  1. While it's not particularly well researched... on Computer Rebates Not As Sinister As You Think · · Score: 1

...I do agree with a lot of it. I have never had a rebate rejected - although all of the rebates I've done in recent memory have been from Circuit City. Maybe their rebate fulfillment centers are more on the ball? Anyway, my last rebate deal was a 120GB hard drive for $50 after two rebates. I got my pre-printed at the register rebate forms (and got copies, just in case), asked them to make a copy of the barcode for me (even two, no problem!) and went home and assembled all the paperwork - after I checked out the drive and made sure it was functional, of course! I mailed in both rebates (including my "junk" email address - the address I give where I don't really care if I get junk mail - on both the forms), and maybe a week later got an unexpected email from Seagate. Your rebate form has been received, and is processing! That was pretty exciting. I had an online tracking thing for Circuit City's rebate, too. I think they may have also sent me an e-mail, but I can't remember. Anyway, I was able to track both rebates, and both companies kept me up-to-date - when it was received, when it was being processed, when it was accepted, and when a check was mailed. Got them both, no problem - and much quicker than the stated 6-8 weeks; I think I had them both 3-5 weeks after I mailed stuff. And except for the emails and web tracking, this is not a new experience for me. Maybe I'm just extra-careful, but I have never had rebate issues. Having also worked in retail, I understand why they need proof of purchase, too - you would not believe the incredible scams people try to pull!! If you can't return the item without the barcode, and if the rebate requires the barcode - well, no double-dipping for you! So anyway, I think it's kind of nice to see a positive spin on rebates for once. To those who whine about "just take the price off at the register already!!" - would you rather just not see those items on sale? Or have less than 15% of the rebate savings taken off at the register instead? i.e. Instead of $100 in rebates, just take $10-$20 off that $600 item? Think about it... :-)

A good portion of your argument makes sense. I absolutely agree that my taxes should not go to morally ambiguous activities - like war. Or prisons for POW's that allow torture and ignore basic human rights. But I don't get that choice, so it doesn't work here, either. I think it would be great if we all got a checklist for taxes that said where exactly we wanted our money to go. That would eliminate a lot of programs that people don't want to fund. However, it would probably also eliminate programs that are helping people but nobody's heard of or understands them. So too bad there.

Second, while this research is not illegal, it seems like the funding thing is pushing to make it that way. I mean, private funding only happens if a) you attract someone with a big enough pocketbook to not care if you make money; or b) you find some way to make it obscenely profitable - more so, than, say, cosmetic surgery, which people pay a LOT for. It still doesn't mean the research is dead, but you may not be able to hire enough staff, or pay for new equipment, depending on how you get your funding. It also may impact other areas of research in a facility that decides to do the non-funded research - their funds for other projects may be pulled because of it! The thing that concerns me, though, is that the government can't seem to keep its hand out of debates like this recently. Not supporting it may be just the first step. Who knows?

Do I need to test 911 Dialing?

You do not need to test 911 dialing. If you have received an email confirmation from Vonage stating that your 911 dialing has been activated, then 911 dialing will work should you ever need it. If you do choose to test 911 Dialing, please test it only one time. When you call, you must inform the emergency response personnel that it is not an emergency and that you are testing your alternative emergency service to make sure it's working. If they ask why you are testing the system, explain that you are using an Internet phone service that operates differently than the traditional phone company. Vonage routes your call to the Public Service Answering Point (PSAP), which provides emergency services in your area. The appropriate PSAP is determined by the physical address you supplied when you configured 911 on your web account. Therefore, if we do not have the correct address, your call cannot be routed to the corresponding PSAP for your area. Another difference between Vonage 911 Dialing service and traditional 911 service is that the Vonage call will be routed to the PSAP's general access line, which is different from the 911 Emergency Response Center. It's simply not possible. I agree one hundred percent that EULA's need to be publicly available before the packaging is opened, and if I were given access, I would most certainly make sure they were accessable in my store to customers. Hopefully this lawsuit will result in access to those agreements and we will be encouraged/required to have them on hand, as we have manufacturer warrenties on hand from each company. I am reminding all of you that this is not a fault of the retailer (although my personal feelings towards Best Buy are extremely negative), but a fault of the manufacturer. There are so many simple solutions to the problems of software theft (or copying), and making those agreements available outside the packaging would be a great step towards protecting the retailers, the consumers, and even the software manufacturers, as they wouldn't have to worry about people making fake returns claiming that they didn't agree with the EULA.
