database servers offer encrypted connections already.
One assumes there are cases where you may not be able to configure the application utilising the database to use such an encrypted connection. The application may be closed source, or its configuration may not be under your control. In such cases, a VPN is viable alternative.
Yes - a zero day exploit implies there is no patch yet available. Also, there have been security vulnerabilities in VMs that allow you to affect the host in the past, which means it is also possible in the future.
At the least, you should have very restricted access to the internal network for the host the VM resides on, preferably limited to specific IPs and ports.
Its for situations like these that a few years ago I wrote pagefetch [sourceforge.net], a perl script that would retrieve an html page with its associated images, tar and gzip them all up, and email them back to the original requestor.

Im in Australia, and when I visit the website, I can't see any message from the DOJ - the website looks exactly how I'd expect it to look (not having been there before, however). In fact, the forum statistics say there are 154 members, and 461 guests currently online...

Actually, the speed of an electrical signal varies widely depending on the molecular structure of the material, so saying Electrical signals travel at around 1/10 the speed of light isn't true.

Not on my Thinkpad laptop you can't. With a BIOS and harddisk password enabled, and no way to reset those passwords, you're not booting off anything.
Was the hard disk running with DMA enabled? If it was using PIO that would explain the large amounts of CPU for heavy I/O.
Fail2Ban is also a great tool for banning repeated attacks against SSH, apache, etc. Its what I use.
