The difference between the PS2's DVD drive and the PS3's Blu-Ray drive is that when the PS2 was released DVD players had been on the market for a full 3 years.
Another difference is that when the PS2 came out, there were *tons* of multi-disc PS1 games. FFVIII was 3 CDs. The CD format was already insufficient when the PS2 came out.
I have never seen a PS2 game that required 2 DVDs... let alone 3.
That doesn't mean that home grown coders won't ever betray trust either
True, but homegrown coders can be held accountable. Try convincing the indian government to hand over one of its citizens so we can prosecute him for espionage.
Yes, but the field is localized entirely within your microwave.. that's why instant coffee in a microwave tastes even worse than regular instant coffee, it's actually thousands of years old.
Are there any experts out there who can enlighten me? I'm rather curious.
You would never use RE to write a windows clone.. it is, indeed, just too large. Reverse engineering is better used to solve specific tasks.
You could use reverse engineering to find details on things in windows, like codecs, file formats, protocols, etc.
For example, I used reverse engineering to discover the iTMS AES key. It took about an hour to find and step through the relevant code to discover out how it is generated (it's not stored in the file, iTunes calculates it on the fly by md5summing several strings, and Apple uses an intentionally broken md5 algorithm).
For protocols, it's usually easier to just run tcpflow instead of stepping through the executable, and for file formats there's always the "make a change, save, diff, repeat" method.
First, there is absolutely no enforcement of such typing, which means that if the "type" changes in the future, you have documentation in your code that is linked to the code itself and much more difficult to change
The best example of this is the proliferation of "lp" prefixes scattered throughout windows. The long pointer hasn't existed since windows 3.1
they didn't explicitly blame Microsoft, just expressed annoyance
Why? Windows machines do not become infected with viruses on their own (worms maybe, but I'd expect slashdot to understand the difference). Someone was using a QA machine for non-work related purposes.. probably downloading pirated software or viewing porn sites.
Let's see, a bunch of guys puts together a database of known spammers
That's your problem right there. They put together a database of *reported* spammers. Our local newspaper was erroneously put on a blacklist for spamming. In order to be removed they had to donate $50 to an approved charity. The *only* charity on the list? That's right, spamhaus's legal defense fund.
I don't use blacklists because the people who run them are extortionists.
When I installed, it asked me what timezone I was in and configured it appropriately.
Ubuntu 6.06 no longer has an install CD. Instead it's a live CD with an installer program put on your desktop after you boot off the CD. So he changed his computer time while in live CD, but when he installed, he chose a timezone and it automatically applied the change.
I admit, the ubuntu installer/liveCD has some kinks to work out, but otherwise it's absolutely amazing. I can browse the web *while* installing ubuntu on the same machine!
The appearance of the "Web 2.0" jargon is a strong candidate for being the moment when the Internet jumped the shark.
What I find ironic is that slashdot, a site dedicated to all things technological, has become the homebase for a group of people who seem to be against change of any kind.
They want to turn back the clock to the days when the web was basically the same as gopher.
It's a very utilitarian outlook. Just black text on a gray background without any interactivity at all.
The new prices on the ipods are actually pretty good i think, only 250 bucks for an 30gig ipod video
Yes, but it's only $150 for a 20gig Zen Photo Sleek. Which is large enough for most people. I hate that Apple keeps dropping their lowest model in order to keep the price above $250. In 3 months, the 30 gig ipod will be history.
His wont, but there's nothing special about the MachO file format that prevents viruses from hooking themselves onto the front of an application.
Let me put it this way, every single application inside your Applications folder can be modified by the primary user without any password dialogs or anything.
It is very possible to write a virus, attach to some shareware program, and when you ran it, it would infect every OSX application you have installed. Then everytime you ran iTunes, for example, it could do a lot of damage.
It normally takes me a week to get back into the swing of things but I'm perfectly comfortable in 90+ weather
When it's 90 degrees outside, it is much hotter inside. Our AC broke in July and it took a few days to get it repaired. Inside temp was at least 10 degrees hotter than outside temp. We ended up buying a portable swamp cooler to prevent our cats from dying. The low was 89 degrees the high was 108.
Move to arizona before you tell me to turn off my AC.
That's what kills me about the ipod. Your choices are "too small" or "way too large". Just as the prices look like they might drop, Apple increases the size by 20 gigs and drops the lowend model completely.
Walmart sells a 20GB Creative Zen for $160. That's amazing. Apple doesn't even sell a model for the "medium sized" $150-$200 market.
We could if it *were* a hoax. Since it's reported by decent folk all over the place, I don't think we can.
Decent folk who don't understand memory management at all.
Let me put it this way:
Say you have 1 gig of ram. Say firefox is taking up "an unbelievable 500 megs!". If you wrote a program that allocated 600 megs of ram, you'd see firefox's memory usage shrink by 100 megs.
That's because firefox uses a memory cache. The ram used by the page you visited 3 pages ago is "free" but firefox has tagged it for caching. That means as long as the OS doesn't take it back, firefox will still have access to it.
Another difference is that when the PS2 came out, there were *tons* of multi-disc PS1 games. FFVIII was 3 CDs. The CD format was already insufficient when the PS2 came out.

Better than the unreadable fonts in Dead Rising for anyone who has a SDTV. Face it, SDTV will rule for the next 10 years..
No they wont. I'm sorry, but take any game in the world, and I can tell the difference between a movie and that game.
Resolution has nothing to do with poly count... and we have a ways to go before we hit the limitations of 480p.

Anyone know how to turn it off on firefox? I'm running firefox on ppc linux.. so I'm constantly getting harrassed about flash missing. Make it stop!
The best example of this is the proliferation of "lp" prefixes scattered throughout windows. The long pointer hasn't existed since windows 3.1
Last man hears phone, stupid autodialer.
Woman, without her, closet is spacious.
That's a little unweildy. How about:
Last man on Earth hears knock.

I just did exactly that in Ubuntu.

You learn something new every day.
It could've been flagged as inappropriate for the comments, not the video. Several of them are calling for the assassination of Clinton.
I'd be all for that... if anything, to stop PC vendors from adding all sorts of shit to the default image.

It's also $100 more expensive than the already overpriced PSP, which can do the same.. only better.
