    Uhhh, the money factor is how they are different. Why do you care if someone is watching something when they have neither paid for it or are watching advertisements? People in that park don't add to the ratings.

    We're transitioning all our servers away from mixed Microsoft/Linux to entirely Linux over the next little while. We're using Novell.

    Most people on the desktop will still slave away under Windows - finance refused to let me have a Mac.

    That's not entirely correct. Both the sun and the moon contribute to the tides. While the moon is primarily responsible, the sun has a secondary effect, which causes the spring and neap tides - where the peak to peak variation is maximized and minimized respectively.

    Just to build on your excellent post which bridges the user-land concepts to developer land concepts (branching) - most Mac software doesn't have such a concept of a file. iTunes, iPhoto - they don't force you think about files, and iPhoto has very basic versioning (revert to original) built right in.

    THen I go back to work, use windows and cuss.

    You don't understand. The vast majority of companies are cash driven. So even though you have won that big contract, you need to pay your engineers before the cash starts rolling in. This means that extras that look like good investments from a P/L point of view can't be done because of cash constraints. It's only large organizations or ones with tons of VC capital (which brings its own set of problems) that have that freedom.

    There's also a nugget in there for you aspiring development manager types - how to get buy in to your new coding standards. Since most developers don't wake up in the morning prepared to be awe inspired by your latest writings and edicts from on high, it's important to them to feel included in the process, like they own it.

    Then your best bet is to include them in the process of building the standards. Perhaps sit down with each person and get some ideas, and collate them together, and pull everyone into a single meeting, with a set time limit to discuss each sugestion. 80 character line limit? Yes or no? Your devs should decide. Sometimes they will make the wrong decision, so that's where you come in along the way to poke the conversation with careful questions in the right direction.

    Do you have any idea how nasty this makes the plant oils? It turns them into trans-fats generally, which are known to be very bad for you.

    On a recent trip to Spain I observed that they used oil in the place of butter on bread. Even buying a packaged ham and cheese roll came with a small bag of olive oil to spread on the bread. All the advantages of fat on your bread, but without the nasty side effects.

    GDP isn't very good either, as it means exchange rates matter, a lot. It's pretty well established that the Chinese Yuan is undervalued - this will have the effect of increasing the pollution per %GDP. A better metric would be GDP at PPP.

    As someone that is involved in authoring Breast Screening software that is now transitioning to digital mammography units, I can give a few points:

    1. Making a diagnosis from an image scanned into a digital system by even the best scans is generally not done. The Radiologist will typically want the original - and that's even when done with real equipment.

    2. As others have mentioned, the tools to do this are very very specialised - including extermely hi-res monitors with very fine contrast ratios.

    In short, keep the x-rays, carry them around. They have very high information density.

    I'm from New Zealand. The UN no more represents me or my opinion than it represents the US and its opinion. The rest of the world is far from united behind this UN resolution. I for one think the US has done a fine job and I would much rather it be controlled in the US than in some wholly undemocratic institution where repressive governments would get a say in governance.

    "An African American man has been taken into custody"

    These two statements while both truthful contribute to a racist feeling. The press never mentions someone's race when they are white, but they do when they are not white. Why???

    Poker isn't about poor math skills. If you are any good at the game, the odds are in your favour. Similarly at least here in New Zealand, the national lottery frequently has an expected return better than even, when it jackpots.

    Do all the morally superior freaks such as yourself then run out and buy thousands of dollars of tickets because your superior maths skills tell you to? No. Truth be said, you're scared of gambling with your money. You hide behind that veneer. But you're wrong.

    Nah, you're right, they're not evil per se. But it very much is a deal... is what they offer you worth what you have to pay for it.

    For a lot of people, that's an OK deal. For me, it's not because I value my privacy a little more than most.

    Hmm, I've just come back from China myself. The tap water is heavily chlorinated. I wouldn't drink it, but it won't kill you.

    Yes, the cities are dirty, but no more so than European cities of 100 years ago. If they need to be cleaned up they can be. It just requires money and/or willpower, neither of which China has in abundance.

    That's really odd. I just came back from China as well. I stayed in 4 star hotels (so cheap!!) all the time. I was never given this advice. Furthermore, the water in Beijing and most other cities is heavily chlorinated so while it wasn't the tastiest, it won't kill you.

    However, I never did drink the stuff (well, once by accident when I automatically got a drink).
