    What I find unacceptable in Python is that whitespace (tabs) determine the logical flow.

    It also means you cannot take advantage of the auto-indenting feature of editors.

    If I need to go back and wrap a chunk of code in an "if" statement, I can put a { at the beginning and a } at the end and the editor will correct the indenting.

    Python will require me to go line by line and insert spaces or tabs.

    Actually, the ASUS boards out there are top of the line.

    Look at the K8VSE,
    Hypertransport (that's an 800mhz bus).

    Built in wifi
    2 SATA RAID
    gigabit ethernet
    2 firewire
    6 USB 2.0
    digital audio out

    All for $120.

    But even better than that, you can actually get an AMD64 in a notebook, unlike the G5.

    I'm curious if you've toyed with the touchpads on mac laptops. I know it sounds horribly biased, but I swear there is a difference between them, and I can't stand PC touchpads but love the touchpad on my powerbook.

    It's not the hardware. The touchpads on mac laptops are the same as the touchpads in PC laptops. They're all made by Synaptics, often the exact same models.

    Then again, the acceleration could be what you're seeing. There's a huge difference in the touchpad acceleration under PPC Linux than under OSX on the exact same laptop (linux acceleration is much faster, OSX is sluggish even when maxed).

    Perhaps Konqueror is better than other browsers, or perhaps the involvement of Apple means that Safari is better tested than Mozilla or Opera.

    No, the reason Safari doesn't crash is because it stops reloading the page! Even though there's a meta refresh tag at the top, safari ignores it after 3 refreshes.

    If you keep reloading the page by hand, safari will eventually crash.

    So a bug in safari actually prevents the bug checker from running :)

    Imagine the possibility to design/allocate different news on diferent section of a web page, with different links, and everybody will get an instant GoogleNews with fully customised content.

    You don't need to imagine it anymore. My.Yahoo does exactly this. Allowing you to put RSS feeds on your custom page.

    We're looking at doing this exact same thing on our own site.

    Almost anybody between the ages of 25 and 35 still has active muscle memory for blowing on an NES 8-bit cart, slamming it into the console, and then whacking the side in order to play Mario Bros. That's not because the 8-bit NES was an aerobic device--that's because the device and the design was a piece of shit.

    It's because of dirty contacts not because the design is a piece of shit. The design is amazing. I still have my original NES from 1987, it still works. Yes, I have to screw with a few cartridges sometimes but the thing still works.

    Just because there is some hardware issue with the Rio Karma thats causing lockups doesn't mean the design is bad, maybe its just a bad run of harddrives.

    Everyone I know who has an iPod mini is having battery problems.. (after a few months, the battery cannot charge over 10%). I don't immediately blame the design of the mini, odds are it's just a batch of bad batteries.

    Also, Altivec has 32 128-bit registers to only 8 128-bit registers for SSE/SSE2. I don't care what anyone says, trying to emulate 32 registers (when all you have is 8) in an SIMD engine is going to be a lot slower.

    AMD64 has 16 SSE2 registers, and 16 GPRs. Still not as many as Altivec and G5, but better than before.

    Sun has always been much more open than Microsoft. They are also allowing open-source implementations without fear of reprisal.

    I don't agree with that. I don't think Sun has been less open than Microsoft, but I think Sun has been about on par with Microsoft in terms of openness.

    GNU and Linux were pretty much created in response to Sun's Solaris.. not to Microsoft.

    However, Sun has changed its stance recently. They've started using opensource in Solaris, and of course there's talk of Solaris 10 being completely opensourced. But it hasn't always been that way.

    No.. OSX won't work with non-apple DVD burners. And with the new G5's you'll have trouble replacing them with Apple branded burners.

    Why? Poor design (oh, blasphemy!) We got a bunch of G5 towers, with the combo drives (that's CDRW/DVD readers). One person needed a DVD burner, so we took his DVD burner out of his old Dual G4, and put it in the G5. It works, but the poorly designed drive door (the one that slides down) doesn't work with anything other than the drive it came with. So he has a shiny new G5, with the drive door rigged so the drive door is always open.

    Excellence in design.. or something.

    Will someone explain to me the point of building a $3500 Windows-based gaming system when you can buy a console for 10% of the price and have better graphics, a far bigger screen, a better selection of games, and none of the problems associated with, well, Windows?

    I payed less than $300 to upgrade my computer to an AMD64 and FX5700, which lets me play Doom3 on highest detail and still max out the 60fps cap. I have far better graphics than any console.

