When did Microsoft realize a novel idea at all? I have huge problems thinking of one single thing Microsoft has invented by themselves.
Nobody cares what the research people do as long as its all a show and a way to patent things to keep the competition from using it. They deserve every bit of contempt they get.
Powershell is just like bash. Im not impressed at all. Tell me something you can do in powershell that you cant in bash and ill tell you how many third party Windows applications that support powershell.
Because copying is the sincerest form of flattery Microsoft decided to do it slightly different and pretend that the idea did not in any form or shape come from the unix shell.
Vista secure? Thats something time will tell but i have really strong doubts about that considering vital parts of the OS like tcp/ip are rewritten and needs a couple of servicepacks of bug fixes. Magic eight ball tells you to expect a truckload of security issues in the new untested code.
"Hopefully they will repeat that success story now."
Like taking over the market and then grind the development to a schreeching halt?
Microsoft won the browser war, dismantled their Internet Explorer team and just didnt give a crap about it for years. Is that really what you want to happen to Windows security?
The problem if Microsoft provides antivirus is that it makes it possible for them to be less vigalant at fixing holes in the OS (if thats even possible). Antivirus does absolutely nothing to stop someone from owning your computer. All it does is shield you from large automated attacks with only one thing in mind, making your box a spam-drone. Im not at all afraid to be a spamdrone, im afraid that critical business information should get into the hands of the wrong people. Antivirus does absolutely nothing to shield you from that. All the hacker need to do is to alter some small pieces and no antivirus will reqognize it. Since the underlying flaw is still there in the OS its a preverbial highway straight into your network. Just get some sucker inside the company to open the mail and your home.
Microsoft bundling their own antivirus/antispyware is not fixing any mistake. The error lies in the security errors made by Microsoft and can only be fixed by eradicating those said errors. Antivirus does not in any way highten security in windows. All it does is mitigate the more commonly used viruses that has already struck enough people. Anybody making a directed attack against someone just flies through any antivirus. As long as the vulnerability used by the virus is still in there the problem exists and is a serious security threat.
Antivirus should not be part of the OS in any way or form. The reason the antivirus inustry exists is that its pretty hard for Symantec, Mcaffe etc to patch holes/correct bad design choices in Windows. They have to sell antivirus to mitigate errors but im damn shure that if they could they would rather fix the holes used by the viruses.
There is a reason that nobody in the linux camp is that thrilled about implementing anvtivirus functions. Its the wrong way to solve the problem of bad code, bad choices and contempt of security.
I would have no problem if Symantec and the whole security industry vanished because microsoft suddenly made better products. The problem is they just skip the "more secure products" part and just swallows a band aid solution that dont really fix any of the inherent security problems in Windows.
Microsoft dont support much in hardware. Its the hardware manufacturers themselves that does that. The drivers that comes with Windwos is made 99% by the hardware industry themselves. Microsofts costs lie in their marketing department. Gotta have that excellent sales staff to sell canned poo!
Apple can just do as Microsoft does, rake in large sums of money to let the hardware manufacturers confirm to a MAC OS X ready logo and standard.
PS. Microsoft has Q&A? WTF, have you ever used any of their products? DS.
Good security stems from design choices made before writing the first line of code. Things like usability, cool functions and new gadgetry have to be weighted against security. If more functionality is your prime directive you wont have good security. Only when security comes first every single time will your application be able to withstand threats from the internet.
If the normal workflow in IE7 is having to click a lot of yes/allow/ok popups thats what people will do. Thats not better security, its just a way of handing over the responsibility of the security to the users. For an OS targeted at baffoons thats not really a bright idea. Thanks to this Microsoft will just blame any security problem as a user error not having done anything to fix the bad security in IE.
If the EU gets the same access to US databases im a ok with this. Somehow i suspect the US would never bend over and take it like that. Only the EU is so cowardly bent over for their new puppet lors.
If you look at their blogsite you will find Microsoft mentioned in there.
http://www.sixapart.com/ gives this on netcraft wich i find perticularly interesting....:
"a.microsoft.com Microsoft Corporation, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, 98052, United States January 2005 AkamaiGHost"...etc, the list goes on and it looks like an effort to hide something.
Are they affiliated with Microsoft in any way as this suggests its much worse than some stupid prank.
