More people have died from heat waves in the East in the last 50 years than from Earthquakes in California. Same for Tornados. More Homes have been destroyed by tornados than Earthquakes too.
At the Brad Mehldau (an easterner) concert in Santa Cruz last night, he and his bandmates rode it out (it occured between numbers) and played on.
A tornado could have taken the place off the map. No one was ever shaken to death by an earthquake.
There has to be a party...right? I mean...all the suffering and anticipation (I'll miss that) and now we're just supposed to take 1.0 use it and be happy? I want a party. It should be everywhere. International holiday maybe. Free drinks. And lot's of red lizards.
...they need protection from the mafia. The industry keeps a stable of "artists" (I HATE the "a" word) in servitude (ultimately at the "artist's" expense) in hopes that they can milk a few for high margins. I would rather have a reasonable chance of earning a living at music than a long-shot a superstardom. Access to channels is what makes this possible. Defense of channels is the Industry's mission in life.
The big one is coming. But for perspective, heat waves in the midwest have killed more people in the last fifty years than all of our earthquakes combined. So have tornadoes. No one has ever been shaken to death by a quake. The economy however could be shaken to near death.
A large quake in the East would also have a collossal economic impact.
I hope I'm in Canada, a guaranteed earthquake-free zone;-)
...when I leave the bay area is the Kuumbwa jazz center and Yoshis. Good live music is hard to find in small towns, though Santa Cruz (Kuumbwa) is an exception. I won't even get into the housing prices here.
Canada consistently wins the best lifestyle award in some annual poll ( help me out here ). I like Vancuover. Not the cheapest city in Canada but I need to be in the West and near the coast ( else I freak out ). I could go there. Anyone?
Ooooooh....will it somehow get through the crap lines in my neighborhood where DSL can't even go 5000ft? I'll have to continue renting an office in town until redwood tress can route tcp/ip packets. The phone lines, plumbing, electric lines are all crap here. Cable? Someday( they promise ). And I can't get line of site to the satellites what with the 200+ ft tall trees and all. And 500k for a small 3 bedroom house? Maybe I'll move to Nevada. No...wait....they don't have Kuumbwa ( www.kuumbwajazz.com )....nevermind.
I agree that a self motivated individual may do better in a university than on their own. But they may not. My point is that young pre-college students should not be constrained by the scarcity meme that underlies the educational systems of the world..."We have a scarce resource; knowledge. You must come to us to get it and we will vouch for your efforts." Not exactly network characteristics.
As to social contact, well we're participating in a revolution in that regard even as we speak, type, blog..you know what i mean.
To the point of proving your qualifications to prospective employers, I like to apply the old addage " tell people what you are going to do, but show them first". Submitting resumes to HR departments is one of the worst ways to go about getting a job. They screen on much more then degrees. Build something, create something, make something unique, tangible...and show it to the right person. You will be hired. Then tell the HR folks what you can do.
I have a problem with the presumption that someone who has acheived the CS skills required to compete successfully in the market has not or cannot have also educated themselves in math, business, the arts , other sciences etc...
Anyone who has educated themselves in these areas has far more focus, persistence, passion and discipline than most who do so with the aid of an educational institution. While tremendous resources are available at these facilities, anyone with the personal quialities to go it alone will continue educating themseleves at a much higher rate then most for whom education was something that you got in school.
Education is not something that other people do to you.
Calculus, chemistry, music....all can be learned to any degree on your own. I, and many others, are examples of those who do so out of pure curiosity about the world in which we live and passion for things that we love.
I don't have a degree, never went to college, and have never been asked if I did. I, and many others, am a successful SW Engineering consultatnt who has been judged on my track record and ability to perform.
To move into management...no problem. The MBA curriculum is available in books and is easy to master.....for the self educating individual.

At least it was courteous enough to shake between numbers at the Brad Mehldau concert last night at Kuumbwa. The drummer was a bit freaked.

Rip the video..record music,foley,dialog....mix burn/upload...yeah baby.
