So anyone think that if Google or Apple were the top competitors Gates would acknowledge that and give a boost to the underdogs? It's more beneficial for MS to play the underdog itself and acknowledge IBM as the top competitor.
Obviously the GP was referring to the license of the published material? Will it be CC, GFDL, some other free license, or copyrighted with all rights reserved?
This makes sense, Microsoft is trying to move towards standards compliance since they restarted IE development. Why should they invest energy in the Mac platform, when a (more) standards compliant browser like Safari not only exists, but is supported by Apple. Of course, they won't be able to provide Mac users with the custom crap that runs only on IE, but that's just a tiny nudge to see if they'll move to Windows.
I personally don't see this as a bad thing. It will encourage developers to code to standards as they'll no longer have a supported version of IE to fall back on Macs.

That's really useful. Anyone gotten this to work?
That's really useful.
Well, the point is, we've seen "it just works" turn out not to work, so who's to say that "it mostly works" is any more of a truthful statement? I'd rather have them say here it is, it's free, try it out, and take the opinion of an impartial third party.
Microsoft is also dabbling in widget's, or as they call them gadgets. There is a long video interview about the "gadgets" and their version of Dashboard.
It doesn't work for loops though. The conditional breaking may help, but that means doing some thinking every time this situation comes up. Not the end of the world, but it's such a simple thing that I would hope the perl debugger could implement.
Whenever I use the perl debugger, I find that I have to hit enter (after pressing n, or s) over and over, is there a way to tell it to do something x number of times, like n 5?
No shit, some weird site asks for your credentials without even explaining anything? You've gotta built some credibility and amass enough money to be worried about getting sued, before you'll become trusted.
The guy did this as a prank, and then he left it there for months?? Either he's extremely forgetful, or he doesn't know when to end a prank, or this wasn't a prank at all and he's just covering his ass.
It doesn't seem all that stern to me. I'd hate to see what's considered very very soft. I was half expecting to see Rice threatening to fuckiing bury that EU.
What is the deal with firefox and plugins?? Every time a new version comes out all the plugins break. Either make the plugin interface stable and stop blocking them, or bring the most important ones under the foundation and stop dicking around. Firefox has many annoyances that are fixed by extensions because developers won't fix them (saying there are extensions for that).
"Benjamin compares his project to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia drafted largely by a band of worldwide literati. He emphasizes, however, that, unlike Wikipedia, he vets every entry for accuracy, sometimes within minutes, before he posts them."
Yeah you could do that with Wikipedia too when it had 100 new entried a month, but once you reach 100 a second I'd like to see how he'd cope.
P.S. There is a Wiktionary in Swahili right here: http://sw.wiktionary.org/ It hasn't attracted too many contributors, what makes this guy think he can do better?
I use Firefox which has a built in pop-up blocker, I rarely see pop-up ads, but recently they've started to show up more often. The arms race is still going on. I just upgraded to FF 1.5RC3 because I hope it does a better job of blocking this new kind of pop-ups. At this point the advertisers know that users despise these tactics, but some are still willing to keep up with the war. So I do my part and use Flashblock and Adblock all other ads on sight. If the sites go under due to lack of funds, so be it; I'm tired of their crap.
Do you seriously believe that the kid would get much socially out of school anyway? I was 18 and I didn't get much out of it. What's someone with that kind of intellect going to get out of parties and tailgating? You go to school to get an education and that's it.
I seriously doubt an 8 yr old would have the knowledge to be a freshman no matter what they say, but I wouldn't worry about social implications.
What I'm guessing is that this kid has a tremendous ability to understand complex concepts, I just don't think he's had the time to go through all those concepts in detail. Shouldn't he prove string theory first before he goes on to build flying cars on top of it? Maybe I'm wrong though. We sure do need some geniuses nowadays so more power to him.

Does that computer come with a built in satellite modem and lifetime free internet access? Because if it doesn't I don't see how it solves the problem.
So Windows keeps a backup of every file on the system, at any point of time?? That must waste some space. I wonder what would happen if the worm made it past the last restore point, would it restore the worm as well?
Suggestions for inclusion are being taken here.

I know we're being baited, but "We don't want to invade people's privacy too much, so we deliberately keep things very coarse grained."
What the hell??
Why doesn't he just say we're not going to trample your rights too much. It's the same thing.

Yes using GPG keys would solve everything, and I bet that would be just as successful as Nupedia.

Seriously, "Lectured local computer user groups about Linux"? Is a LUG session really worth putting on your resume?
Same way as I did, with mplayer

This was published in July. Is the story a dupe?

Nope, I stay away from Windows.
