WHAT? Way to drink the VOIP koolaid! They need money NOW because they MAY need it in the future? That makes no sense whatsoever. Are they going to refund the money if they dont need it?
Yep, Symantec has been crap for quite some time. If you want *good* protection use Trend or Panda. Trend being better than Panda (although i prefer the UI of panda).
I think at some point in this country we are going to have an honest debate about age of consent. In most european countries it varies from 14-17.
We like to maintain this fantasy that our kids are NOT having sex -- but, Ive been in the back rooms, and the level of detachment young people have from sex took me until my late 20's to develop.
I see a future where we will have very fast processors giving the illusion of a very fast and responsive computer - so long as that computer idles most of the time. If you actually try to use that power for more than a few seconds, thermal throttling will kick in and clock the CPU back down to today's speeds to keep the computer from melting.
I have exactly that situatino with a HP ZD7000 laptop. Theres a videogame I play called "savage". I noticed after a while the fan goes *FULL* bore after a couple minutes, and the performance gets very bad. Well its a videogame, I guess thats whats supposed to happen right?:) Long story short, I installed a cpu monitoring program and the cpu was dropping its clock from 3.2ghz all the way down to 1ghz sometimes. If I just shoving a book under the laptop it has a much easier time circulating air and the fans now run very low throughout the game.
Dont forget -- the lockin effect. Broadband usually costs round 50$ a month, but in reality its more like 100$ -- reason being -- you cant GET broadband in most cities without subscribing to other services. Our cable+internet bill weights in at about 120$/m -- 50ish a month for internet, 70$ a month for a modest subscription to cable.
That was my first thought as well. Ive been following the case and this makes no sense to me:(... I can understand perl but I cant understand "english"? heh
Which is great but my undertanding of DeCSS when it was released was that they said once they cracked one of the keys they could have gone on to crack them all. If this thing is CSS on steroids then what's to stop someone doing a concerted attack to grab one key, cracking a whole bunch of them from major manufacturers. Are they really going to risk the wrath of millions of consumers who discover their players don't work any more?
I know absolutely nothing about CSS, but do know a few things about encryption in general. Once you have a copy of the data you are TRYING to decrypt, you can do a "known plaintext" attack -- which is fancy words for, "ah ha fuckers! Now I know what im looking for!!" Which generally makes the search space for the cracking much smaller (faster).
I dunno about anyone else but, Im sick of this bullshit. Its been 3 or 4 years since the decss fiasco and STILL linux support for dvds SUCK. I'm just not going to play ball anymore. Im not buying this hardware anymore.
Not to mention standing in line with a bunch of hot teeners remembering when you could get girls like that with your fat g/f at your side... >sigh(laugh, its a joke)
5 years ago if I sent an email to someone, I was virtually assured they got it. Now, I am forced to follow up almost *EVERY* email I get with a "Got it, thanks" or a if I dont hear from someone in a few days -- a phone call. Not a big deal, but not exactly the modern marvel of technology we were looking for?
I've heard about VOIP spam becoming the next big thing -- I really weep for the future. What am I going to follow up PHONE calls with? Certified Letters?
This is a perfect example of a professor who needs to be fired.
The program saves him over 200 hours of DOING HIS FUCKING JOB. If he didnt want to read papers -- hes in the wrong line of work. End of story, finish him.
The other half of this story is -- universities make students write TONS of worthless papers. Students leave a program having written scores of papers -- and they never learn HOW to write papers. I am amazed at how many college graduates I meet who do not understand formal writing.
RMS is a nut, but NUTS ARE GOOD. Bill Gates is *exactly* the opposite kind of nut. If Bill had his way, you'd "subscribe" to software and keep paying for it every month (MS has mentioned this as their ultimate goal). If RMS had his way, software would be open (good), free (good), and nobody would be able to make a living writing software (bad).
Together they put pressure on each other and arrive at a reasonable medium.
Is it gloating if you *WERE* right though? The BitKeeper guy, Larry something? Has always been a capital asshole.
The open source position on this one is not outrageous: they want a client which can't be taken away from them.
Larry, responds by *TAKING THE CLIENT AWAY* thus proving exactly what people were saying in the first place -- we've indirectly put Larry in a position of power as he controls the only tool we can now use: not only are we ethically opposed to this, but he seems to be a dick to.

Thats possible. Its also possible that the pakistani company is a straw man, it may exist and was told to customize pearpc or it may not exist at all.
I interviewed for a contract position at which the labor was estimated to be about 1000-1500 man hours. 500 machines, each process took 2-3 hours. And yet -- the contract duration was 2 months. It was obvious at the end of the two months either, I would take the blame for not having done the impossible task, or depending on the terms of the contract, I might even have been LIABLE for not doing the impossible. Needless to say, I never saw the contract because I told them where to stick it.
My point is--people use contractors in a lot of creative ways. Its a great way as a manager to shield yourself from blame. Id say either scenario (yours or mine) is equally likely
Yep, this is fluff journalism/science, whatever they claim it is. What the study basically says is- peoples confidence in their OS is about the same no matter what OS they use.
Im not a conservative, but I have RESPECT for (real) conservatives. How government is supposed to operate, is everyone keeps everyone elses ideas in check. So you conservatives keep us liberals from doing everyting we want, and vice versa, that way government moves in slow and deliberate ways.
The problem we have here now is that everyone is afraid of these Neocons because theyve gathered a little power -- but they're going down, and they're going down HARD.
You forgot the real reason -- that it looks like (after 40 years of speculation), that we may finally be at Peak Oil may have finally happened -- and that we might be in for one of the largest societal changes in the history of man.
f'rinstance.. "The Left" at Cal Poly San Louis Obispo, a student was, by the government of the state of california, told to remove a flyer from a wall because it was offensive, told to write a letter of apology because he offended a couple of easily offendable black folk, and was threatened with expulsion and forfieture of his tuition. That is ACTUAL censorship. That is done by the government against the people with the force of law.
Something similiar happened to a friend of mine at UCR a few years back. There were these *REALLY* radical lesbian types who had come to campus and been "preaching" all week -- you know the type, "I cant get a boyfriend, or I got raped, so all men are evil, lets eat pussy" kind of girls. They were male bashing on campus all week, so this frat went out and setup a table, and they each took giant cards to rate the women who passed by. They only took cards labeled 6 - 10 so nobody got rated lower then a 6. Long story short -- they were hauled before the vice dean at the complaint of the radical lesbians who had been male bashing all week, and were told they could attend a sexual harrasment workshop, OR, have their frat disbanded.. Funny thing was -- during the workshop they specifically mentioned that rating women was NOT sexual harrasment.
Another story at UCR -- happened to me personally, I got TOTALLY screwed out of a job. Now the university has an office that investigates unfair hiring practices, but ONLY as it applies to minorities. I was told since I was not a minority, woman, disabled, that they wouldnt investigate. So basically, the only group they DONT represent is -- white men.
Theres a lot of double standards out there, and im tired of being on the wrong end of em:)

And now your serverv is toast as well. What the hell were you thinking? :)
The GPL simply codifies that you must give to recieve. Why do you think BSD has been outpaced by Linux/GPL?

Should be able to build you a box and write the software. My consulting company for instance :)

After knowing that CS Lewis wrote the Screwtape Letters can you really have any respect for him?
