Sorry, fail. The rates I cited are corrected for frequency of offence. The simple fact is, given a black man and a white man committing the same crime, blacks are more likely to be given the death penalty.
do your statistics include money availble to spend on attorney's fees? annual incomes?
read the article. he's a swimmer. lettered in swimming in hs. they're comparing being an athelete to being a nerd (which i suppose infers very little physical activity).
this brings up an interesting point in that prison, or punishment in general is a way to deter criminals as well as assure everybody else that should a crime be commited against them, whoever is responsible will be dealt with.
if punishment stopped fitting the crime people would then take it upon themselves to administer a justice they deem fair.
and the "fitting" is for every individual very subjective, so the government continuosly tries to keep the balance.
now while i agree that the details of how we punish our criminals may need some updating, the need for some sort of revenge (or call it justice) is simply human and not subject to much change.
there will always be the transendentalists preaching be merciful the prisoners, coddle them, rehabilitate them. be compassionate. but there are more and much louder (at least for now) proponents of our current revenge type system.
i dunno, to me the whole idea behind unions is that the employer is out to screw the employee so in return if we all band together we can in turn gouge the employer.
and from the sentiment i've seen toward unions the struggle is now just in the opposite direction.
unfortunately in industries such as game development where the abuse of employees is possible due to the imbalance in employee supply and demand, more often than not managers say, "wtf, we'll just keep screwing them until the potential employee pool equalizes or until they form a union"... all in the effort to pad the bottom line.
i've read a lot of comments from this and the previous article on these EA happenings, and i agree that a happy, focused, rested employee performs much better (at least in the software industry) than a cranky, tired, disgruntled one... the only problem here is that the EA managers are operating on false premises (e.g. the more overtime someone works, the better they perform and crank out).
it's our job to make this painfully clear that their premises are wrong.
btw, the way these kinds of things happen is when people who are good at certain things (perhaps organizing a business, providing financial support) are placed into management positions because supposedly that's more prestigious and pays better, but in turn they are horrible managers but since they now are in the position to decide who stays and who gos, they would rather blame poor performance or worker disgruntledness on the workers and not themselves.
and like in many situations... despite their best efforts to fail... they succeed and are validated in their management decisions.
oh well... that's what the courts are there for i suppose.
it bugged the HELL out of me... even after reinstalling OEM OS and proper video drivers there was still a lag with both the mouse pad and any external mouse.
only on this one dell laptop (of many i've had) has this been a problem. seems to just be a defect.
The only people who will benefit from outsourcing are corporate execs and stockholders.
Not necessarily.
Companies that save money by outsourcing their product development are enhancing their bottom line... we can agree on that I think.
However, you might be assuming too much when you say only the execs and stockholders will be the only beneficiaries here.
What if... instead of taking a larger salary the CEO of a company decides to lower the price of his/her product (or in addition to taking a larger salary for that matter)?
This is where market competition comes into play... say there are 3 companies that provide a similar product and they all start to outsource and consequently save a significant amount of money. What if only one of the companies lowers the retail price and the other two distribute the added profits among themselves?
Either latter two companies begin producing a better product or they lower their price as well to match the first company. Otherwise, demand for their product will decrease and they will be forced by the market to either quit producing the product or go bankrupt.
A similar analogy can be made with man vs. machine... 10 men can produce the same product in the twice the time as 1 machine... so a smart (and maybe greedy) exec will fire the 10 men and buy the machine. The price for the product is subsequently lowered and the perhaps 100,000 people that buy the product each save a small percentage.
So you see, we can (a possibility, not an absolute) see savings from outsourcing.
if what you said about moving expertise does happen, america will be paying china enough money so that by creating a conflict w/ america, china will have in effect shot itself in the foot (econmically speaking).
do you think the saudi arabian government (not the tiny radical groups) will begin a war with the US and risk losing all the oil based income we're providing.
look at it this way... if we didn't trade with any nations at all then they wouldn't have any reason NOT to go to war with us outside just being nice. however, if we're putting money in their pockets they're likely to be a little friendly (at least enough so that we keep on trading).
This load of crap is nothing more than the ranting of some social evolutionist who believes that humans are driven by nothing more than instinct and so tries to come up with some biological mechanism to explain why human men marry human women.
You're the one who sounds like he's ranting! And infact humans are driven by instinct... at least much more than religion or civilization in general would have you believe.
At any rate, try and make a real argument next time and not just mindless chitchat (although that's asking a lot from the/. crowd:p)

different cultures place value on different things. this applies to a lot of things including video games... surprised? i didn't think so.

as long as there are no follow up questions... no.

does anyone else see a little white dot near the top ... just under the ads?
