Depends on the car you want.

If you were shopping for something like my Subaru WRX, anyone you find will almost always be a manual. Automatics do exist, but the WRX is a sporty, fun-to-drive car - most people who buy this kind of car prefer the extra performance and fun a manual provides.

You will have a tough time finding a modern SUV in a manual. I think ford offers a manual transmission in the lowest trim escape and explorer, but that's pretty much it. Your average SUV driver doesn't want to bother with shifting. Hell, even I wouldn't want to shift one - it'd just be more work, not extra fun.

The vast majority of Americans want something simple and easy to drive. An automatic works just fine for them. I think i read somewhere that about 10% of the cars on the road in the US are manual.

A friend of mine had his laptop stolen. We went about once a month to the IT offices and had them check their logs for his MAC addresses (both wired and wireless), we never saw them. Then i decided to go warwalking through our dorm buildings while filtering for his wireless card's MAC. After about 20 minutes i found it. It took some time to locate the exact room - finding the floor was easy, but the old, old buildings on campus do some funny things with radio signals.

We eventually found the machine, called campus police, and my friend had his laptop back.

The very next day he left for a frat rush and left his door standing wide open. Not an hour later his laptop was gone.

I think you're right. This won't be a "You're on safe roads, we have evidence you've been safe, let's lower your premiums." It will just be a way for them to catch you making mistakes more often so they can raise your premiums more.

I'm 19. I drive a 2 door car with 260 horsepower. I pay out my ass for car insurance because the insurance companies think those factors increase my risk of a claim.

However, i've been involved in one accident (i was rear-ended and the damage was so insignificant i didn't bother with a claim) and I've never been pulled over. Yet I don't get any credit for that. My rates aren't any lower. I'm assumed a big risk because i'm young and drive a fast car, and there's no way to i prove that i am in fact a good, responsible driver. Yet that should be even more apparant because i drive a car that is very easy to get into trouble with.

This sytem will only be used to screw the customer.

England (and i'm sure other countries) used to have a legal vigilante system for dealing with pirates on the open seas. The government didn't have the resources to handle the problem, so it would allow privateers, with the proper paperwork of course, to go play pirate, but only to pirate ships. The infamous Captain Kidd was one such privateer, although later in life which side he was on wasn't exactly clear.

I wonder how a system like this would work for today? Would we devise a way to keep tabs on the privateers to keep them from turning black hat?

Invent This was one of my favorites from TechTV, and i'm glad it carried over. Too bad the same didn't happen for Big Thinkers.

XPlay is a show that hasn't changed its basic form, and is still pretty good. The reviews are solid, the hosts know what they're talking about and don't pull any punches when it comes to reviewing, and Morgan is easy on the eyes.

I'm hoping for the Screen Savers to turn quality after they get going in LA.

I think there's a difference between a good storyline for a book, and a good storyline for a game. Instead of observing what goes on like in a book or movie, a game story line has to place you inside the events. Therefore, stories with action are better than something like, say, Big Fish. How boring would it be to play through The Great Gatsby? Half Life's story was good because it did a good job of making you the action hero in the action movie. Something like Deus Ex is even better, because in addition to pull you into the action it brings up important moral issues, has good characters with well-defined personality, etc. But i wouldn't want to read a Deus Ex book.
