    I'm running RH9 on an iOpener. /proc/cpuinfo tells me that it's a WinChip C6 180MHZ

    4 gig laptop harddrive
    32 megs of ram (shared with video card)

    But the worst part is that the keyboard that it came with doesn't have an Escape key.. which annoys me every time I use vim.

    I also find it's important to point out that the OS is extra!

    That's because this machine is targetted towards businesses. The businesses already have site licenses.. they don't need to buy the OS.

    Macworld unscientific test (dvd playing) put the g4 at 4 minutes longer battery than the mac book pro.

    Except that the G4 they tested against was used. Battery life changes over time.. testing a brand new laptop against a 1 year old laptop is useless.

    Motorola COULD NOT come up with a G5 (or better) that could power a notebook. They hit a wall with this processor. End of story.

    Yes, but if you remember, intel hit a wall with the P4. Was that end of story for intel?

    I'm not liking where this is headed. Now we've got Xgl, Aigl and whatever Luminocity used.

    Why couldn't they just standardize on Xgl? It works *today*. Aigl doesn't even support my nvidia card right now.

    t would still only be able to affect stuff in your isolated home directory (Which you DO backup.. right?). The system itself would remain stable.

    You're assuming that a worm's only goal is to delete everything it can and you'll notice immediately. How about a worm that ftps all your private files to a server? Would you notice?

    How about the fact that the default user in OSX can modify everything in Applications. iTunes could be replaced with a script that did something malicious, then ran iTunes.. would you notice?

    Every worm ever released on windows could be "written off" just as you have done this one.

    Maybe this is Gnome's problem. What are they doing putting any attention toward improving the terminal!

    They're not. Gnome Terminal is a good indicator of how fast their font rendering is now. Don't confuse the benchmark programs with the actual technology.

    They put attention towards font rendering.. gnome terminal can render anti-aliased fonts faster than an unanti-aliased xterm.

    With Ubuntu Dapper Drake I have finally been exposed to gnome-screensaver, which doesn't let you select which screensavers you wish the random selector to choose from, doesn't let you set options for the screensavers (because a screensaver with options, according to the developers, is broken), and won't give you a full-screen preview (because, according to the developers, being able to do so doesn't really solve any problem).

    Give me a break. "According to developers".. bullshit. You didn't ask them.

    Gnome-screensaver is a cutting edge alpha. The version number in Dapper Drake is literally 0.0.23 Zero point zero. There aren't any options because they just got the basics working. There haven't been any design decisions on how options will work.. to claim that developers rejected the adding of options is just lying.

    You can rendez vous for a meeting, but it's not the meeting itself. It's the showing up.

    xcompmgr has been deprecated. It's not being developed any further. According to FDO it's been replaced with Compiz.

    It doesn't provide for clarity, nor does it simplify, it just makes things "easier" for the guy that writes the original code.

    What? I'd argue that:

    $customer=new Customer();
    $customer->name="Bob";
    $customer->phone="555-1234";
    $customer->insert();

    is much more clear than
    $conn=mysql_connect("localhost","user","password") ;
    mysql_select_db("customers",$conn);
    mysql_query("insert into customers (name,phone) values ('Bob','555-1234')",$conn);
    mysql_close($conn);

    It's cleaner and easier to read.

    Do some research on user interfaces. In particular, read up on Fitts' Law.

    Fitts' Law only applies to really small resolutions. Today, that menubar at the top of the screen is *really* far away from the application it corresponds to.

    Perhaps you should use some UI research that was conducted more recently than 20 years ago. Putting the menubar at the top of the screen violates other UI rules about grouping common elements together.

    If 3/4 of he hardware out there RIGHT NOW lack OS X drivers for PPC, why would they magically have OS X drivers for Intel? So that means OS X won't be able to access your scanner, your TV tuner, your sound card, your mpeg accelerated video card, etc.

    I'll give you video card and sound card. But doesn't apple have this problem already? I can certainly add a TV tuner and a scanner to a PowerMac. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't.

    Apple *already* has this problem, and their solution is basically to say "tough shit".

    The whole "drivers" issue is rediculous on its face since the main things that need drivers are things you could add to an official intel mac.

    . The guys cracking OS X so it runs on generic PCs are just patching Apple's code to fool/circumvent the checks it does to make sure it's running on genuine Apple hardware.

    Since when is that illegal? I can't write software that modifies OSX? What about that program that hacks OSX to add virtual desktops?

    This is exactly why I choose to run linux.

    if the cell is server-worthy and kicks the ass of Athlon64, its damn well worth the price. I'm thinking along the lines of using it as a PC as well.

    The cell cpu isn't a general purpose cpu. The PS3 will suck as a general computer.

    Yes, yes. You've seen it all. Nothing new under the sun. Please. I thought the article was interesting because I have never worked, nor been inside, a warehousing plant.

    I work for a newspaper. Our press is a giant 2 story machine that is pretty much identical to every press in every city in the US. That doesn't prevent an endless parade of tours and kids that come to see it in action.

    You only lawfully enter into a license agreement with Apple, the terms of which require you to run Mac OS X on Apple hardware.


    If this were true, then Apple would be forced to abide by my state's Leasing Laws.

    Apple must provide free replacements for the actual media should it break or become damaged. Apple must provide support, and finally, Apple must provide me with a written contract stating the terms of the lease before I give them any money.

    Software companies want to have it both ways.. where you purchase software but lease a license.

    I have to re-buy all my lenses again. Does this make Nikon a monopoly?

    No because the lenses on their own are useless. They're an accessory, you can't use them without a camera.

    iTMS and the iPod are separate.. artificially tied together.
