    So anyone think that if Google or Apple were the top competitors Gates would acknowledge that and give a boost to the underdogs? It's more beneficial for MS to play the underdog itself and acknowledge IBM as the top competitor.

    This makes sense, Microsoft is trying to move towards standards compliance since they restarted IE development. Why should they invest energy in the Mac platform, when a (more) standards compliant browser like Safari not only exists, but is supported by Apple. Of course, they won't be able to provide Mac users with the custom crap that runs only on IE, but that's just a tiny nudge to see if they'll move to Windows. I personally don't see this as a bad thing. It will encourage developers to code to standards as they'll no longer have a supported version of IE to fall back on Macs.

    Well, the point is, we've seen "it just works" turn out not to work, so who's to say that "it mostly works" is any more of a truthful statement? I'd rather have them say here it is, it's free, try it out, and take the opinion of an impartial third party.

    It doesn't work for loops though. The conditional breaking may help, but that means doing some thinking every time this situation comes up. Not the end of the world, but it's such a simple thing that I would hope the perl debugger could implement.

    Whenever I use the perl debugger, I find that I have to hit enter (after pressing n, or s) over and over, is there a way to tell it to do something x number of times, like n 5?

    What is the deal with firefox and plugins?? Every time a new version comes out all the plugins break. Either make the plugin interface stable and stop blocking them, or bring the most important ones under the foundation and stop dicking around. Firefox has many annoyances that are fixed by extensions because developers won't fix them (saying there are extensions for that).

    Yeah you could do that with Wikipedia too when it had 100 new entried a month, but once you reach 100 a second I'd like to see how he'd cope.

    P.S. There is a Wiktionary in Swahili right here: http://sw.wiktionary.org/ It hasn't attracted too many contributors, what makes this guy think he can do better?

    I use Firefox which has a built in pop-up blocker, I rarely see pop-up ads, but recently they've started to show up more often. The arms race is still going on. I just upgraded to FF 1.5RC3 because I hope it does a better job of blocking this new kind of pop-ups. At this point the advertisers know that users despise these tactics, but some are still willing to keep up with the war. So I do my part and use Flashblock and Adblock all other ads on sight. If the sites go under due to lack of funds, so be it; I'm tired of their crap.

    Do you seriously believe that the kid would get much socially out of school anyway? I was 18 and I didn't get much out of it. What's someone with that kind of intellect going to get out of parties and tailgating? You go to school to get an education and that's it.

    I seriously doubt an 8 yr old would have the knowledge to be a freshman no matter what they say, but I wouldn't worry about social implications.

    What I'm guessing is that this kid has a tremendous ability to understand complex concepts, I just don't think he's had the time to go through all those concepts in detail. Shouldn't he prove string theory first before he goes on to build flying cars on top of it? Maybe I'm wrong though. We sure do need some geniuses nowadays so more power to him.

    Does that computer come with a built in satellite modem and lifetime free internet access? Because if it doesn't I don't see how it solves the problem.

    So Windows keeps a backup of every file on the system, at any point of time?? That must waste some space. I wonder what would happen if the worm made it past the last restore point, would it restore the worm as well?
