  1. FSF and their ilk have never cared about gamers on Should Linux Use Proprietary Drivers? · · Score: 1
    There. I said it.

The hard fact is that commercial gaming has never had a place anywhere in the world of free software. It just doesn't 'fit'. None of the things that make creating free software profitable apply well to video games.

So what's the free software solution for gamers? Well ... if your dream was to play every 1980's arcade game, only as a penguin, then I have great news for you.

Otherwise, there's no reason for a serious gamer to run anything other than Windows on their gaming machine. Linux and everything GNU are a dead end for gamers. Macs are not a whole lot better.

It's similar to when liberals decided they needed a talk radio station to counteract "hugely popular" conservative talk radio.

The reason conservative talk radio was so popular was that there weren't many other news outlets that didn't kowtow to liberals, let alone cater to conservatives. "Air America", last I heard, was struggling.

Similarly, you have to ask yourself ... why was a christian movie like The Passion of the Christ so popular? And why are there christian rock bands? Why is there christian fiction?

It isn't because christians, in general, feel like they need their own specialized forms of entertainment. It's because common elements of popular movies, rock, and fiction are antithetical to christian beliefs, if not downright disrespectful.

Games, however, don't really have the same problem. The developers of WoW might feel that christianity, christians, and christian values suck, but I have no idea one way or the other. It never comes up. Why play a christian version of WoW when the original rocks and it doesn't insult me?

And if something with great gameplay does happen to be pretty raw (GTA), there will be poor-quality tame imitations anyway.

One would think that the very thought of the government keeping tabs on what it's citizens are READING at a PUBLIC LIBRARY is enough to make the bile rise in your stomach.

It is, to about everyone, including most supporters of the PATRIOT act. Myself, for example.

However, there's a big difference between tracking what ordinary citizens are reading and being able to easily subpoena the library records of a suspected terrorist.

Keep in mind, too, that library records were not out-of-bounds in criminal investigations prior to PATRIOT ... it's just that they are now easier to obtain.

  12. corporate 'greed' on Motivations for Corporate Blogging · · Score: 5, Informative
Corporate officers try to make profits for their companies because that's what corporate officers are supposed to do. Shareholders (usually including employees) have invested large sums of money into the company, in return for which they expect profits.

Interestingly, a brit pop star recently said that the real evil is 'shareholders'. That would be great, except that in non-socialist countries there's no good way to retire without being a shareholder at some point or another.
