You mean you aren't hardcore enough to get the apache without the cop uniform? Damn it man. Get the chain gun and get your hands dirty. It makes stealing the apache all the sweeter:)
lol no defo not a slowest computer contest or I would have entered something better than a 1GHz thunderbird. I mean my server is a 90mhz Digital DECpc and it does all I need it for (mind you wouldn't want to see it take a slashdotting).
Was just pointing out that a 2.5 year cycle is unnecessarily short.
Even 2.5yrs isn't strictly necessary unless you are a)a major gamer or b)doing cpu intensive work.
I recently completed a CS degree with only a 1GHz machine to my disposal and only recently have I upgraded. It played all the games I needed fine.. GTA, UT just not any of the latest whiz bang stuff. I had that machine for a good 5 years I believe.
I for one, am happy to pay for my TV license in order to avoid advertising on BBC channels and the BBC news website. It is amazing to see the so called 'half hour' simpsons finish in about 20 mins when there are no ads.
Maybe though the BBC should check the location of the IP address and stick up adverts to all those outside the UK who aren't paying a license though:-)
Yes, this is exactly my point though. From a hobbiest/computer science point of view, I think the very fact that Syllable is at the stage where it has a working GUI is a testament to the team. But asking 'Why aren't people using it' like the article, is a redundant question. Like you say, it isn't ready for the majority of people to use it is the obvious answer.
Obviously they pay no attention, but it at least makes them think about what they are buying rather than being too taken in by the marketing hype of the latest and greatest.
Did it do what she wanted it to? If so, whats the problem? Although I might be stabbing my own industry in the foot, I am in daily awe of money wasting friends and family that ask my advice on what brand new 64-bit COTS PC they should buy. When I ask what they want it for, it is usually 'oh, you know, Word'. My reaction is usually, go get an electronic typewriter and save yourself £800..
Indeed, I think this article is pretty redundant to be honest. The top of the syllable news on the homepage states that PPP support has now been added to the OS. Now, call me a whiner, but how many people do you think are going to use an OS that has only just managed to get PPP support? Is such an OS really going to be capable of the day to day tasks of the majority of todays computer users? Users who won't even know what PPP is? No, won't even know what a modem is? Oh, but according to the news blurb, dial-up support isn't available yet anyway..
It only makes it difficult because in general, the firewalls are set up to allow * out with a destination port 80. If they could be arsed, they could still block IP addresses. That said, then the attacker would just change IP or proxy.
I also question how they know that most of the attackers are in a certain area. Could it not just be that the majority of open proxies are in that area, and that attackers from all over the world tend to use these proxies?
Just a thought..
I'm not really surprised that there are problems upgrading from woody to sarge. Some of the packages used in woody for example probably don't even exist under the new tree. I know, for example, that those on woody are probably still using exim3, and sarge will use exim4. Except for very simple files, there is no automated and reliable way to upgrade exim3 conf files to exim4, so exim4 needs to be reconfigured manually. With such a large jump, I wouldn't really expect things to be 100% smooth to be honest.
As I often tell people who routinely do just that - you shouldn't rely on journaling (ntfs/ext3) to avoid corrupting data. It is meant as a failsafe afterall..
I haven't looked, but where does the 'auto update' feature look for its updates? If it is checking back to his domain each time the app loads, and that domain is now being signed over to 'the company'... this could land lots of people in shit if they used this to its advantage. They could quickly get a list of 'users'.
But how can you help? You cannot release resources in Java. The garbage collector should automatically free up resources which no longer have any reference pointing to them...
In C you can malloc a ton of memory and then never free it, thus wasting memory. Garbage collecting languages do not require manual allocation/freeing.
Yes but like Java, Javascript surely uses a garbage collection concept meaning it is the browsers responsibility to free memory, and any leaks are thus due to the browser.
hmmm anti spam packages for sneaker net. Maybe slapping the postman each time he posts a spam letter. He'd soon learn to sort out the spam first..
Maybe you have done an apt-get upgrade where an apt-get dist-upgrade may have been more apt ha, get it.
Taxiiiii

My thoughts exactly. In my experience, the ones that were in it for the money were rarely worth their salt.
Ya but don't forget about the anti conterfeit stuff in Photoshop etc
I think you are confused. More crashes != better.

Ok, just kidding.

I mean, come on.
Indeed, and if you strapped a piece of buttered toast to a cat and dropped it, would it just spin in mid air??

If you can't delete it from safe mode, boot up with your windows CD and delete it from the recovery console.

At least at present, the mirror links present on googles cache of the download page are still live...
What are the chances of us geeks unbundling IE7 from XP and working it into a package for 2K somehow?

And there are never any missing deps?
