The first is the DVD count are intentionally produced at a higher rate than necessary proportional to the number of videos involved (ie, putting only 3 episodes on a DVD instead of 4). This is done intentionally to inflat e the price, as consumers like you view more about the number of DVDs involved than the content of said DVDs.
More often than not, anime dvds come these days with 4-5 episodes per disc for 26 episode series. If they come with fewer episodes per disc (and thus, more discs), it is not because they're artificially inflating the price, it's because they have to make back the money they spent on the license.
And some licenses, like Media Blasters licensing Berserk for half a million dollars, or Manga paying about a million for the eva movies, cost a whole fucking lot.
Then they must also obey whatever release restrictions the licensor may demand of them.
In fact due to all the differences between all the denominations in Japanese money, ATMs are far more versatile as well.
At the ATMs in my bank, I was close to shocked that I was able to just throw in a bunch of bills and (*gasp*) CHANGE and the machine automatically tallied it all up for me.
The only issue I can see that they've had is that recently the 500yen coin underwent a fairly hefty remake and many vending machines and some older subway/train ticket machines won't accept both, either one or the other. I've only encountered one of the older 500yen coins in the month and a half I've been here, so they're probably actively filtering them out of circulation.
Microsoft getting them will just kill the fun for everyone else, as you'd never see a Sega game for anything but XBox.
And we all love the XBox, now don't we?
EA isn't much of a choice either, their focus seems to be too much on the sports games, and I fear Sega's other divisions would be pared down in favor of the soccer/baseball/etc. divisions.

The first obstacle to overcome is the bad attitude many linux users have that if something is easy to install, or easy to use, it is therefore bad.
As I see it, many would like to keep the learning curve very, very steep and high to maintain their exclusivity and "leetness" if you will.
For instance, the post above mine displays the ignorant attitude that "easy to install" by definition equals "unstable software" and has only a jab at MS to cite as a reference.
That's truly sad (though that may just be a symptom of being a slashdot reader.)
As I see it, not everyone finds:./configure make make install
to be intuitive, much less easy, never mind what happens if you get compiler errors, or your build environment isn't the one the package wants *cough*mplayer*cough*, or if you even have said development environment.
Nor does it mean the software is any more stable. Could be just as shitty. _That_ is a matter of the developer of the program, not the install process.
Don't forget that $10 price is because of a few things: - Licensing - Translation - Editing (to replace the Japanese with English) and is primarily the result of a far smaller marketplace. The volume of manga produced and sold in Japan alone is many, many times larger than the entire comic market in the US.
Sometime while I'm in Japan for the next year I'm going to buy an SL-C700.
All the features of the SL-5600 with a nice big screen and full keyboard.
I know Dynamism wants $700 for theirs, but if you can get it for less, there are guides online that have reverse engineered their localization process. I don't know what their markup is but I've seen it put at around $200 (!!)
I'd rather have Lord Illpalazzo as president than Dubya!
Even thougn nothing would be accomplished, I could be a member of Across (though I couldn't talk about it), and I would be conscripted to helping further LORD ILPALAZZO'S goal of conquering the world!
As incompetent as Ilpalazzo is, man, at least he doesn't hesitate to get all petty and spiteful when VISUAL KEI rockstars come in and cause his subordinates to have dirty YAOI dreams about him and the rockstar!
Bush would just grin, and look like a monkey. Which would take NO EFFORT! Especially not for him!
Too much stuff at conventions tends to be bootleg copies made in Hong Kong with no contribution to the creators.
Same with ebay. The majority there is the same HK bootlegs you find too often at anime cons.
And what rediculous prices? I can find most stuff LEGIT for under $20/disc. Less for older series even.
And don't forget that most of the US anime companes have exactly NOTHING to do with the RIAA and MPAA, therefore they have nothing to do with their political actions.
Here in central Arkansas, the municipal waste treatment facilities (at least one site) use the gathered methane to power the entire plant, and also supply power to the local grid.
Cuts costs a bit but doesn't generate a profit (good thing too, or it'd vanish into the city bueracracy thanks to some weird rules!)

Nope, confirmed with about 2 other people...
Free subscriptions for all?
They could have chosen something better to replace "ga" than "bi."
It feels like I'm mumbling when I say "Gibibytes," "Mebibytes," and "kibibytes."
taco, why does slashdot strip encoded, non-english text out of posts?
Are you racist or something?
It's times like these that I'm really bored.
Why buy an extraneous hardware device to do what my computer can do in a few pixels of screen space?
If this were mobile, MAYBE it'd be worthwhile but my phone already has this covered (e-mail, c-mail).
Right.
And IRC would have died where it stood, full of elitist assholes and those with hacked clients lying about their OS.
Borland Delphi
Sure it's not BASIC, but then that's not exactly a bad thing.
Compiles down to a standalone executeable.

My friend desperately wanted Shenmue II but waited to get a japanese dreamcast and the Japanese release to avoid having to do so.
Apparently Yu Suzuki was disappointed by the XBox release's performance of Shenmue II, and the next release will be on a more prevalent platform.
Preferrably Namco would be the one to get Sega.

Just gotta wait and see.
*cough*

It's never a free lunch.
It's at the potential expense of a US market for some shows.
Of course the only ones who can prosecute until something is licensed is the Japanese company, but they don't seem to be in too much of a hurry.
I do hold much spite for those who distribute stuff after its licensed, since they obviously have no right to.

Let me first mention that it seems obvious that speaking against the RIAA and MPAA, even in a wholly UNRELATED CONTEXT seems to get one modded up.
Additionally, anime is a LUXURY. You don't kinda have to download it.
If it costs too much, don't fucking whine. You don't need nor deserve it.
Well they did show the first two episodes.
They were so heavily edited though, there'd be no way in hell they could show ANY of the later episodes without destroying the show.
HA!

Too bad Lime-Iro Senkitan and Kiddy Grade don't have a chance in hell of being shown on CN.
Kiddy Grade has too many panty shots, and the sex in Lime-Iro Senkitan is a taboo subject here in the US...
Sad really, I like 'em both!
Except it's not the steam ships people want.
They want your sails, but they want them for free.
And a thousand other holes in the analogy abound...

You can tolerate using mplayer for dvds? A brave man you are. And tolerant.
And what were you referring to about an american dvd? The coming one (that'll be released N months from now)?
It does bother me that you say "until this movie is released and can be ripped."
You do realize that the only way to compensate them for their work is to buy it, right?
