The meetings notes says they are "considering" changing the numbering. Until there's an official announcement saying that they are changing the numbering this shouldn't be taken as anything other than "yup, we discussed it".
From the wiki page:
"Version numbering
* considering 3.1 -> 3.5 to indicate increased scope
* will need to figure out how to update all our tools effectively (build, bugzilla, AMO, etc.) -- detailed plan coming this week
* beta 3 will still be shipped under 3.1 moniker
* labels existing increase in scope vs original 3.1 plan, not a willingness to further increase scope
* next step is to take it to dev-planning "
So yeah... it sounds like they are serious about changing the numbering but it looks like they need to finish crossing all the t's and dotting the i's first.
How many IT departments are insane enough to actually attempt to brute force a Windows XP->Windows 7 upgrade with Vista as an intermediary? Any Windows user who knows what they're doing knows that the best way to "upgrade" your Windows install is do a format with clean install. The fact that the article then goes on to suggest that in the "real world" you would then image the final result and push that out to clients.
... but from what I could tell when shopping for a new pair of drives back in December, the higher capactity 7200.11 drives have been plagued with numerous issues. Newegg had a really sweet deal on the 1TB model and the user reviews suggested there was either a firmware or manufacturing issue going on with them since the latest batch of drives were coming from China along with review sites reporting caching wasn't working totally right.
I went with the 500GB model since it had a much higher score among recent reviews. Both drives were manufactured in Taiwan and they have the ill-fated SD15 firmware. They've been running perfectly fine since I bought them but I'm waiting patiently for the revised firmware. This seems like a failure on QA's part to test all models that were affected. Ooops. Stuff like this happens (anyone remember the EVE Online guys releasing the patch that nukes a critical windows file?) and I'm glad they're at least owning up to the issue finally. Hopefully the next hard drive line won't have the same issues.
Not worried about data loss, I bought a 1TB external drive to act as backup. Plus the system is overdue for a Windows re-install;)
Without IE on the CD, how will I download my alternative browser of choice? 99% of the times I install Windows, the first thing I do (after patching) is hit getfirefox.com.
Or are they planning on forcing MS to package installers for Opera, Safari, Firefox, Flock, etc. on the CD? Couldn't this backfire on the alternatives since they're updated a lot more frequently than MS prints new OEM/Retail versions of Windows? Or will Billy Bob even notice that his version of Firefox is over a year out-of-date when he gets his shiny copy of Windows 7?
This would also put additional strain on OEM call centers when their users can't figure out how to work a non-IE browser. More training for staff = bigger operating budget. Sad but true.
There's very little competition in the retail channels for i7 boards. I think there's fewer than 10 boards listed on Newegg when I checked a few weeks ago. I expect this will change in the coming months, which should bring down the price a little bit.
Hopefully now we'll see which music store will reign supreme now that iTunes isn't handicapped with the DRM restriction while Amazon wasn't gimped by the RIAA.
What's Amazon planning on doing with this rate hike? If iTunes raises their rates and Amazon doesn't, iTunes loses big time since Amazon will have the cheaper and better product (for the most part).
Oh sure, so now they're not messing with just BitTorrent, they're messing with everything else? Awesome.
I'm not sure if this is related but I noticed yesterday my connection to Kingdom of Loathing timed out a few times and I know it wasn't a peak time for that game. Really trying not to put the tin foil hat on here.
Well they were hinting at this in the forums last week after they did the same for Starcraft. Sadly, there's no mention of doing this for Diablo II. They're also planning another balance patch for release at some point, which might add some features to Battle.net for the game as well.
This isn't exactly uncommon though. Epic Games usually disables the cd-check very early on in their patch cycle. I believe the DRM is mandated by publishers, while the developers seem to be more sympathetic to gamer's wants.
Waaaah. Just because you didn't have the forethought to jump into this first, the only option is to sue the pants off the competition? Why not make your own "official" version of Scrabble available on Facebook and let the damn market decide.
I notice they're not going after Yahoo! Games for Literati which is also a Scrabble knockoff. I imagine Yahoo! has more lawyers at it's disposal and a bigger bank account than whoever make Scrabulous.
Congrats as well Hasbro, I'm sure you just gave Scrabulous and that Boggle clone a good amount of free press:P
Yeah, Maxis/EA dropped the ball big time on things like that. Sad because it was a really good looking game and was a decent simulation, but the lack of post-release support really killed it for me. Then again, it's really hard to beat the old Simcity 2000.
I know I saw House M.D steadily increase in seeds over the course of the first two seasons, and I'm pretty certain the same thing happened with Heroes last season.
It's not too bad a benchmark, I mean, if something is popular people are gonna want it. So they should see increased viewership and piracy as something gets popular. Which is kinda "duh" when you think about it.

Sony executive inserts shoe into mouth. Story at 11?

You have got to be kidding me.
I'm just as surprised as you are, although this isn't news to me since I've been following this release for a while now.
The headline is fairly misleading.
I'm not worried. I have all that Left 4 Dead training to put to good use.
They've been saying this since Windows 7 was publicly announced. Sinofsky's team didn't do a Beta for Office 12 (or Office 2007 if you prefer) either.
Shouldn't the word "distribution" be somewhere in there?

I knew I had read this before. Thanks for digging that up.

Yay "free" markets?

This really looks like it's running on a special version of the SimCity 4 engine. Am I the only one who noticed this?
I'll probably end up getting this, I avoided Societies like the plague and if this is the true heir to the throne, I'll be quite pleased.
Isn't NBC the same network that gave us the wonders of that Geico derived Caveman sitcom?
As much as I enjoy Heroes and the bits of Law & Order (and it's various spinoffs) that I've seen, I can't believe their execs are this stupid.
$10.50 for an adult at the Lowe's in Boston Commons.
I forget what the matinee price is but I can't imagine it to be less than $6 or $7 at best.
WGA + Faltering economy maybe? If people can't afford groceries and gas, how can the MPAA expect them to afford a $10+ movie ticket?

Same here. I remember reading this in a book when I was still in grade school too.

One could argue that the Iraq invasion was done to bail us out of the small recession from '02-'03. Look where that's gotten us.

Good to know we're one step closer to Mr. Fusion. Next step, flux capacitors and getting the DeLorean's back on the street.
