  1. As a 3rd Year CS Student... on Programmers and the "Big Picture"? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I concur that there is a lot of this kind of niavete out there, but on the other hand, there are always the few that will go above and beyond. While my schooling tends to focus on a more abstract approach with emphasis on OOP, I have also started working on embedded systems in my own time.

It seems apparent enough to me, that any passionate CS student will not be satisfied with a mystically based understanding of computer architecture; and will in turn educate themself. I propose then, that any kind of 'black-box' mentality is more a reflection of the students' drive then their education.

  2. It tastes like burning! on AMD Introduces the Athlon XP 2200+ · · Score: 1

This is a specifically charged issue for me, becuase I just shelled out 108 bucks for a new 1700+ becuase my old one died a hideous smoking death. I also bought a Swiftech heatsink(the one with that inch thick chunk of copper and the 3 inch high 80mm fan).

It is a little annoying that I have to pay more than a 2 thirds the price of the processor itself, just to keep it cool enough. My old one kept overheating and locking up with the stock heatsink, so I replaced it with an aluminum CoolerMaster, which didnt fix the problem; so I went to underclock it to cool her down, but it hacked it's last laugh and sent up a putrifying white plume of opaque electrical depression.

I suggest that everyone who owns a tbird over 900mhz or a palimino over 1200+ buy a $60+ heatsink...with a nice copper base. And the fan isn't loud enough until you cant get to sleep in the next room.

this was my reaction at first also, but realize that the point they are making is that these are the current TOP OF THE LINE for both companies, and the AMD's current best, cant beat Intel's current best, which is more bestest or somthing.

I similarly goto Regal in Portland...I got so bloody sick of Haley Isenberg(sp?) that I sent a letter a week to Regal complaining...I dont think it was the redundancy or the rhetoric that got to me, it is that Haley Isenberg looks exactly like the girl from the Exorcist, and the voice over is just too much. I was very gratified when they caved(apparently I wasnt the only one writing letters)...however they replaced her with brittany spears which would be fine I suppose...if they muted it....

elimination of stupid buzz words wold be wonderful...
    no more:

    -Advanced
    -Bible
    -Easy
-Super Bible(actually a good series, stupid name though)
    -Unleashed
    -Exposed
    -Teach Yourself
    -A practical guide
    -Black Book

none of these tell me anything about the actual content, what ends up happening, it I flip to the introduction and read,(as was said) "...is beyond the scope of this book...". So I get frusterated, and walk over to the O'Reilly Section. Also(someone already said this, but it is a great idea): A series on indexed language specific algorithoms. Also, the index is the most important part of a book for me...if the "S" section isnt at least 3 pages, I move on.

This is such a sweet idea...and definatly well priced...I dont know if it is totally usefull...why would I want to run gcc on a PS2, when I could run it on a 1.6ghz AMD xp server running debain woody(should be out by the time PS2 linux is)?

Since I dont have a PS2, this would almost justify getting one...but...

...if only I could get this functionality on a system with good games...hmmm...XBox???...oh...I almost forgot who that was made by. *sigh*