First Microsoft included their browser, then their own bastardized version of java. In come the media player. Microsoft is now going to include antivirus in their product amongst other things. The next logical step is including Microsoft Office with the OS. After that tax applications etc etc until Windows is both the OS and the applications.
Its impossible to break a monopoly that works like Microsoft does with regular market forces.
While some may think its all ok to include antivirus in Windows i say its insane. The problem in the underlying OS should be fixed by better security, not by chomping up a third party market that became because of apparent lack of security in the OS.
Firefox lives out in the open, has been extensively audited by a huge number of different people, not to mention the bunch of automated bug hunt tools makers who have combed the code. Internet Explorer on the other hand is patched with hidden patches all lumped together. Ever wondered why there always seems to be more holes found by virii makers than is reported after patch tuesday? Not to mention all those unpatched holes thats dragged on for as long as possible, only to be fixed in the next version?
All MS patching is about is limiting the statistical amount of patches. Security is on the bottom on the priority list.
But then again, people do seem to be stupid enough to go for these publicity stunts so maybe its time for Mozilla to start cooking the books?
If IBM is smart they will target LSB (Linux Standard Base). Then they will ask the distributions to please conform to that standard. If anything this is the kind of thing that could work on unify Linux even better if done right. Ofcourse testing will have to be done anyway but the likelyhood of problems will be very small for every new distribution supported.
"I challenge everyone to take 80% of the time they spend complaining about Microsoft and devote it to something else such as contributing to an OSS project."
Likewise, i would prefer if Microsoft would spend a tiny percent on the energy spent badmouthing its competition and spend it on fixing their utterly broken products. MS deserves every bit of bitching they get.
You confuse the typical PC-gamer with the typical console gamer. Sure, if youre a first person shooter only X-box will fit you well. But on the other hand if you want something new WII is the first real new thing in gaming since Castle Wolfenstein came out.
I would most certainly call myself a dedicated gamer, just not an FPS gamer anymore. Been there, done that and its getting really booring.
Wii brings something new and fresh that neither PS3 nor Xbox 360 does. While they try to make a booring PC out of a gaming console Nintento focus on making gaming fun. Ill rather have fun while playing games.
The Pirate Party didnt get one second of media coverage in any tv or radio channel. They drowned literaly in the media. Also the other parties lied and said they would work against the laws making filesharing illegal. Yea...riiiight.
Most people i know just pirate XP anyway since they only get XP Home with their computer and wants PRO. If Vista sucks as bad as it seems to do considering current RC1 its a new Windows Millenium. Ff nothing short of amiracle happens many people will even buy a computer with Vista and downgrade to XP to get more speed out of their computers. The wasted cpucycles just isnt worth the naked emperors new fancy clown suit.
I dont think the party was involved in this stunt. I see it as an insidejob made by a disillusioned former Social Democrat. If he was just plain stupid or if there was something more sinister behind is hard to know.
Dont forget that the kid doing the breakins is a former Social Democrat.
Many of us swedes thinks this was a planned event where the login was "leaked" to the opposition by purpouse. The swedish social democrats would probably stop at nothing to keep in power. The person who did the breakin (Per Jodenius) was a former Social Democrat. This person is from the same town (Växjö) and local Social Democrat Youth member in the same circuit as the journalist ( Fredrik Sjöshult )who blowed the whistle. The fact that this happened just hours after the leading party (from the polls) had his turn in the national TV is to much for it to be a coincidense.
Ugly indee and not very democratic.
Its like, if you hassled a country for not being democratic and then imposed sanctions on them for choosing the wrong people in the votings....oh, wait..
For an outsider the US looks a lot like the USSR did ten years ago. The KGB is even surpassed in US govts intrusion into the privacy of peoples lives. Its pretty funny how the US have become exactly what it hated the most about Soviet Its likely to continue into something much worse if people living in the US keep taking it happily in the rear. Perhaps they will wake up when the economy meets reality and the huge defecits starts to take its toll.

Can your grandmother rid the computer of virii and worms? Fix it when its utterly broken? If not who fixes her computer when it breaks?
I have yet to see a working solution with sandboxing that leaves a small amount of cpu power left for other things than checking for viruses.

Winning an online game by cheating is just like winning the special olympics. You win, but youre still retarded.

Lets hope it will stop at the next election.
The differences between distros is mostly superficial. If you master one you master them all. The knowledge in Linux is highly reusable.
I sure hope they try them all and uses what fits them the best.
