Even if they do ask, they depend on someone else to provide "the one true answer" - because they don't have the tools to arrive at a useful answer on their own.
Which provides for a compliant, easily manipulable population. Remove the capacity to handle mathematics and even basic statistics, and you have people who literally can be told what to think.
So from that can we reasonably predict an increasing influence of organized religion in the coming years?
'cause in my experience the only group that likes a compliant non-questioning "flock" is organized religion.
Now with smartphones people aren't quite so retarded.
Ummm...
We found one of the office girls plugged in her little Apple Air-Port Express to the LAN under her desk, so she could use the WLAN on her iPhone at her desk.
When was confronted, she couldn't comprehend why it was a bad thing she was doing.
Fortunately the policy (which we thoughtfully presented her with a paper copy of) clearly states that allowing strangers onto the company LAN can be a firing offense. That she understood (if not why)

Buy more standardized equipment, and you'll be amazed at how much easier life gets.
You assume I have any choice in what corporate purchasing dumps on us. We are big enough that the right hand and the left hand aren't well acquainted. Add in power struggles between IT and the purchasing group.
It seems that each bulk purchase (3-4 times a year) they go with a different vendor. Or a different "best available" model form the same vendor.
from where I am sitting, I can see HP, Panasonic, Dell, and IBM laptops. And if I take a short walk, I can see different vintages of each brand.
At work we have a fleet of assorted laptops, and regularly have to go on a scrounge to find a power brick for someone who is visiting from another location who either left their brick at the other office/hotel/home/car and is running low on power
Or someone is issued a new laptop, and it only comes with one brick (which is semi-permanently tied to the docking station) and they need another for portable use. Why can't we use the one from their old laptop? Even if it's the same manufacturer, the voltage or connector don't match. WTF?
If we need a second power brick, we don't reward the OEM with extra money. It's 3rd party for that (and usually cheaper too)
That seems to be a windows only thing.
I am a bit surprised there are so few mouse gesture responses, though. It's one of my first add-ons when I do a clean Firefox install.
A third candidate will never get a significant percentage of teh vote until people stop thinking of voting as a binary choice.
Sure the third party won't get elected, but if they draw a noticeable amount of votes *this time* more people will be willing to not vote for either of the 2 "same old" options in the future.
Unless people just stop voting all together, out of sheer disgust.
Just one point: don't confuse bad governance with government. The reason ACTA is being passed is because the public at large is failing to do anything meaningful about it.
It's hard to get people motivated about something that is being actively hidden from them.
Citizen: "ACTA is bad. Please Mr. Politician, stop it"
Politician: "which specific parts of ACTA are you talking about. Plese quote me chapter and verse"
Citizen: "But you won't let me see it. You won't even acknowledge it exists"
Politician: "So you have no idea what you're talking about.. Good day sir. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out"
In fact, better targeted may mean *less* intrusive, as you would theoretically see higher conversion rates, and so less need to blast people in the face in order to get their attention.
Or, in their ever-increasing need for more More MORE profits, they will keep increasing the amount of advertising that is piled on us until we revolt violently, or become quivering masses of apathy.
Seriously, what modern business thinks beyond increasing the next quarters profits? They will keep being increasingly mercenary until they implode under their own greed.
Asking why there are no "billion-dollar" open source companies is kind of stupid.
That's kinda my reaction too.
Why does success need to only be defined as "more profitier every quarter... to infinity".
Small and medium sized businesses are, and always have been, the core of every economy. They are where the creativity is. That's where most jobs are. They are more agile and able to react.
Those few billion dollar companies are almost always bureaucratic, bloated, predatory bullies, who ultimately cause more damage to the economic environment then any good they ever did. (see "big energy", "big pharma", "too big to fail", etc)
No more stupid, inefficient, buggy, paper ballots. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, maybe not in my lifetime though..
As opposed to those efficient, slick, shiny electronic ballots that our neighbours to the south use?
No thanks, I'll stick to the proven method that takes much more effort to screw with.
The big battery packs on the Tesla need active cooling so they might be okay in the north.
Until you need to start moving again.
Most vehicles up north have block heaters which require them to be plugged in when the engine isn't running. It would not be too surprising to find a battery heater is also required.
Ummm, they're doing it in the summer.
From alaska.com:
Fairbanks' average high is 70 degrees in June, 72 degrees in July and 66 degrees in August.
I'll have to try mine again.
When I tried to plug my iPhone in under Ubuntu 9.10, it caused a kernel panic. I suspected that may have been intentional on Apple's part.

Unless you're attempting to illustrate that rural communities exist, other countries exist, etc.
I'm ready to stipulate to all of that, because none of which has anything to do with the topic at all.
That was actually the point I was making. But it was the side point in my original post.
My original main point was
FYI, you can buy 'Game Time Cards' with cash
At the moment you can.
If they are killing anonymity, I don't expect that over time they will leave an anonymous option to do anything.
Recommended System Requirements
Win XP SP3 / Vista / Windows 7
I wonder if it will run under WINE?
And not everyone lives a convenient distance from a "big-box store in the United States"
Anyone that doesn't live near where they would have access to broadband
Please note the part about "in the United States"

Yes, because trolls would never stoop to using fake "real" names.
Well, they'll find it very difficult to do that unless they figure out a way to spoof the same name on their credit card.

And yet everyone gives out their real name on Facebook when they have the choice to give a fake one.
Not everyone.
not that my "A. Guy" profile is used for much more than looking at other people's public stuff, but still...

But corporations have a right to make profits!!! </sarcasm>
Even if you were being genuine, no one should have any expectation to make a profit from me specifically.

We think of them as central, as in the phrase "who do they think they are, the center of the fucking universe?!?"

Oh, sure. Today i don't have mod points.
I will take a copy of your letter, however.
"There is no such thing as an absolute truth."
Is the above statement absolutely true?
Probably.

I think you should write a note to ask the author. If he doesn't respond with an objection, you can take that as permission.
Yeah, I know. Now that I'm up to date, I'll have to try it.
