  1. Ballmer probably knows what's said here on Ballmer Scorns Apple As a $500 Logo · · Score: 1

Yes we all agree, Ballmer said something stupid. And we then think "he is stupid".
    Maybe not.
What's the goal of this Ballmer speech? Obviously, it's been said here, that's not to get Apple fans back to ms-windows.
I think the goal is to keep on ms-windows those who have no clue at what really is Mac OS X. microsoft users hear 2 things:
    1. Apple is growing, nice, hype, etc. but costs more, hence it must be better than windows!
    2. now they have the REAL reason from Ballmer: that's just to get a nice logo. Great, they can stick to windows and stop worrying about that.

The audience target is not Apple fans, but microsoft users. Ballmer knows he is wrong. But the goal is to fool and keep ms-windows users.

If you can not install any software, i.e. run any setup.exe, can't you run Portable Applications ? You just have to copy the folder, and run the software from there. You can even keep it on a USB stick, where it will save prefs, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_soft ware

  3. French paradox on Drinking Alcohol May Extend Your Life · · Score: 1

On this subject, you may want to read this Wikipedia article :
      - French Paradox : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_paradox
    Here are 2 extracts :
    1. Introduction : "The French paradox refers to the fact that people in France suffer relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease, despite their diet being rich in saturated fats. The phenomenon was first noted by Irish physician Samuel Black in 1819."
    2. Part of the chapter on Wine : "It has been suggested that France's high red wine consumption is a primary factor in the trend. This theory was expounded in a 60 Minutes broadcast in 1991. The program catalysed a large increase in North American demand for red wines from around the world. It is believed that one of the active ingredients potentially related to this effect in red wine is resveratrol.
Resveratrol and other grape compounds have been positively linked to fighting cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease, and other ailments. Red wine typically has health benefits not found in white wine (with some exceptions) because many of these compounds are found in the skins of the grapes and only red wine is fermented with the skins.
The first scientific study of the relationship between alcohol consumption and atherosclerosis was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1904. The first epidemiological study to report that moderate drinkers exhibit greater longevity than abstainers or heavy drinkers was published in 1926 by Raymond Pearl. Hundreds of studies have followed in recent decades."

More on Wikipedia., as usual :-)

  5. France DSL is pretty good, too on Internet Connectivity Outside of the United States · · Score: 4, Informative

Nothing about France's DSL in TFA.
That's strange, because France has one of the best European DSL, if not the best.
For 30 euros per month, you get the maximum of what your line can technically support (up to 24Mbits if you are near the ISP equipment), with lots of services included.
That's with the Freebox, a DSL modem made by Proxad, based on Linux. Among the free services, you have:
        - unlimited net access (no quota)
        - unlimited phone calls to land lines in France, and many lines in countries (it costs zero to call a mobile phone in USA for example)
        - tv access if you are in a "degrouped" area (sorry I don't have the english term)
That's what we call "triple play offer". And they are now migrating to "quadriple pay offers", the new boxes are wifi, and a wifi-gsm phone can be bought.

Pretty cool, no ? I wonder why this is not in the article.

This case is different, because the DVD was not correctly labelled. There was a small CP (for "Copie Prohibee", which means "copy unauthorized"), which has been decided by the court to be not enough to inform the customer about the protection.

The fact that Windows is everywhere is why it's such a tempting target; a hit rate of 1% on virus infection of Windows PCs is a good number, so it's worth going after. If linux had a good market share, it would be running the spam zombies.

No. This is not true, and a counter-example is enough to invalidate this very common theory. Actually, I have 2 here, but other /. readers may have more :
    1. Web servers : Apache has twice the market share of microsoft IIS. but is far less taken as target.
    2. Databases : microsoft SQL server has only around 16% of market share, less than Oracle, db2 and probably MySQL, but it is the most common target.

Targets are first chosen regarding the facility to compromise them. Popularity will come as a second point to consider. Of course this is true when the potentitial of targets is high enough, which is the case in my examples.
