Funny about that last point. I watched the film, and towards the end there's a short section about how the webmaster of the largest anti-Michael Moore website was faced with having to shut down the site after his wife got ill and he had medical bills to deal with.
Moore states something like, "people shouldn't have to choose between their first amendment rights and taking care of their loved ones." He sent the guy a check for $12,000. The whole thing was a little *too* meta, but it was still amusing.

It's not the party that matters. It's what it stands for. 150 years ago I probably would've sided more with the Republicans. Simple as that. Most sensible people don't have blind party loyalty. They just vote for the people who come closest to representing their views.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it innovation. FFXII isn't the first RPG to have a battle system like FFXII's. Square is kinda like Blizzard--they take the niftiest things that everyone else is doing and refine the heck out of them. The Gambit system is definitely the smoothest implementation I've seen of that sort of combat system.

  6. How can anyone find the GC controller comfortable? on What is the Best Console Controller of All Time? · · Score: 1

I mean, it's pretty comfortable to just hold. But once I start playing games with it, it frustrates me at times. In particular, the shoulder buttons are way too stiff, and my fingers (which are somewhat arthritic) start hurting quickly in any game that makes heavy use of them. And then there's the Z button. Am I the only one who finds it very awkward to reach back and forth between the R button and the Z button? I can't stand it. Sure I could put my middle finger on the R button and keep my index finger on Z, but that just doesn't feel right on the GC controller, whereas on the Dual Shock it feels just right to have my index fingers on L1 and R1 and my middle fingers on L2 and R2. They also take much less force to push. I find it the most comfortable controller overall, with maybe Dreamcast second (I prefer the Dreacast's D-pad).

It's already been pointed out that he composed the music for the E3 trailer for the game, and that he certainly did not do everything for Square.

I will also add that he has not retired. He just quit Square-Enix and is now freelance. He still does some music for them, but under freelance contracts. His band The Black Mages also came out with a new album not too long ago, and he's done music for recent games like Blue Dragon. He still has an offcial web site hosted by Square-Enix: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/uemats u/index.html

The software patent issue needs to be driven to the front of 2008 election politics. Good luck with that. The average voter thinks that the Internet is the little blue 'e' icon on their desktop, and that Windows is a type of computer (the other type of computer is a Mac). They don't even know about FOSS or could scarcely give a hoot how it's affected by Microsoft, or how software patents affect innovation in general.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think this is a great evil and I want it to get lots of attention, but even I think there are more pressing issues in the world right now.

I mean, I'm still enjoying it enough to keep watching. But it feels kinda ridiculous every time the next big plan fails and everything has to start over again from scratch. I was especially annoyed in I think it was episode 20 when they actually tried to pull another relevant detail out of his tattoo. I'm like, "No way. They are waaaaaay beyond any plan that ever had anything to do with that tattoo."

On the other hand, in several of the commentaries and in some interviews, Ron Moore has said that they have the end-game for the series already mapped out. Now, I don't know to what detail they've mapped it out, or if they really have a way to tie together *every* plot point.

But even if there are some things they make up as they go along to fill episodes (and I for one have nothing against that, as it's good material and does at least seem to be going somewhere) I don't think it's nearly as "seat of the pants" as something like Lost or The X-Files. I think that when they start any major plot thread they do sit down for a long while in the writer's room and try to figure out where they'll go with it.

Point taken. I should clarify here that I'm mainly talking about FPSs. I don't understand wanting to play them on much anything but a computer. Mouse and keyboard are just so well suited for the genre. On the other hand, I'm waiting to see what a good FPS for the Wii feels like. That has the potential to change my mind entirely.

At any rate, I use my game console mainly for things like party games and RPGs. The main draw of the X-Box being FPSs, it seems, I see no reason to get one since my other two needs are fulfilled best by a Nintendo console and a Playstation.
