"
an angry outburst asking why commercial software systems are often so wretched"
I like to think of it as "Job Security". As long as the average office worker maintains a certain fear of computers they will keep paying me for what I consider a hobby.
I would also like to see them offer a computer without PS2, Serial, Game & Printer ports. Instead have extra USB 2.0 & IEEE1394 ports. Maybe put a memory card reader where the floppy was. Even use Serial ATA over IDE. I think Dell could offer this as a seperate PC along with the other "legacy computers".
For those who need them you can get an external USB Floppy drive. Or the IBM docking station that plugs into a USB port and provides Serial, PS2 & Printer ports plus double as a USB hub.
If you think the RIAA is worried about all these people downloading songs for free and pirating music
Their NOT.
Free downloads can actually help sales in the same way that radio does. And the pirates who have 1000's of mp3's probably would not have paid for any of that anyway.
So what are they worried about?
Distribution. Their greatest fear is that artists will start releasing music on their own, side stepping the recording industry and their slave like contracts. Once an artist can release music (without the record company) through the Internet. The record companies will cease to exist. End of story
I think maybe we need to set an age limit for Congress. Local Judges in my state can not work past the age of 70. Yet the people who create the laws can be 80, 90 almost 100. When Strom Thurmond left office at age 99 he could barely do
anything on his own.
I really think it's time voters started controlling congress instead of the other way around. Although seeing as how less than half (at best) of the population votes I don't see this happening anytime soon. If all the voters between the age of 18-30 voted we could pick who is elected out right.
"Two MIT grad students bought used drives from eBay.... Among the data found..... were 5,000 credit-card numbers, porn, love-letters and medical information."
Almost reminds me of the "Quake III" optimized drivers.
For those who don't remember. ATI released drivers that gave high frame per second scores in Quake III. QIII being a common bench mark this made their cards appear to run very fast. It turns out that the driver looked for the Quake3.exe file and reduced the video quality to up the frame rate. If you changed the name of the file to something like Quack3.exe and ran it. The video quality improved while the frame rate dropped.
It's not that ATI has bad hardware, just horrible drivers and poor judgement.
NVidia has a list of "Lauch Games" for the GeforceFX. Command & Conquer: Generals, Unreal II, Rallisport Challenge, Sea Dogs II & Splinter Cell. Screen shots and some movies are included.
So I am out late partying. So late that I get home around sunrise. As daylight breaks I fall asleep. What felt like a few hours later I wake up and it is dark out. It seems I slept the day away. So I go back to sleep. What felt like a few hours later I wake up and it is light out. Now I panic.... How long have I been asleep? As the hangover fades my memory returns and I have missed the eclipse in the span of 6 hours of sleep.
I would like to be able to download the actual CD audio.wav files. The time it takes me to download one of these with DSL is about how long it would take a standard modem to download a MP3. This way I can convert it later into any format I choose. Or just burn the CD, print out the liner notes and skip going to the store.
Stanley Mouse has got to be one of the best album cover artists. Back in the days of records he did covers for Journey, The Grateful Dead and Steve Miller among others.
It's a shame now that the packaging for CD's generally is pretty boring.
Even though Slashdot handles all of its users fine now. Serving up large files like images and video instead of just text would cause it to suffer its own effect.
I went to the Space.com website and most of the page was obscured by pop-up ads. Sadly this made me remember that last year I got up at 4 a.m. to watch the show and was greeted with thick fog.
I want to swap all my Cowboy Neal votes in the Slashdot polls!
Now maybe my Sig. will have more meaning.
SDF-1 Also know as Super Dimensional Fortress, is what started the Robotech wars.

The army already is looking to buy a BFG.

Dark Horizons is the best movie news site I have found so far.
If you know of a better one. Post it so I can bookmark it.
"On October 5, 1990, Q*Bert was found face down in an aquarium filled with kerosene"
Sounds to me like the work of the Mario Bros.

I think that was MY hard drive.
That's it I'm giving them negative feedback!
Don't forget KDE 3.1rc2
Reminds me of a joke:
Two Kids are in a hospital together
The one kid says to the other "What are you in for"
The other kid replies "Getting my Tonsils out"
The one kid says "Oh that's nothing I had that done when I was 5 and you only get a sore throat and they give you lots of ice cream"
The other kid replies "Wow that does not seem so bad, what are you in for"
The one kid replies "A Circucision"
The ohter kid then says "Oh, I had that when I was born... I could'nt walk for a year"
Finally I can get a Mr. Fusion to power my Flux Capacitor.
Maybe a 16X DVD-R drive will settle the war between DVD-R and DVD+R. One can only hope.
AMD is also not quiting it's "True Performance Initiative" Read an update at the Tech Report.
In order to make the world a better place. I think we all need to get in touch with our inner Einstein.
"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." ~ Albert Einstein

Maybe in a few years when the Sims Online has run it's course, they can integrate the "Massive" program and have a huge battle at the end.
I would pay to see that.