    But I also own a gamecube. I say, why not do both? Gamecube for 3rd person platformers like Prince of Persia, etc.. PC for 1st person games that are better with a keyboard/mouse.

    You buy a game 50 bucks new, and in 10 years, it'll be worth 50 cents. That's just the way it is. People like me collect the shit because we like video games.


    Not always true though.. True for 99.99% of all video games, but some go for decent amounts of money. Chrono trigger is still pricy in used game stores (going for $60-$100)

    I picked up Gauntlet Dark Legacy for the gamecube for $15 brand new about 2 years ago. 6 months later the going rate was $60 used. It has died down a bit since, but I can easily sell this game for $30-$40.

    Jesus, why is this modded insightful? I used to live in a gated community. The $50 a month I payed to the homeowners association went to trash pickup and road upkeep.

    A gated community doesn't use your taxes to keep its roads up. Those roads are privately owned by the homeowners association (which is an incorporated business).

    Not the same.. a better analogy is Scottsdale residents are concerned people are driving around with infrared cameras that see through walls.

    If protecting against wardriving was as simple as closing your blinds, then it wouldn't be an issue.

    Most modern games are released for Mac OS X as well as Windows.

    That's not true at all.. you could say "some" modern games are released for OSX as well as Windows but not most.

    In fact, it's fair to say there are more games released for both consoles and PC than both PC and mac.

    With RSS feeds becoming more and more popular across a whole raft of different applications (including tasty new integration with Firefox), surely combining the two formats (Atom and RSS) would be beneficial, lest we end up with another VHS/Beta or DVD+/-RW/RAM situation..

    Why not just have the readers support both? Firefox supports both RSS and Atom feeds. Although there are technically 3 different RSS formats because of the non-backwards compatible changes they keep making.

    I hope they'll stick with RSS version 2.0 for a while.

    LMBENCH Process Creation (smaller is better)
    FORK: YDL: 352 OSX: 1402
    EXECL: YDL: 997 OSX: 3106
    SH: YDL: 3058 OSX: 6443

    LMBENCH Latency (smaller is better)
    PIPE: YDL: 18 OSX: 30
    TCP: YDL: 46 OSX: 76
    FILE: YDL: 128 OSX: 347

    LMBENCH Bandwidth (bigger is better)
    PIPE: YDL: 419 OSX: 216
    TCP: YDL: 176 OSX: 181
    FILE: YDL: 584 OSX: 417

    Basically, YDL3.0 out performs Panther in nearly every benchmark I've tried. Especially when it comes things used by servers. OSX makes a bad server because it's IO and latency is so hindered.

    Mac-On-Linux is fast enough to use for light work, however disk IO really suffers. You know that troll that talks about how it takes an hour to copy a file? He wouldn't be trolling if he were talking about Mac-on-Linux.

    When I have videogame neophytes (or even PS2/Gamecube owners who aren't familiar with the Xbox) over to play some games, they are usually blown away by Xbox Live. "These are REAL people?" they say over and over into the microphone..

    Just because you bring idiots over to your house doesn't mean anything. I'm a gamecube owner, but that doesn't mean I don't play Battlefield, Enemy Territory, and America's Army online on my computer.

    The best multiplayer games out there are FPSs, and FPSs suck on the console. That's why I'm not too worried about the gamecube not supporting online play.

    Plus there's too many 13 year old punks on xbox live. Maybe if all my friends had it, it'd be worth it, but as it is, none of my friends subscribe to xbox live.

    Remember, Nintendo was planning something a little like that in the (vaporware) N64 sequel to Earthbound/Mother, where the player could plant a seed in a location and come back later, when the passage of time detected from the machine's real-time clock would tell the game when it had grown to a point where it could be harvested for useful fruit.

    And nintendo did exactly that with Animal Crossing. You can plant an apple, after a few days it'll be a full size tree, after a few more it'll produce apples.

    Plus if you don't play in a while, your town will be overgrown with weeds and the residents of your town will wonder where the hell you've been.

    If you're looking for a silent system, try the VIA micro-itx formfactor with 1ghz cpu. Not only can you build a very quiet system, but you can build a really small one too. 17cmx17cm full-featured motherboard.


    I have an Epia-V for my arcade cabinet. It's 1ghz, it's nearly quiet (the 1ghz has a tiny fan that's similar to the fans found on those radeon 8500 cards), and the motherboard+cpu cost just $80.

    But the best part is that since it draws so little power you can use a fanless PSU. These things are small as well, they look like daughterboards and they mount directly to the motherboard.
