Award shows absolutely should be able to, Movie Studios/Distributors absolutely shouldn't be allowed to. The devil is always in the details, The nerd analogy would be if Intel refused to advertise on CNet unless CNet only reviewed CPU's produced by in house fabrication.
10% of the market would be too small for economies of scale to kick in and we'd all end up paying more. The problem is anything where one-off costs are significantly greater than per-item costs a monopoly is the most efficient market. This being slashdot all know that this is the case with software and have seen the evils of microsoft and intel. The solution isn't just a simple split of any company that becomes too large but to ban vertical integration for companies that become too large. Luxotica should have to split it's design, manufacturing and retail companies to allow competitors equally opportunity.
Pure carbon wouldn't be burnt, Worst case is it goes to steel productions but there are plenty of other places pure carbon is used that could make this process economical.
The best outcome is of course to assess every candidate as an individual, this isn't however practical. So if you are short-listing a group of graduates based upon GPA then it is worth scaling to give the person who had to keep a job during college a chance. Most evidence of bias in testing is due to Socio-Economic factors not race, however minority races are generally lower placed socio-economically.
So yes affirmative action is flawed and overly simplistic but let's not pretend that the 'no action' path is balanced. I personally believe that a shortlist of candidates ensure it includes minorities but after that point it should play no further part in the hiring process.
I always think we stuffed up by going with Troll instead of Trawl.
Troll should be kept exclusively for people trying to get a response out of someone. We shouldn't be using it to describe bullies trying to silence others.
I'll take the bait.
Over represented demographics are an indicator that you have a problem with the hiring processes, when your groups demographics don't match the wider population then you should change the hiring/review/culture that caused the mismatch. You absolutely should never hire anyone but the best candidate and diversity numbers should never be a goal.
This doesn't mean that the race of the person doesn't affect the assessment. For instance if a certain demographic typically performs worse in standardized testing then their ability would otherwise suggest then you should scale that appropriately when assessing the best candidate. If however the reason for your demographics being under represented is a surprising number of people leaving after your annual Christmas party a hooters no amount of hiring will fix it.
My Vote: Barry Humphries
He's a master of disguise and is clearly part of the communist ABC's plot to overthrow the government with independently researched news and current affairs. Not to mention his latest efforts to highlight Australia's natural wonder is clearly targeted at stopping miners from profiting from environmental destruction.
Bill Shorten https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... Likely to be Australia's Next Prime minister and most of his party are former Union Leaders and when they win the leader is either former union leader or union managemnt of some sort. While this may not be the case in the US we have a problem with unions in Australia https://www.theguardian.com/au...
Note the US is one country on slashdot, the rest of the world is represented here also
Yes we have a problem with unions, but we would definitely be worse off without them. Going of the most recent royal commission we also have a problem with banks but we would be worse without them. And spoiler alert here but we have a problem with aged care in this country.
It's pretty unfair to use the results of a royal commission, most of which have already been dealt with, to claim we have a major problem, they have proven quite crucial in dealing with hidden problems before they get too out of control to deal with.
Alternatively having I love having a track of the GPS co-ordinates with each purchase, makes deciphering the random ass company names against my statement a lot easier. No longer do I have to wonder what the $23.57 I spent at SJP trading was for.
There was an interesting study that showed this. The more interesting part is that women were equal in negotiating salaries for a third party to men were but less good at negotiating their own. This leads towards an argument that women often undervalue their own contribution in comparison to men.
Correlation is good enough to justify discovery, Once the lawyers get their hands on performance reviews/productivity stats and whatever else then we can see what the truth is. Unfortunately regardless of the truth we will only ever see a settlement with no admission of guilt and a big fat NDA.
In the before google era there were travel agents and tourist information kiosk's that would help you plan an itinerary around the various places. You would see something like the Birdsville races on a travel show and then you would speak to tourist information or a travel agent to organise an itinerary that would include various stop offs around the region.
You don't need to double fry to avoid soggy fries, but you do need to double cook them. I've found microwaving the potatos using your microwaves baked potato settings followed by frying at a high temperature (~190) produces better fries than either double frying or boiling then frying does.
Microsoft 100% does get that the average person doesn't need a PC.
They invested millions trying to get windows phone to work. And now they have a really strong android presence (I currently use the Windows Android Launcher) with half decent versions of office as apps as well as the 365 offering. The decoupling of Cortana from search is most likely so that it can be packaged to better on android. The windows UI is heavily influenced by laptop/single monitor users and I don't see this changing any time soon. My biggest frustration is I can't automatically size a window to half screen on the left side of my right monitor.
I would guess Netflix tried to licence "Choose your own adventure" for their idea of a fair price but Chooseco wanted more. Now Chooseco is beginning to see how little their IP is actually worth. I fully expect them to sell of the rights to some low budget producer soon to try and cash in on Netflix's releases.
Patents, Copyright and trademark are not the same.
You can be inspired by a trademark all you want, as long as you don't give the appearance you are in anyway associated with the trademark owner you are completely in the clear. Just look at any generic brand groceries, Dr Radical is clearly inspired by Dr Pepper but there isn't any brand confusion so they are in the clear.
Both the artists wife & close friend of the Owner, so there is the incentive. Beyonce's album at least was also an exclusive to the service and was heavily promoted by new organisations as showing that the streaming service could compete with traditional outlets.
The car analogy is that the ISP is the highway and bittorrent is a courier service that use the highway. While bittorrent was previously only used free standard delivery they are now planning to offer an express delivery service. What's more is they are embracing the Uber model and letting anyone sign up to be a local delivery driver so that they can offer the express service.
This isn't always true, there is some high quality small telecoms out there which don't do any of these things.
They will of course be bought out if they ever become large enough.
Yes but it is cheaper to replace a $100 device than a $2000 TV.
Rotten Tomatoes is slowly starting to bend the knee to the studios.

I would classify $60 as about $50, but that's just me I guess

Darth Maul is the Prequel's version of Boba Fett, he became so popular they needed to keep him around for merch reasons.

why not just have it show actual data throughput speed
1.8Md/.8Mu, for example.
Because that would show that you aren't reaching the peak advertised rates.
