Poor lesson plans are another reason kids do not take intrest, it is easy to teach interesting science classes, but teachers would rather have students memorizing the periodic table of elements. No wonder they hate science.

Look at the dog and pony show associated with our current presidential election. How many Americans do you think could tell you the difference between one candidates political standpoints and the next? Why is it that although many Americans share similar views on foreign policy, our elected officials rarely agree? Do you have any idea how much CNN (nooo..) you have to watch to try and figure out what one candidate wants to do with his term in office? Candidates should all answer a 3 or 4 page survey before being on the ballot and those results should be made publicly available.

Speaking on technical books I could not agree more. I own shelves of books and even though many of them are new the information in them is stale and dated, often even the opinions. I have at least 3 books on my shelf that say RDRAM is the future. Even many of my modern networking books cover classful subletting (network+ anyone) rather than CIDR without distinguishing the difference between the 2. Many of them are poorly done and contain information that is just wrong. Oreilly books tend to be pretty good though. Another problem I have with books is that you can't search them, I might only need about 5% or 10% of the information in any given book I own but looking for it is often time consuming. My other problem with books is that I like information that is to the point, I could take almost any 400 page book I have and say the same thing in about 20 pages just as clear. I have little use for the additional 380 pages of opinion and poor examples.

The only solution to this is to GPL it and let people build packages for me, this prohibits closed source software.

That is because Japan understands that there are better things to spend money on than policing a world that does not want to be policed. Our current dilemma with the Shiite Muslims in Iraq is a textbook example of why so many people hate this country. We should be trying to place the Shiite's in control of Iraq, but instead we shut down their newspaper for speaking out and issue an arrest warrant for the most important Shiite in Iraq. The Sadam opposed the Shiite and killed al-Sadr's father. You would think if we can't stay out of peoples business that at least we would be little better at diplomacy. Who needs a virus when they have an anti-virus utility that causes more load and overhead than everything else combined. Not to mention their scare tactics to get people to spend more money. I think AVG and AVPE are fine solutions, just most people don't know they exist.

I recently priced out a system to power a 4 bedroom house. I think I figured out it would cost $20,000 (US) just to power the house durring daylight hours (and offload to grid). At night hours I would have to pull from the grid. I think it is actually a law that the electric company has to buy back extra electricity. The only hard part is that you have to send a pure sine wave, and if the electric company is repairing something with the grid down they have to be aware that you are offloading so you don't zap them (this is called Islanding).

If I wanted to put the systems on batteries I would have to spend much much more. I don't want ot use half my garage for a pile of car batteries. Anyway, it would take around 30 years to pay off a solar powered system here (north US). I looked at hydro power (as I aslo have a large creek on my property), but few people seem to be selling hydro systems and I would need special permission.
