Yep, I had a similar situation happen to me. My wife owns a web-based business and has a monthly newsletter people can signup for. It clearly states that it's only to be a monthly newsletter, but she wanted to start sending out weekly product offers to the 100+ people signed up to the list. It took some educating, but she finally got the idea that she'd risk losing those subscribers if they didn't get what they expected.

Oh, and it also helped that I run the actual site and mailing lists themselves and refused to let that sort of thing through. Muahaha!

How about modding a network switch? I can just imagine someone working the insides to allow for a Linux capable device, wire it to one of the ports and it would be virtually undetectable -- even the switch ports would work.

Yesterday my boss printed out the Sysadmin Day page and brought it to the weekly developers meeting (that I don't usually attend). People took it upon themselves to all sign it with "Good Job!" and such, and taped it to my office door while I was in the lab. Today my boss treated me to a partially liquid lunch. Who woulda thunk it?

Someone once speculated that Valve is slowly releasing updates and patches to TFC so that one day they'll release a patch with an update message that reads, "oh and by the way, this is TF2". It seems they keep adding features to TFC that I knew/read about being introduced in TF2.

I actually had the privilege of working on and releasing TF 2.8 and 2.9 for QW (my brief and subtle brush with fame). I actually was given the sources for what was to become TF2 way back before Rob and John got hired by Valve. It was going to be a free Quake 2 mod at the time. It's a shame that the two TF guys at Valve didn't mention their pal Ian in the article, who AFAIK worked on it right there with them from the start.

Since it sounds like speed isn't really an issue with your projects, you can get relatively cheap USB-to-Parallel and USB-to-Serial converters. Buy a bunch of them if you want and throw them on a USB hub. I know first hand that the USB-to-serial is compatible with Linux (at least kernel 2.4.x) -- not sure about the other one.

Since the capability of using one's cable modem with the XBox is there, it's just a matter of attaching the XBox to a hub along with a packet sniffing system, then either alter the packets as they go in/out or just view them. Encryption is poor, since you're sacrificing performance if it's too effective. People already do this with Dark Age of Camelot, sniffing the packets and displaying maps on a Linux system, including where enemies are.
